YouTube Monthly Recap: November

Hi everyone! Hope you're doing great! November was a funny month for me. Some really cool things happened and, also, some horrible events took place. I guess it was an intense month that taught me several valuable lessons but I'm not really gonna go deep on that just yet, I guess you'll have to wait a little, hehe.

During November, I wanted to share a bit of knowledge by talking about things that I've learned as a blogger and YouTuber these past few years, it has been such an incredible ride and I can't wait to see what comes next! I also did a collaboration with another YouTuber (I love those), talked about my favourite Instagram accounts and resurrected my monthly favourites' videos. Here are all of the things that went live last month! Hope you like it!

Love always,

The Importance Of Staying True To Yourself

Wisdom #19 The Importance Of Staying True To Yourself
A friend of mine told me recently: "if you feel like a million bucks and act like it, people will start seeing you as that; the same thing happens the other way around", this proves life is heavily based on perception: the way you act is the way you're perceived. I've talked a lot about feeling confident with yourself in previous posts and I believe it's crucial to define your personality and stay true to who you are... Confidence is a classic way of making yourself relevant.

Now, I've been giving a lot of thought to what my friend said and I guess that can also be true. So, I'll be applying that to my life from now on with a bit of my previous everyday philosophies. I can stay true to myself and, at the same time, boost my personality, feel and act like a million bucks. Who knows? Maybe that's how people get attracted to others, because of that certain magnetic charming aura around them. Let's try that, instead of pretending to be someone we're not, let's elevate who we actually are and make it clear that we're here to conquer the world!

Love always,
Henry.

If you're not having fun with fashion, then you're definitely doing something wrong. Here's what I have to say: If you have to dress everyday anyways, why not have fun with that? People that don't care about fashion because they think it's shallow and superficial are missing an important point; the clothes we wear are an extension of our personality, a way of saying things without having to actually say anything.

I've never been a rich kid, therefore, I'm always really careful with the money I spend. If you take a look into my wardrobe (which you can basically do by reading the outfit posts in here), you'll see that most of my clothes come from fast-fashion brands, H&M is basically my best friend, haha. I rarely spend a lot of money on a single item, it has to be something that I really like and, even then, I'm not willing to spend more than $200 of my own money on it.

Special pieces in your closet are like the finishing touch of a project. I always like to wear those with simple outfits; here, for instance, the jacket is the star of the show and I didn't want to steal attention from it by wearing anything flashy. Sure, I have a cool pair of sunglasses (borrowed from Alex) and rings, but everything else is quite mute. I think that's a really good approach to statement pieces, mix them up with basic colours and let them shine. It's always fun to take a risk but you don't want to look like a crazy person in a costume, unless that's your thing, in that case, go for it!

Acai Bowls Are Cool

Wisdom #18 Acai Bowl Recipe
I've always liked cooking, even when deep down I know it's one of the worst investments in life (I mean, you cook for a long time and the food is gone within minutes); I mostly bake, I'm good at that but, lately, I've been hooked with making acai bowls. Of course, they're nothing new, they've been around for quite some time, the novelty aspect is making them (and I'm really good at it too).

There will be some that say acai bowls are just smoothies, what's so special about them? They're wrong, acai bowls are thicker than a smoothie and you don't drink them, they're more like a healthy-ish ice cream with a bunch of toppings, they make you feel like you're eating a healthier version of a dessert. I've seen a bunch of recipes online and they're all vegan or organic and stuff like that but; I created my own which doesn't need fancy ingredients and I'll share it with you:

For 1 serving, you'll need to mix in a blender:
  • 2 tablespoons of acai powder (I've used cacao powder and matcha, they're good substitutes);
  • 1 frozen banana chopped in circles;
  • A couple frozen berries (I always use around 5-6 strawberries);
  •  200ml of milk (I use whole milk but you can be fancy and use coconut or any other kind of milk);
  • 1 teaspoon of almond or peanut butter.
After everything is blended, pour it in a bowl and add the toppings, be creative with those! I usually go for dried berries, more fresh fruit, granola, cookies, chocolate chips, shredded coconut or even cinnamon rolls! As you can see, making acai bowl is really easy and the results are delicious!

  • 2 cucharadas de polvo de acai (también he usado cocoa y matcha, son buenos substitutos);
  • 1 plátano congelado, cortado en rodajas;
  • Un par de bayas congeladas (yo siempre uso 5-6 fresas);
  • 200 ml de leche (yo uso entera pero ustedes pueden ser elegantes y usar leche de coco o alguna de esas);
acai bowl 2 Don't forget to check out my Instagram, I post all of my bowl creations from time to time.
Have fun cooking everyone!

