July: Finishing What You Started

July Finish What You Started Sometimes, a break is much needed...

I've realised that it's extremely hard for me to know exactly when I need to take a break from things. Maybe that's why I get sick due to stress and stuff like that, maybe that's why I feel overwhelmed most of the time. I didn't know I needed a break from blogging and editing photos and writing posts until I was deep in the final week of June and told myself: you need to get rid of some of this pressure you're putting on yourself, if you try to compensate and do a bunch of posts at once, you'll only get exhausted. It's okay to take a breather. And a breather I took, a much needed one because I'm recovering from a terribly stressful week.

Being on quarantine has affected us in very different ways but I can only speak for myself and say that it has really taken a toll on my mental health and I'm not sure I'm dealing with things in the best way possible. I exhaust myself some days and, on others I don't want to do anything and I feel like staying in bed all day... But then I feel guilty and exhaust myself all over again. That's not healthy. I'm a competitive guy, as I'm sure I've mentioned before, and at times the hardest competitor I face is myself. I don't let myself off the hook easily and I think I put so much unnecessary pressure on my shoulders because I'm messy and I can't seem to follow my own plans, that needs to change.

I'm also a resilient person. I don't take things for granted and I'm always fighting with myself, with the world, even with Internet algorithms, I don't quit easily and I hate giving up. "Finish what you started" is a saying that has remained close to my heart and one that I easily ignore as well. I start a million things (and sure, I eventually finish them all) but fail to follow through in a steady manner, I need to change that as well. Small or big goals, tough or easy challenges, I need to get my sh*t together and figure out a way to organise myself, to finish the things I start and, also, to relieve some of the weight I purposely carry on my shoulders.

Stay with me, let's figure things out.

May: ReBuilt

May Rebuilt Stopping things and changing focus...

Somehow, being weirdly trapped at home has put a stop into my life plans, partly because I'm unable to do many things but also because it seems as if certain parts of the world and the things I see seem to have stopped or taken a pause. I believe there are two ways of looking at this: when things stop, you get sad, you get frustrated and, therefore, stop everything around you (I've been doing that and it's not getting me anywhere) AND, here's the money, the second approach, which consists on changing your focus onto the processes that are in motion and finding a way to keep moving.

The current global situation isn't nice, it's not pretty and, quite frankly, I hate everything about it. Things are more expensive, my work and partnerships with brands have been slowed down to amoeba speed, my sense of privacy has been deeply distorted and, last but never least, my emotional health has taken a toll. I thought that since people would be stuck at home, they'd be more appreciative of internet content (my content) but it's not the case, I'm still struggling, I'm still figuring things out and it's super frustrating.

Changing my focus and staying positive is so easy to say, so easy to think, but it's hard to put that in motion, to start something new. However, what else is there to do? If you fail, try and try again and, when your consequent attempts fail the target, try and try and try harder. I need that to be my motto, to keep myself motivated, to rebuilt and strengthen the parts of my that have been shattered in the past year or so. Let us try and try and try and try things, rebuild ourselves, it's the best we can do to survive.

Let us try and try and try and try things, it's the best we can do to survive.

April: Apocalypse Now

april apocalypse now
If you'd ask me how things were a month ago...

Well, my answer would be a completely different thing than it is now. Welcome to our own little apocalypse, best friends. It took a global pandemic virus to get us confined in the "safety" of our homes (some of us, at least). Back in March, all the talk about Coronavirus wasn't really a concern of mine, I was busier trying to understand how I can live in a country so violent, so misogynistic and old-fashioned as Mexico, and trying to figure out the best way of helping out others.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still very concerned about that situation but it seems like we're stuck in a weird place where most of the concern circles around public health, politics, a certain sense of collective fear of what may come and, of course, a general apathy towards the state of society as of late. I talk about this era, this new normal, as a version of the apocalypse because it's destroying many things that we've established (good and bad). These past few weeks, being aware and practicing social distance, trying to stay home as much as possible and, frankly, struggling to get much done have been difficult at times but, overall, strange for me. I wish I could do so much more to help, change the way things are, to keep the focus on so many other topics that I feel are relevant to us a society... Still, my mind keeps going back and forth without much of an answer.

Having a lifestyle blog doesn't seem as relevant to me as it felt, say, two months ago but; I have to keep focusing on doing what I do best: finding the balance between the things I want to talk about and the things that somehow work in the internet. The apocalypse is described (Bible references aside) as an event involving destruction or damage on a catastrophic scale: that's the moment we're living now and it's unknown if we'll ever go back to the things we once considered normal (I honestly don't think we are, but hey, let's keep the optimism going). So, throughout this month, I'll try to find things that are worth talking about mixed with our usual doses of fashion, music, anecdotes and wisdom. Let's get weird together.

