The Importance of Short-Term Goals

the importance of short term goals

In case I haven't said this a million times before: I have control issues, I like to plan things and checklists are tools that I live by... That has been a double edged sword in my life for years and years, especially during this pandemic era where we have zero control over everything that's going on in the world. Being unable to do the things I want to do, have less work and paid opportunities, attempting to exercise indoors and dealing with having my sister working from home hasn't been easy. During these tough days, I've realised that long-term goals are a bit, well, too long-term, so I've decided to focus on the immediate tasks at hand: the short-term goals.

You can start as big or as small as you'd like; say, a very small short-term goal could be trying a new recipe for breakfast tomorrow, a bigger one could be starting to upload Tiktoks on a daily basis. I'm still really worried about the future, it's not like I can turn off that part of my brain, but I've been trying hard to do small tasks every day. I've been baking more, getting better at cooking, doing a few workouts per week, watching tons of shows, playing games, it has helped to keep my mind a little more at ease instead of feeling super frustrated all the time. I make small checklists that are easier to accomplish (for instance: things to do this Sunday and stuff like that) and every little accomplishment feels good, especially if I compare it to an unreachable (at the moment) big goal for the future.

Love always,
Henry.

I'm wearing:
1. Love is Enough embroidered sweatshirt, H&M x Morris & Co.

3. Double creeper sole boots in white leather, Fenty x Puma.
4. "Love" choker in white, from YesStyle.
5. Sunglasses, from Mango.

I don't like the beach, I don't like heat or sweating or humidity or sand or all that comes with going to the beach. I'm super self conscious of my body so, I don't like swimming shorts and being shirtless in public. My family wanted to go on a beach day and it was one of those situations where you have no say except for "should we bring snacks?" and stuff like that... Luckily for me, it was really cold, like shivering cold, during that day therefore I was able to keep my sweatshirt on the whole time. I think it's important to say that this whole thing happened back in January, before quarantine and stuff like that, so we were not being irresponsible, okay?

Because it was waaaaay too cold, we were completely unprepared, haha; also, when we got to the beach it turned out to be a "no drinking" situation. We were thirsty, cold, pissed off and, I know I said this before but, unprepared, totally unprepared. We needed blankets, better food, a whole bunch of things that we didn't bring, haha. So, no swimming suits, no sunny moments, no tans (thankfully), only me, my sweatshirt, my choker, boots and glasses, haha. In a way, it was the perfect beach day for me because it didn't include all the things that I dislike BUUUUT I also (heavily) dislike going to places unprepared.

Anyhow, let's talk about the outfit here: I've discovered I love how burgundy looks on me, haha, and I need to get more garments in that color... I always go to the beach wearing jeans and some other pieces deemed not "proper beach attire", like boots or suede shoes, but I wanted to keep it cool and chic within my own sense of style and I think it works, it's a really cool look. I've been loving chokers lately and this one is really something! And, last year, I decided to take more risks with my accessories in general, so it works; the sunglasses are another risky choice but I kinda really like them, they're outside of my comfort zone. Take chances, have fun, you only live once and stuff (:

July: Finishing What You Started

July Finish What You Started Sometimes, a break is much needed...

I've realised that it's extremely hard for me to know exactly when I need to take a break from things. Maybe that's why I get sick due to stress and stuff like that, maybe that's why I feel overwhelmed most of the time. I didn't know I needed a break from blogging and editing photos and writing posts until I was deep in the final week of June and told myself: you need to get rid of some of this pressure you're putting on yourself, if you try to compensate and do a bunch of posts at once, you'll only get exhausted. It's okay to take a breather. And a breather I took, a much needed one because I'm recovering from a terribly stressful week.

Being on quarantine has affected us in very different ways but I can only speak for myself and say that it has really taken a toll on my mental health and I'm not sure I'm dealing with things in the best way possible. I exhaust myself some days and, on others I don't want to do anything and I feel like staying in bed all day... But then I feel guilty and exhaust myself all over again. That's not healthy. I'm a competitive guy, as I'm sure I've mentioned before, and at times the hardest competitor I face is myself. I don't let myself off the hook easily and I think I put so much unnecessary pressure on my shoulders because I'm messy and I can't seem to follow my own plans, that needs to change.