Henry.

"Farmer shirts", that's how I always refer to a plaid shirt; I think they're one of those garments that should be present in every single man's wardrobe: size, color, length... That doesn't matter, they're just one of those items that can really save you on a daily basis. Whether you like to dress it up (with smaller patterns and more pastel-y colours) or dress it down (bigger checks, longer lengths or tied around your waist), it's one of the most classic-eternal menswear pieces.

My love for plaid shirts began when I was in high school and it was kind of like a "gateway shirt", haha. My first couple of shirts were plaid shirts and, after that, denim, printed and solid colours followed. What I like most about a good old farmer shirt is that you can mix it up and create so many outfits, making it look different is as simple as unbuttoning it, add a tie, collar tips, tuck it in... There are a whole lot of possibilities and that makes it a grand classic piece.

Imagine my joy when I found that longline plaid shirts were a thing! I was stoked! The one I'm wearing here has been a true lifesaver because every time I use it in an outfit, I can play around and make it look different, it's really versatile and, you wanna know the best thing about it? I found it at H&M for $5, haha. So yeah, if you're looking to invest on a good shirt, plaid is the way to go, you won't regret having one (or ten).

Book Club #27: Dracula

Hey friends! As many of you know (and all of you should by now), I run an online book club here on the blog; the main goal is to find cool novels to share with you and, also, to prove a point that you can be into fashion and read more than magazines and self-motivation stuff. For this review, I chose to read a classic among classics and, believe me, it was worth it. Book Club #27 is Dracula, by Bram Stoker.

// ¡Hola amigos!
Book Club #27 Dracula Bram Stoker
A novel becomes a classic when it manages to transcend, to deliver a strong impact on an audience and make them immerse into the world an author has created within the pages of a book. Dracula, by Bram Stoker, is one of the most iconic novels in the world and, although it wasn't that successful when it came out in 1897 nor it wasn't the first novel about vampires, it managed to stay relevant and be the first work that comes to mind when people talk about vampirism (except maybe for Twilight, but you can't compare those two at all)...

One of the things that distinguishes this novel from many others is that it's told mainly in journals; instead of having a narrator overviewing everything, we get glimpses of the events happening through entries inside the journals of different characters of the novel. Dracula is a mystery novel, a thrilling action piece, that tells the story of a mysterious Count from Transylvania, how his influence affects a group of people and how terror can reign over a person's life. Somehow, you always feel uneasy about something while reading it, it's very clever.

As the plot progresses (and I don't want to tell you much about it), several clues are dropped that allow the readers to deduce that Count Dracula is, indeed, a vampire. For us, it only takes a name to guess that but transport yourselves back to the 1800s, where Dracula and vampire were not associated with each other. That's the grand beauty of this book: it transports you to that Victorian era and makes you feel very connected with each character because you're reading their journals and private letters. When people say that you should read the classics, it's because they are worthy of being called that and Dracula is magnificent in its own sense: it feels dark, twisted, nostalgic and perfectly written.

I've always said that anyone can dress in a stylish way, it's not a matter of budget, it's about having good taste and being clever with the garments we have in our wardrobe. I've already talked about modern basics on a previous post and, for this one, I want to discuss the idea of simple combos. Simplicity is a key idea when it comes to fashion; I'm sure you've heard less is more a million times and, when it comes to people who want to improve their personal style, it's one of the things that matters the most.

I created this outfit in partnership with Mango, which is a really cool not-that-expensive fast fashion brand, and I focused on black pieces: a classic black polo shirt and black skinny jeans. Those are the core garments in this outfit; since I didn't want to do an all-black ensemble, I added the sneakers with touches of gold and white; based on that, I also opted for the shiny bomber jacket with gold zippers.

If you watch carefully, there are no graphic prints in this outfit but everything is color coordinated, with black and gold being the main colours. It's a really simple and infallible combo: jeans, t-shirt, jacket and sneakers; the beauty of it comes when you find little details that automatically elevate the whole thing. Simple combos are always a good idea and they're the core of an outfit; think about it as a salad: the different types of greens are the base and what you add afterwards is what gives it a great flavour.

A matter of honesty

Life Journal 51
Honesty means a combination of honor, integrity, doing the right thing. It also implies a refusal to lie, steal or deceive others in any way. That's the classic dictionary definition and, somewhere along the way, it got tainted. What it seems like a good principle at first sight, becomes a tiresome and difficult road to follow: the right way isn't always the most efficient or faster approach and temptation to try different paths becomes stronger when people are faced with difficult choices.