Love always,

Bienvenidos a nuestro pequeño apocalipsis mejores amigos.

March: Empathy

March Empathy I'll be there for you, in the long run...

That's one of the sentences that I wish we could hear more often. So many things are going on right now, in Mexico, in the rest of the world, and I would love to see more empathy, more support, people treating each other with respect and understanding the bigger picture, not just focusing on themselves or in gaining something out of helping others.

Supporting your family, your friends, your significant others, society, the elderly, everyone in need is a skill that not many people have and that it should be engraved into every single person out there. I've seen people acting like they care or feeling pressured to say something that they don't really feel and hypocritically become a part of something; I've seen people who don't care at all and, honestly, I don't know what's worse or which kind I despise most.

For me, and this is a super personal stance so take it or leave it, it's all about empathy. Not because something doesn't happen to you or feels like a far-away-situation doesn't mean it doesn't happen, it does happen and you should care. There are many causes to defend in the world and some are closer to my heart than others but that doesn't mean I should frown upon them, you know? Empathy is about putting yourself in other people's shoes, not in a "what would I do?" kind of way but in a "I wanna understand why you do the things you do" way. That's why, with the current world situation, I feel like empathy is a good theme for March. Let us talk about things, hear each other out, understand and work together towards a better tomorrow.

Stay safe.

February: The Comeback

February The Comeback
Going away and coming back is not easy...

I will not say that taking time off from the blog didn't stress me out when it was supposed to lighten my workload because I'd be lying and I hate lies. I was sick, yes; during October, my shingles flared up again and it was a freaking nightmare, seriously, I never ever thought I'd be faced with that nasty virus for a second time, that put everything on hold, my work, my life, every single thing... But hey, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and it's about time to make a comeback.

You might or might not notice that there are a few changes here in the blog (I hope you do, tho!), a redesign of sorts; I've been wanting to do that for ages, really. I shot these photos over a year ago and they were kept under wraps precisely because they were part of my planned re-design, so: new illustrations, new layout, simplified things, new ideas. That's what a proper blogger comeback should include, don't you think?

In the near future, I'll adjust certain post dynamics, make a few changes here and there, everything I can do to improve your experience in this website. I know that I've lost a lot of readership audience due to my absence, plus, people seem to read less and less nowadays; still, I can't help but loving the whole writing schtick, it's my calling, it's one of the things I care about most and truly enjoy and, who knows, maybe blogs will have a comeback in the near future, right? Anyhow, this month's theme is all about that: coming back, coming back stronger, facing adversity and adapting to new scenarios. I hope you, my beautiful reader who still, well, reads, enjoy the ride and keep coming back for more.

Love and healing hugs,

Amor y abrazos sanadores,

October: Feel Special

October Feel Special
When was the last time you felt special?

I was talking to my sister the other day and, randomly I swear, somehow I ended up realising that I haven't been on a date in, like, 4 years, haha. The last time I fell in love was around three years ago, in Sacramento, with a girl that I can only describe as being super similar to Cassie from Skins, a.k.a. the girl of my dreams. Sadly, that didn't quite work out in my favour because her best friend (a guy) had a thing for me and, of course, she took his side and I never saw her again. Yet, the 12 minutes we spent dancing in the club and the half an hour she held my hand in the car-ride home made me feel all tingly and warm inside, made me feel special.

There are many ways of feeling special, you know? It doesn't have to involve infatuation. I always feel special when people sing "happy birthday" to me; I feel special when I receive a genuine compliment, when somebody recognises me on the street, when people think of me. I remember watching Love Alarm (this Korean show), there was this scene that made me tear up when a little boy is taking care of another one and he says that he's gonna be there for him and, in exchange, all he has to do is think of him and be happy to have him in his life. That made him feel special.

This month's theme is about that, the things that make us feel special, warm and fuzzy inside, the moments we treasure. Like I said, it doesn't necessarily revolve around love, the spectrum is a lot richer than just that. And, also, I guess I kind of want to keep the posts a bit lighter this time around, if that makes sense. I'm not all rainbows and sunshine all the time but, every now and then, it's good to keep things on a hopeful and positive note, right?

Make sure you think of me, okay?
Love,

September: Constantly Evolving

September Constantly Evolving Evolution is a constant in our lives...

Whether we like it or not, life takes us places. Even if we stay still, the world around us keeps on moving forward. We see ourselves grow, see people we know us change, scenarios mutate and, at the end of the day, I think we all try our hardest to keep up with the world, that's kind of our mission, our duty. Ever since I was little, I remember associating my growth with school, education, it was as if the grade I was in was what determined my behaviour, the things I was supposed to be doing (or avoiding), the way I needed to act and how I selected the people I surrounded myself with.

