YouTube Monthly Recap: June

What's up guys?! It's official, we're on the second half of 2017 and June's behind us. This year's going by so fast, I wish it would all slow down ): But since that's not happening anytime soon, we can only embrace what's happening and move forward. June was about trying new things for YouTube, making improvements and learning to work with a revamped team at the studio.

During the course of this month, I did a a new instalment on my outfit inspiration series with trends for 2017's spring and summer; shot a K-Pop inspired hair tutorial; did an honest and not sponsored review of Light In The Box, one of those Asian clothing stores and; gave some tips on how to travel more pleasantly. It's time to recap those videos and put them all together below for you to catch up or watch them again. Enjoy!

Love always,
Henry.

Instincts are a powerful thing. Some people follow them, some choose to ignore them and, others can't bring themselves to make them real, mostly because of insecurities and lack of self-confidence, of self-love. They come in big and small doses, waves, it doesn't matter if you get a hunch about getting off a bus or about making a big trip, the way instincts work finds a way of making you feel something at certain moments.

It flows like jam, dripping slowly from a knife. A hunch is the first step towards an action and from there, it's up to the brain to manoeuvre and go through with a plan. You may wonder, why am I talking about this? I'm in Sacramento at the moment and, the other day, I took a day trip to Lake Tahoe; when your trips only last a couple hours you have to be smart to make the most of it, you have to follow your instincts and pick the best things to do.

I checked out awesome places to visit on Trip Advisor and double checked them on Instagram; that's how I found Key's Cafe, a super cool restaurant, created and run by locals. Everything about it was amazing, from the food to the location, from their inside decor to their outside area. I knew right away that it would be a great spot for photos and a good place for lunch. I followed my hunch, I followed my instinct and believed in my ability to make the most out of a trip. That, my friends, is one of the traits I love most about myself.

Nature's Call

Life Journal 58 Humans come from nature. They exist thanks to years and years of the Earth's development; they can't live without water, without oxygen, without food... Nature provides for most of those things and it's thanks to natural resources that modern technology and advancements have taken place. Living in a big city can make a person take nature for granted: small parks, flowers and trees on the streets, what more is needed?

It's hard to describe what going back in touch with nature and its grandness feels like, everyone experiences it differently. However, one thing stands true in front of everything else: nature refuels the soul, it brings back basic instincts and feelings, it heals the mind and body. Call it a forest in Canada, Yosemite Falls, feeding a dear in Nara, it doesn't matter, when the body asks to return to its roots, that's a call that mustn't be ignored.

Love always,
Henry.

I've visited my mom four times since she moved to Sacramento, this is the first one that I'm doing it alone (that means without my sister) and; it's also the first time that we can do what I want, instead of what she wants. Don't get me wrong, I love my sister and all but she can be really annoying when she doesn't get the things she desires. So, since I'm front and center for this trip, I wanted to do something for myself, for my soul, I wanted to visit Yosemite Park.

I've seen the most incredible photos of the waterfalls and I wanted to see them live, through my lens, through my eyes. I planned the day trip, prepped three outfits and even chose a pretty small town on the way back to taste some home-made local cuisine. Things didn't go the way I wanted. I didn't know this but the traffic jams inside the park are insane and you waste so much time in that, the park itself is hard to navigate and I was never able to find the lakes and waterfalls I wanted to see. It started raining and I was only able to shoot two outfits... Agh, so many things went wrong...

But, you know? I'm choosing to focus on the positive aspects of this trip: I connected with nature at a time where it was much needed; I shot two outfits; I didn't die when I almost fell off a cliff and neither did my camera when the same thing happened to it! Plus, the food at the small town (Groveland) we visited was great and I think, even when plans aren't fulfilled, experiences still enrich you. It's all about learning to love and stand by your choices and accept what life throws in the way.

Hidden Corners: Chetito

hidden corners Chetito review resena
hidden corners Chetito review resena 2
Taco places are one of the most common kind of restaurants in Mexico City, they're everywhere. Some of them offer the basic stuff: tacos al pastor or beef/chicken tacos but; more and more often, new places pop up and bring new things to the table (literally). That's the case with Chetito, a small and cozy restaurant without professional chefs but with tons of heart; they offer new and refreshing combinations, a good change from your same old taco.