I'm also a resilient person. I don't take things for granted and I'm always fighting with myself, with the world, even with Internet algorithms, I don't quit easily and I hate giving up. "Finish what you started" is a saying that has remained close to my heart and one that I easily ignore as well. I start a million things (and sure, I eventually finish them all) but fail to follow through in a steady manner, I need to change that as well. Small or big goals, tough or easy challenges, I need to get my sh*t together and figure out a way to organise myself, to finish the things I start and, also, to relieve some of the weight I purposely carry on my shoulders.

Stay with me, let's figure things out.

LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS. I wrote that in all caps because I mean it, guys; life teaches us many lessons and that's an important one. I'm a perfectionist, a control-freak, I like to lead and, if you haven't guessed it by now, that has hurt me and teared me down many many times. When I go to family things or events held by my mom's friends, it's a funny thing, they always tell me I look like a model (I mean, of course I'm not a model but thanks) or a pop-star or even, (true story) the dolls from the wedding cake... And I think it's because of the way I dress and present myself. I'm not always glamorous or anything like that but I do put in a lot of effort.

So, imagine this scenario when we got to this party with 20-30 people and I'm wearing a freakin' glitter shirt and the host is in shorts and flip-flops (with very questionable hair), I felt so out of place and, I know it's a frivolous thing to say, at the same sort of superior to everyone else. That's the power your outfit and personal care can give you. Let me finish this statement saying that I was in no way superior to anyone and dressing better doesn't make you better than others but it sure as hell gives you a confidence boost. In the end, I got past my initial judgements by lowering my expectations and, turns out, everyone was super friendly and nice; that proves that even when you're in a farm (because I was), surrounded by people with a bad sense of style, you're not better than them, they all have their own value and when you change your focus from say, their outfits or their hair, you can actually see people for what they are.

With that said, let's talk about fashion here, okay? Because all that sentimentalism I said before is well and good but another very important thing to state is that if you look good, you feel good and; , also, every event is an excuse to dress up a bit. If you're nice, interesting, kind and well dressed, you're on your way to success. I paired my new favourite glitter shirt (from YesStyle) with black skinny jeans and black boots; the shirt is strong enough to make a statement, I feel like it looks best with a muted palette when it comes to the rest of the outfit, all black, all the time. Shine with your clothes and shine with your personality, you'll be unstoppable.

A playlist for staying in when what you really want is to go out

Playlist 7 indoors outside
This quarantine has been tough, hasn't it? That if we're fortunate enough to stay "safely" inside our homes. I've noticed that I've been singing a lot less (mostly because my sister's home) and not quite enjoying music as I normally do these past few weeks. So, when a friend of mine asked me to create a playlist for him, I thought: hey, why don't I share it here too? It's mostly for those days when you really want to go outside but, sadly, have to stay indoors. Hope you guys like it!

May: ReBuilt

May Rebuilt Stopping things and changing focus...

Somehow, being weirdly trapped at home has put a stop into my life plans, partly because I'm unable to do many things but also because it seems as if certain parts of the world and the things I see seem to have stopped or taken a pause. I believe there are two ways of looking at this: when things stop, you get sad, you get frustrated and, therefore, stop everything around you (I've been doing that and it's not getting me anywhere) AND, here's the money, the second approach, which consists on changing your focus onto the processes that are in motion and finding a way to keep moving.

The current global situation isn't nice, it's not pretty and, quite frankly, I hate everything about it. Things are more expensive, my work and partnerships with brands have been slowed down to amoeba speed, my sense of privacy has been deeply distorted and, last but never least, my emotional health has taken a toll. I thought that since people would be stuck at home, they'd be more appreciative of internet content (my content) but it's not the case, I'm still struggling, I'm still figuring things out and it's super frustrating.

Changing my focus and staying positive is so easy to say, so easy to think, but it's hard to put that in motion, to start something new. However, what else is there to do? If you fail, try and try again and, when your consequent attempts fail the target, try and try and try harder. I need that to be my motto, to keep myself motivated, to rebuilt and strengthen the parts of my that have been shattered in the past year or so. Let us try and try and try and try things, rebuild ourselves, it's the best we can do to survive.

