Hello there, best friends! By now you should know that I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog. While it's not tightly related to fashion, reading is one of my favorite activities and I do think people within the fashion industry (and everyone else too, really) need to read things other than magazines. So far, this author has made quite a few appearances over here and today marks the 4th review on her work. If you guessed Amélie Nothomb, you are correct. This book is officially on my top 3 favorite works from her: Book Club #8 is Tokyo Fiancée, by Amélie Nothomb.

Hasta ahora, esta autora ha hecho varias apariciones aquí y hoy marca la cuarta crítica que haré sobre su trabajo. Si pensaron en Amélie Nothomb, están en lo correcto. Este libro está oficialmente entre mis tres favoritos (de ella): El Book Club #8 es Tokyo Fiancée, de Amélie Nothomb.
Love in a foreign country is a funny thing... It's a weird balance between sorting out your feelings and, also, adapting to a new life in a different place. In Tokyo Fiancée, Amélie Nothomb tells her own story, the tales of her return to Japan, her first time living alone, the battles she faces against herself and the challenges that arrive in the form of Rinri, a male Japanese student who seeks her out to learn French.
Their lives couldn't be more different: he's very noble, easily surprised, a planner; she's kind of broken, keeps a lot to herself, has a deep love for the Japanese culture and doesn't like to waste a day. What starts as a teacher-student relationship (she's 21, he's 20), evolves into a sweet romance, as sweet as Nothomb allows it to be, which makes it very peculiar. Funny, heart-breaking and powerful at the same time, this book was glued to my eyes and to my brain. I couldn't stop reading and, also, was unable to stop marking my "favorite" moments with post-its.
For me, Amélie Nothomb's books have been very easy to read and understand, but maybe that's because I'm completely fascinated by her brain. You know that game where you are asked "who would you like to have dinner with, dead or alive?", well she would definitely be present on that dinner party. I recommend to read this after The Life of Hunger (which I already reviewed and strongly suggest to be the first approach to Nothomb's mind), and, also, after Fear and Trembling (which narrates simultaneous events unrelated to love). Trust me, you'll enjoy this reading.

Sus vidas no pueden ser más diferentes: él es muy noble, ingenuo, planeador; ella está un poco dañada, guarda mucho de sí, tiene un amor profundo por la cultura japonesa y no le gusta desperdiciar los días. Lo que inicia como una relación profesor-estudiante (ella tiene 21 años, él 20), evoluciona en un dulce romance, tan dulce como Nothomb lo permite, eso lo hace muy peculiar. Divertido, rompecorazones y poderoso al mismo tiempo, este libro se pegó a mis ojos y mi cerebro. No podía dejar de leer y, también, era imposible dejar de marcar mis momentos "favoritos" con post-its.
Para mí, los libros de Amélie Nothomb han sido muy fáciles de leer y entender, pero quizá es porque estoy completamente fascinado con su cerebro. ¿Conocen ese juego de "con quién te gustaría tener una cena, vivo o muerto"?, pues ella definitivamente estaría en mi mesa. Recomiendo leer esto después de Life of Hunger (sobre el que ya hice crítica y sugiero fuertemente como el primer acercamiento a la mente de Nothomb) y, también, después de Fear & Trembling (que narra eventos simultáneos sin relación con el amor). Créanme, van a disfrutar esta lectura.