I went there to do a review and had a really pleasant surprise. The first thing I ordered was a mix of french fries, beef, cheese and special bacon sauce, that was really great entree and enough for two or three people because, trust me, you want to save your appetite for what comes next. I was told by a good friend to choose opposite meat tacos, so I went for fish and beef instead of beef and beef or beef or chicken. The first taco I had had tuna, spicy oily sauce and avocado (I've never had a tuna taco before and I really liked the idea but I wasn't the biggest fan of the sauce, it was a bit bitter for my taste); the second taco I had was beef, mashed potatoes and the same bacon sauce as the fries, that was really good.

Every time I do a review, I always save space for dessert and here I chose a Nutella/Ferrero empanada and chai tea (when no good teas are available, always choose chai, it's safe but delicious).  This was my favourite part of the meal, haha, I find it funny because it wasn't a taco but I would definitely go back to Chetito only for an empanada. Overall, it's a great spot to chill with friends and fill your belly for way less than 10 bucks. If you're looking for specialty tacos with a lot of heart, Chetito is the place for you (just remember to get an empanada as well).

Eclipse 3
An eclipse can be defined as an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and an observer or between that body and its source of illumination. Eclipses one of those things that can become an amazing metaphor; think about it: it's a moment where light and darkness meet and one partially covers the other, both become one and, although they're not joint, the observers perceive them as one body.

Life is a lot like that too; I've seen so many TV shows and movies dealing with the idea that we have some darkness inside of us that obscures our inner light, something that affects our minds and personalities and make us go into strange places, dangerous areas. On a recent post I was discussing how you can feel both happy and sad at the same time and still be okay, still love yourself. I think the same thing happens with our lighter/darker sides, it's important to embrace the best and the worst and learn to be okay with that.

In the past, I was a mean kid, I enjoyed having power over people and, looking back, I didn't like myself very much. I'm a lot different now, being nice is one of my main approaches towards life but still, from time to time, the darkness emanates from its deep sleep and I go a little crazy. I've been learning to control that by being nicer but I've also noticed how people mistrusts nice people nowadays, they don't believe it's genuine. I guess the best way to face the eclipse is with honesty, being true about who you are and loving the good and the bad, the darkness and the light.

Is Travelling Really a Good Investment?

Wisdom #34 Is Travelling really a good insvestment feat American Tourister
I think we've all heard it before: travelling is the best thing ever, it's the greatest investment in yourself... But is it? I think yes isn't always the answer. Travelling comes with amazing experiences, knowledge and personal growth but it also takes a toll on you. It can cause anxiety, depression and a sense of belonging nowhere, at least that's what has happened to me in the past. So, let me tell you this: smart travelling is a really good investment, but not all the trips you make in life fall in that category.

Save up and travel by yourself, go some place exotic. Take a trip to a place that enriches and nourishes your soul and brain. Stop taking all the small chances available to leave your city and focus on the good opportunities, maybe those trips that require going a bit further away. Those are the trips that will make you grow, that will give you courage to go back home and face the world with a smarter, better strategy. Invest in good travelling and stop doing silly trips that get forgotten easily.

Ahorra y viaja solo, ve a algún lugar exótico.
Love always,
Henry.

Happy and Sad 4
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favourite books because it's one of those stories that really resonated with me (and it still does); at one point Charlie (the main character) says that he feels both happy and sad and he's still trying to figure out how that's possible but, also, that feeling like that is sort of okay. I've been thinking about that a lot these past two weeks.

Today, in particular, getting up and out of bed was pretty hard and it's not the first time that this happens to me recently. A few days ago, I googled the reasons why it's hard for people to get out of bed and the answer that made the most sense to me was that "it's because a lack of motivation"; I'm not saying I'm depressed or anything like that but I definitely feel like I'm lacking motivation to do things and that stresses me out because I hate feeling unproductive.