Memories Through The Walls

Wisdom #80 Memories Through The Walls

I was just about to go to bed (at 5 am no less) when this particular thought came to me. In times like these, when we're advised (urged) to stay home, to be contained inside four walls, I've suddenly felt the need to think back, to reflect a little, to remember all the things these walls in my house have seen: things that happened, things that became memories, memories through the walls.

I thought about so many different scenarios: coming back from school to a home-cooked meal; having friends over; those strange moments when you'd have to stay home for some reason but still wondered what your family was doing; sleepovers; boring birthday parties and good ones too; being sick; staying home and watching cartoons; lunches; drunken moments; Christmas dinners; baking; watching movies with friends; watching shows with my Mom... It feels close but, at the same time, oh so far away.

Some days I feel trapped here because we're not supposed to go out, it's a quarantine after all; other days, I feel trapped inside my own head because I get bad and feel weird for no reason at all. That drains me, it makes me feel sad, tired, unmotivated... But, even if it's just for a little moment (at almost 6 am now), I feel nostalgically happy. These walls that are my confinement are also my home; those moments are my memories and no crisis or virus can ever take them away from me, they can't take away this feeling.

Love always,
Henry.

An Unequal Society vs the Coronavirus pandemic

an unequal society vs coronavirus pandemic
For the first time in-I don't know how many-centuries, we have the ability to save the world of a pandemic by staying home. Of course, those of us who are able to say home in these Coronavirus times should consider ourselves lucky (at least to some extent, I won't talk about how this is affecting my line of work here, I'll reserve that for a different post), but tons of people (especially marginalised parts of society) won't be able to stay home because they live on a day-by-day basis; some small businesses are on the verge of collapsing and, with no near end in sight, I feel like most of us will see a drastically different reality by the time it's considered prudent to leave our houses.

Our society works under the basis of capitalism, if we add the idea of a virus spreading, poor healthcare conditions and the already present inequality in it, the results are a little terrifying. Basically we'll be stuck with a system in which the richer will have access to the best medical resources and the working class and underprivileged fellows will suffer even more than they already do because, not only will they be sick, they'll also be unable to put food on the table. I've read somewhere that a situation like this serves as "an equalizer" because it affects every step of the hierarchy EQUALLY, without discriminating between rich and poor and it's true (in that little extent) but it's also false. The virus will not care about how much money you have in the bank but it definitely won't put everybody on the same boat. NOT A CHANCE.

The virus will impact heavily in politics, economics and healthcare, that's a given. In a country and society where class stratification plays a huge role in daily life, the consequences will worsen and the scariest part is that it's already happening: between people who don't really believe in the virus (upper and lower class tiers) and keep on going out, increasing the contagious rate; people who blame it all on the president (because we all need someone to blame, right?); casual racists and; unfair company owners... Things are looking pretty bleak at the moment.

If this virus acted like an equaliser, people wouldn't be forced to go to work, to crowd subway stations... We're about to see a harsher division between classes and if we stop fighting, it'll be impossible to change the current situation. So, next time you think about leaving your home for a non-life threatening situation, don't only think about sick people (although I'm sure irresponsible people don't event think about that), consider the impact you're generating in society and the contribution you're making to an awful new normality that will only divide classes even further.

Love always,
Henry.

Self Care: A practical non-clichéd guide

self care guide
Have you ever seen those posts on social media that say things like "to take better care of yourself, do the following: journal every day, meditate, take a deep breath..." and stuff like that? I'm sure you have... I don't think they're true, haha. I've yet to meet a person that's all zen like that and the few Internet girls I've seen talking about that seem fake AF, a very boring cliché. That said, I think self care is SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT OK? And just because I feel those things are clichéd and fake, doesn't mean that they're not true, they just don't work for me.

Let me tell you what it does (in a list because, well, organisation is important):

1. Read a good novel. Just because there are a million motivational books doesn't mean they're any great pieces of literature.

2. Binge-watch a good show. Animes and movies work fine as well. Just focus on their story for a while and, when you're done, think about the good things that you might add into your daily life. Hearing stories is good when you feel like yours is stuck.

3. Focus on yourself. Stop trying to save every single person out there because, spoiler alert, the only person you can save (most times) is yourself.

