Book Club #20: The Great Gatsby

Hey guys, how's it going? As you know, I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog, where I post reviews about most of the books I read. I try to keep finding cool titles to showcase here and, between classics and new stories, I think we've been doing a good job. I read a lot and it's important for me that you guys know that. Who knows? Maybe it will inspire you to read a bit more... Today's book is a super classic and perfectly fit for this month's theme: GLORY; I have to admit that I saw the movie first but the book is incredible. Debauchery, love and betrayal take shape in a glorious era. Book Club #20 is The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

El libro de hoy es un súper clásico y encaja perfectamente con el tema mensual: GLORIA; tengo que admitir que vi la película primero pero el libro es increíble. Indulgencia, amor y traición toman forma en una era gloriosa. El Book Club #20 es The Great Gatsby, de F. Scott Fitzgerald.

"I like large parties. They're so intimate... At small parties there isn't any privacy." The 20's were the setting of The Great Gatsby; a tragic love story about a man who falls in love with the wrong woman told by a mutual acquaintance who serves as witness of marvellous events unfolding in front of him. I suppose some things never change; it's easy to lose yourself in a sea of splendour, of glory. That's the beauty within decadence. It has to be a big fall from grace (but the starting point is grace, nonetheless).

I really like the quote I began this post with; it's such a great way to describe the whole atmosphere of this novel. I don't know if this has happened to you but when you're in a big group of people, the person you choose to interact with has a more intimate connection with you than the others. In small gatherings, everyone knows everyone and there aren't private moments. I also think it's a way of saying that you can be whoever you want in front of a crowd but only the inner circle will know exactly who you are.

This story develops during the prohibition of alcohol era in the US, I believe people were a bit wilder then and the characters are over the top, everything is exuberant and luxurious about The Great Gatsby. Love is strong but so is anger and jealousy. A classic story of star-crossed lovers who fell out of touch becomes something magnificent with great parties and ostentatious shows of affection. It's something that belongs to this era and that cannot be replicated. That's the magic in Fitzgerald's words; there's a great feeling of glory and the loss of it, a road that's never easy to navigate...

Los 20s fueron el escenario de The Great Gatsby; una historia de amor trágica sobre un hombre que se enamora de la mujer equivocada, todo contado desde la perspectiva de una persona que tienen en común, quien sirve como testigo de eventos maravillosos desenvolviéndose frente a él. Supongo que hay cosas que nunca cambian; es fácil perderse en un mar de esplendor, de gloria. Ahí está la belleza de la decadencia. Tiene que ser una gran caída de la gracia (pero el punto de partida es, siempre, gracia).

Me gusta mucho la frase con la que inicié este post; es una gran manera de describir la atmósfera de esta novela. No sé si esto les ha pasado pero cuando estás en un grupo grande de personas, la persona que eliges para interactuar tienen una conexión más íntima contigo que los demás. En pequeñas reuniones, todo mundo conoce a todos y no hay momentos privados. También creo que es una forma de decir que puedes ser quien quieras frente a una multitud pero sólo tu círculo privado sabrá exactamente quién eres.

Esta historia se desarrolla en la época de prohibición de alcohol en Estados Unidos, creo que la gente era un poco más salvaje en ese entonces y los personajes son exagerados, todo es exuberante y lujos en The Great Gatsby. El amor es fuerte pero también la ira y los celos. Una historia clásica de amores que se perdieron en el camino se convierte en algo magnífico con grandes fiestas y ostentosas formas de mostrar afecto. Es algo que pertenece a esta época y no puede ser replicado. Ahí yace la magia en las palabras de Fitzgerald; hay un gran sentido de gloria y la pérdida de ésta, un camino que nunca es fácil de navegar.