The general solution for that, according to the internet of course, is that you should find something that motivates you. WOW, no kidding, that's obvious; the challenge here is finding what that thing is. I've been thinking a lot and, somehow, life has been both happy and sad and that's how I feel. The happy part comes when I find motivation but the sad part remains strong most of the time. I'll be travelling soon and I really hope that helps me out and clears my mind. I'm sorry if this post was weird but it was something I needed to write...

The best Korean online store?

Wisdom #33 BB Cosmetic Best Korean online Store
When I lived in Seoul, I wasn't really into beauty and skincare products and that's a shame because Korean products are on another level, they're really really cool and, surprisingly, not expensive. Koreans know what they're doing and they know what looking better is a competitive advantage, and one that shouldn't be inaccesible. A few years later, I found myself loving Korean products and trying to locate a really cool store that had free international shipping: I FOUND IT.

Here's when BBCosmetic.com becomes relevant. I found stores with free US shipping before (like MemeBox) but that meant I had to go visit my mom in the US to get stuff and since I don't do that all the time, I searched for a store that had free international shipping and found BBCosmetic thanks to a YouTube video. I immediately contacted them and they sponsored me with a few products.

I've tried most of these and they're awesome but the coolest thing is that now I can get all the Korean products I want without having to go to the US. I'm planning on buying quite a few things, haha. You should really check out their store, they give you free samples with each order and, if you need a bit more convincing, you can use my code "BBHENRYEVIA" to get a discount on any purchase, no matter how big or small. Give them a chance, give Korean products a chance, I swear you won't be disappointed.

Jealousy 6 Relationships are complex. I'm talking about every single kind of relationship there is out there, as soon as you put people together and make them interact, an infinite fan made of possibilities stretches out and the results are, quite often, unknown. I believe in friendship and defend that these are the most important relationships you'll ever have. And, sure, when we think of our friends, we usually picture happy moments; however, sometimes there's a feeling that lurks in the shadows, a threatening one: jealousy.

You might tell me: I've never been jealous of a friend, and that might or might not be true but I think we've all been a bit jealous of a friend, even just a little bit... Opportunities knock on doors and some people are luckier than others; for some, life is a bit easier and that's when the green eyed monster attacks. I've been jealous of some of my friends, I'll admit that... But I never act maliciously on that, and I think that's the key, it's okay to feel a bit insecure and to complain about life being unfair to you but always remember: a true friend feels happier when his friends are happy.

One way of confronting situations like these is to sit down and think about your life and the things you're grateful for. Think about the things you like about yourself and start loving them again. Be completely honest and appreciate the advantages and positive traits you have and others don't, that will help calm down your jealousy. Be nice, be grateful, share your victories with your friends and celebrate theirs. Don't be an outsider, embrace the energy around you.

June's about loving yourself

June Love Yourself Love is always complicated...

It doesn't matter how experienced you think you are in the area, love will always find a way to avoid simplicity and make you feel all tangled and twisted inside, it's just what it does. The other day I was thinking about how it's really important to give yourself some time to appreciate life and just enjoy the simplest of things, the things that make you happy and just then someone mentioned something that I haven't thought about in a long time.

A lot of people feel like when you're on a quest to loving yourself and the things you do, you become selfish; that, for some reason, putting yourself first and becoming your top priority is narcissistic and, therefore, wrong. I heavily disagree with that, I think that sort of thinking is dated and, quite frankly, stupid. Putting yourself first is necessary in order to advance in life and developing character. Loving yourself is the only way of healthily building up your self-esteem and that gives you the ability of loving others without baggage or ulterior motives.

I wanted June's theme to be about learning to love yourself a bit more, I'm not saying we're gonna get to the top of the mountain because, let's face it, we're all confident in some areas and really insecure about others, yet, if we can manage to love ourselves a little more, then we're on our way to something great. Expect the posts to revolve around that and all the different kinds of love out there. As usual, here's a great playlist that goes along with this letter, check it out by clicking here or by going directly to my YouTube channel.

Love is powerful, kids.

Love is powerful, kids.