4. Pampering. Get that skincare routine in check, try on new outfits, do something different with your hair. Do it for yourself and not for others.

5. Internalise. Give yourself a good self-therapy session (yes, journal if you need to...). Think about the things you want to accomplish, make lists, set goals, download that cheesy organising app that you were curious about.

BONUS! Learn something new, anything, just learn something: a language, a recipe, try a new tea, figure out how to make yourself a drink, try a home workout routine. Seriously, just keep your mind busy.

Really hoping some of these tips help you out in times of need.
Remember: be your top priority, always.

Love,
Henry.

Love,
Henry.

April: Apocalypse Now

april apocalypse now
If you'd ask me how things were a month ago...

Well, my answer would be a completely different thing than it is now. Welcome to our own little apocalypse, best friends. It took a global pandemic virus to get us confined in the "safety" of our homes (some of us, at least). Back in March, all the talk about Coronavirus wasn't really a concern of mine, I was busier trying to understand how I can live in a country so violent, so misogynistic and old-fashioned as Mexico, and trying to figure out the best way of helping out others.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still very concerned about that situation but it seems like we're stuck in a weird place where most of the concern circles around public health, politics, a certain sense of collective fear of what may come and, of course, a general apathy towards the state of society as of late. I talk about this era, this new normal, as a version of the apocalypse because it's destroying many things that we've established (good and bad). These past few weeks, being aware and practicing social distance, trying to stay home as much as possible and, frankly, struggling to get much done have been difficult at times but, overall, strange for me. I wish I could do so much more to help, change the way things are, to keep the focus on so many other topics that I feel are relevant to us a society... Still, my mind keeps going back and forth without much of an answer.

Having a lifestyle blog doesn't seem as relevant to me as it felt, say, two months ago but; I have to keep focusing on doing what I do best: finding the balance between the things I want to talk about and the things that somehow work in the internet. The apocalypse is described (Bible references aside) as an event involving destruction or damage on a catastrophic scale: that's the moment we're living now and it's unknown if we'll ever go back to the things we once considered normal (I honestly don't think we are, but hey, let's keep the optimism going). So, throughout this month, I'll try to find things that are worth talking about mixed with our usual doses of fashion, music, anecdotes and wisdom. Let's get weird together.

Love always,

Bienvenidos a nuestro pequeño apocalipsis mejores amigos.

One of the greater things about living in this era is that we get a lot more freedom than our ancestors had; of course, we still face so many limitations because of our race, gender, nationality and so on but, hey, it's better than in the 1800s. Freedom, unfortunately, is a double-edged sword because (and here's where I tie in the empathy factor that I chose for March's theme) you can choose to support one cause but no the other. Everything comes down to your choices.

This month, I've been choosing to support the feminist movement a lot more, giving a little to a cause that it's important to me. Some will choose to support a different cause, or to not empathise at all, that's a personal stance and something that only through putting yourself in the other person's shoes will lead to knowledge and understanding. I'm not asking you to be something or to support the same things I do, all I want is for you to train your empathy, to care about others and not just yourself. A little bit goes a long way.

Moving onto today's outfit, I wanted to juxtapose two items that are not regularly seen together: a floral shirt and a turtleneck (mainly because I just got this shirt but it's a thin fabric and it was freaking cooooold outside). I'm fairly new to wearing turtleneck items, they have to be non-constrictive or else I'll feel like I'm being choked... But really, a black comfy turtleneck is a great piece to have in your wardrobe and it looks surprisingly cool with a short sleeve shirt. Here, the floral pattern just adds a pop of texture and charm, I like that it looks more Japanese garden than beach print uncle-wear, haha.

March: Empathy

March Empathy I'll be there for you, in the long run...

That's one of the sentences that I wish we could hear more often. So many things are going on right now, in Mexico, in the rest of the world, and I would love to see more empathy, more support, people treating each other with respect and understanding the bigger picture, not just focusing on themselves or in gaining something out of helping others.

Supporting your family, your friends, your significant others, society, the elderly, everyone in need is a skill that not many people have and that it should be engraved into every single person out there. I've seen people acting like they care or feeling pressured to say something that they don't really feel and hypocritically become a part of something; I've seen people who don't care at all and, honestly, I don't know what's worse or which kind I despise most.