In this digital era, where quantity has taken over quality, becoming and staying relevant has been a priority for many of the characters working in the industry of entertainment, the means to achieve that are not that important. Honesty is no longer a relevant factor and a bunch of people who lie are out there, claiming that it's their voice that matters. It's kind of a grey area because there's no initial malice in what these digital liars do but it becomes a problem when the lies are deceiving brands they work with and people who follow them. It's a matter of honesty, of principles; what's more important: get that campaign money or tell a true story to a real audience?

Love always,
Henry.

Modern Basics

Modern Basics
Modern Basics 2 I'm wearing:

1. Wide brim hat in brown, from H&M.
2. Denim jacket, from Zara.
3. Sleeveless t-shirt in beige, from H&M.
4. Super skinny jeans in black, from H&M.
5. Suede boots in brown, from Pull & Bear.
6. Necklace, from Mi Moneda.
7. Rings, from H&M.
It's been ages since I've spoken of something fashion-related on a post, haha. Truth is, I stopped doing that because I didn't want to be confined to just one category when it came to this blog, you know? I thought that talking just about fashion was kind of bland and empty. And yet, here we are, this post will be about fashion, I'll just try to keep things clever, haha.

When you hear the word basics, what comes to mind? To me, it's about simplicity and classic pieces, like black trousers, V-neck t-shirts and stuff like that. I used to be a simple t-shirt and jeans kind of guy but my sense of style evolved into a more is more kind of thing for a couple years and, nowadays, I've managed to tone it down and find my happy in-between spot. Sometimes I'll wear a lot of pieces and go a little crazy and others, I'll be fine with skinny jeans, a t-shirt and a denim jacket.

A basic piece doesn't have to be boring, though. It's all about how you mix and match the things you have to create the best outfit possible. Remember that we live in a world of first impressions and the things we wear say a lot about our personalities. With modern basics, I'm referring to simple garments that still represent who you are and can be versatile without being a simple V-neck tee: a hat, a denim jacket, a mute-coloured shirt... Those are all uncomplicated pieces that can elevate your style game without a huge monetary investment and without making you feel like you're wearing a costume. (Modern) Simplicity wins.

Blogger Mistakes

Wisdom #17 Blogger Mistakes
Think about your favourite blogger for a minute... Is his or her life seemingly perfect? I don't know exactly when this happened, maybe it was because of Instagram, but it seems like every blogger out there tried (tries) to make everything about his/her life look perfect: the perfect meals, the perfect outfit photo, the perfect "waking up-breakfast in bed"... It's funny, since we've all done it at some point but, you know what? It's mostly a lie and a mistake.

As bloggers, and since we have to constantly update our social media, it's sort of appealing to show a perfect life, one that people should look up to, without problems. In reality, all of us struggle at some point; and sure, it's nice to see an Instagram gallery filled with pretty photos but I think some of us are trying to go (or will go) for something different, still aesthetic but a bit more real, not only the "glamorous" side of our lives, but also the everyday rough aspects of it.

The amount of stress we put ourselves into in our quest for perfect photos is ridiculous. I was talking about this with a blogger friend the other day and she acknowledged that and I think it's time to walk a different path. It's our job to publish the best quality work possible but it's also important to keep it real and achievable. Of course, sometimes I'll make a really pretty acai bowl and I'll post it on Instagram but the important thing is that I did it because I wanted a nice breakfast (and I ate the whole thing) not because I thought it would be rad and get me tons of likes. You see where I'm going with this, right?

Love always,
Henry.

November: Time For Classics

November Classics
Life is filled with challenges...

Last month was particularly hard for me and I allowed the situations and challenges I faced defeat me, I gave up and let myself drown... But that had to stop and, in certain ways, it has. So, I'm choosing to focus on being the best version of myself I can be, of soaring high and working on my emotional well being.

I was talking to a blogger friend the other day and she said something that I feel it's very valuable, she talked about going back to basics and remembering why we started our blogs and the mission we had back then. For November, I chose the theme Classics, because I realised that it's important to honour the things that worked for us in the past and the mission we took on back when we started doing what we do.

For me, a classic is an idea that never goes out of style (and I'm not only referring to fashion here); the spectrum is big and the hues are endless. The subjects I'll be addressing throughout this month will revolve around that, going back to basics and honouring the classics. I will work really hard to make this a good month in terms of content and I hope to surprise you once or twice with the ideas that I will come up with. It's a new month and that also means there's a new playlist that goes with it; please check it out by clicking here or going directly to my YouTube channel.

The dark days are over...