For me, and this is a super personal stance so take it or leave it, it's all about empathy. Not because something doesn't happen to you or feels like a far-away-situation doesn't mean it doesn't happen, it does happen and you should care. There are many causes to defend in the world and some are closer to my heart than others but that doesn't mean I should frown upon them, you know? Empathy is about putting yourself in other people's shoes, not in a "what would I do?" kind of way but in a "I wanna understand why you do the things you do" way. That's why, with the current world situation, I feel like empathy is a good theme for March. Let us talk about things, hear each other out, understand and work together towards a better tomorrow.

Stay safe.

A Playlist to think, relax and get excited

Playlist 6 think relax get excited
I wouldn't say I'm one of those guys who can listen to every and any single music genre but I do like to listen ballads, then upbeat songs, then sad songs, then relaxing songs, then fun songs, and so on... Hahaha. With that in mind, I created a playlist that makes me feel good but also pumps me up, but also relaxes me, but also makes me reflect and think, but also gets me excited, hahaha. A bit of everything. I hope you guys enjoy it!

Flattery is the act of giving excessive compliments, I've never been too good at that. I remember my Mom telling me that I should be more diplomatic in life, that it was a good quality and it would take me places. I follow her advice 'til this day, but I always manage to stop when it looks like I'm sucking up to a person; flattering too much makes me uncomfortable so, I chose a different path: to be always nice and honest (but I try to be nice while being honest, there's no need to be harsh except, of course, when harshness is needed).

In the field that I work in, flattery is a form of currency, and I do mean every word. I've seen people literally kissing ass to others just to get a campaign with a brand, an invite to an event, you name it... The entertainment industry is tough and there's so much "fake-nice" people going around, that really drives me nuts. Maybe if I were more like them I'd be further advanced in my career but that's not who I am and it's not who I want to become so, yes, I stick to the occasional compliment and polite chit-chat, hoping that people realise that we're all out here doing our thing and value the fact that I'm being honest instead of a kiss-ass.

Moving onto the outfit, I got all the main garments during my trip to Alabama. Ever since I saw the Pringle of Scotland x H&M collection, I knew that I needed some of the pieces and this sweater really spoke to me. I like the mock turtle neck, the fact that it's a bit cropped but still has a semi-puff sleeve, the embroidery, everything, haha. I've been hunting white boots for a while and, even though these aren't the white leather Chelsea boots from Doc Martens, I found this pair from Fenty x Puma at an outlet for 35 dollars, pretty sweet huh? Plus, check out the double creeper sole, it's just fantastic. Again, I'm wearing a loose top and a tighter fit pant, it really works for me, but what do you think?

dead inside (maybe not): a post about crushes and love

Life Journal 61 dead inside (maybe not)
*QUICK DISCLAIMER: I wrote this back in October but never published it.

I'm always pretty cold when it comes to showing affection, not entirely sure why. It's not that I don't feel, I do, but I will never be that person that constantly shouts "I love you!" or that gives superlative compliments all the time, that's just not me. I recently talked about heartbreak and how to mend a broken heart because I feel like my heart has been chipped for life (and that's not a bad thing, it reminds be of what I went through and mistakes I will not repeat) and, most of the time, I feel a little dead inside when it comes to love...

BUUUUUUT, I'm here to talk about one big exception. Once in a blue moon (probably once or twice every couple years) something ignites inside me. For a guy that tends to feel nothing when it comes to love, feeling anything is a big deal, haha. So, recently, I met this girl and, of course, I fell in love, hard, haha. We were talking about life, politics, ideals, tons of things and it felt right, you know? Like, I could connect with this person on a deeper level kind of thing. It made me feel special.

Sadly, life never works the way I want it to and, turns out, she's on a good relationship that has lasted a while: bummer. But, you know, it's not all that bad. I like having a crush (especially since the last time I felt something like this was 2 years ago, with a girl from Sacramento, and nothing really happened between us). I like getting all excited and trying to charm my way in and; even if not a single thing comes out of it, it makes me feel not as dead inside as I usually feel, haha. Oh, and in case you're wondering, no, I will not pursue this thing with her, I'll just enjoy the warm and funny feelings until they disappear (yet again).

Me hizo sentir especial.

Love always,
Henry.