Sadly (at least for me), school ends and we're thrown in this grown-up world where educational hierarchies are replaced with a different set of rules to determine superiority over others. In Japan, they tend to use the terms senpai and kouhai (senior and junior, respectively) as a system to always be aware of who has a higher ranking in society, they maintain that even after being finished with school and apply it onto their lives at work. In Western society, it seems like it's more about looks, money, popularity and, more recently, social media following, than it is about attaining a higher level of education or age. Both systems have their own pros and cons.

Being done with college and having no budget for a Master's degree (at the moment) makes it seem as if my educational journey has come to an end; of course, I'm still learning tons of stuff and I can teach myself a new trick or two every now and then but it's not quite the same as going to school and having projects with a deadline that serve to move forward in school life and no other particular purpose. Yet, school or not, I'm still constantly evolving (we all are), the moments we experience along the way enrich our minds and souls; that's why, throughout this month, I want to talk about the continuous process of evolution, how we change and how we adapt to a changing world.

Love, love,
Firma Hen Evia 200

August: Endings & Beginnings

August Endings and Beginnings It had to end, otherwise it was forever...

Growing up scares me, it's always been this way. Since I was 14 or so, I've had this "Peter Pan complex" where the whole idea of getting older makes me really uncomfortable. After that, a few years later, I thought that remaining 19 forever would be a great thing, 19 was just the sweet spot for me during that time... Then I thought about being legal everywhere in the world and opted for 21, just because it was more convenient than 19...

Clearly, life doesn't work that way and I think it's important to learn how to end things before starting new chapters in our lives. Certain things I had or did when I was 19, 21 (and even younger than that) still make me feel nostalgic. In some ways, I feel like I was more intelligent back then (because I hadn't graduated from Uni yet); in others, of course, I feel like I'm more mature and have grown up quite a bit: getting older has never (and I think will never be) an easy thing to accept for me and yet; time doesn't stop for anyone, things end, things begin.

I might be feeling like this because it's August and my birthday is just around the corner; I love my birthday, it's a big big deal for me but somehow, I don't feel like doing much of a celebration this year, maybe it's because nothing great, worth of a celebration, has happened and I'm feeling a bit stuck, I don't really know... Maybe thinking about the things that have ended and the new possibilities that might come will help, that's why I chose this theme for August: endings, beginnings, hellos and goodbyes. I hope something interest comes out of this, haha.

Love, love,

July: Limits

July Limits Putting a stop to things...

Man, that's not an easy thing to do. As much as I love seeing the world through a diversity lens, in certain situations, things can really be black or white. I'm precisely referring to people who abuse and people who are abused. In everydayness, you can meet both, heck, you can actually be both! But that's not my point here, I want to talk about limits and their importance. Abusers tend to keep abusing unless you put a stop to them and actions that cause those results can come in many different shapes.

I've been in both sides of the spectrum and I have some insight on power, which was the main reason I pushed people down in the past. As someone who likes control, I'm not gonna lie, feeling powerful is an amazing rush. I liked to control people around me and make them do things but, don't get scared, that's not who I am anymore (and I never, ever, did anything truly awful to anybody, ok? It was mainly school stuff). Who I am now, however, isn't ideal either because I constantly let people push me around and that's not okay.

Recent events have led me to want to speak up a bit more, you know? It's not like I have a terrible, terrible story to tell (because I don't), it's mostly a compilation of really mundane things that happen to me, things that have been building up throughout the years until a boiling point was reached, all because I didn't know how to set limits properly. I chose limits as this month's theme because not only do I want to share some knowledge and wisdom about the subject, I also want to practice certain things myself. So, let's hope this will be a good learning experience for us all.

Much love,

June: The Flower Road

June The Flower Road Don't be down...

There's this Korean saying that goes something like Let's only walk the flower road and it means something like: things will get better and I wish us the best of luck, stuff like that. Sometimes life doesn't happen like we want it to and we face struggles, bad things happening to us, hardships... I know that too well but, I also feel like it's important to keep a serene face and hope for the best every time we try a new solution, you know?

The flower road (at least in my mind) is something like a path where things flow and success happens. I've always wanted to be good at things, the very best I could be, I like to think that I'm a good leader, a hard worker, someone that has a certain fire and passion for what I do but; sometimes that's not enough, sometimes life gets in the way and makes everything a bit blurry. Sometimes the flower road is nowhere in sight and, my friends, that feeling of being lost, of not being able to find your way, is terrifying.

This month I wanna focus on the quest for the flower road, how to get there, what to do when you feel like it's nowhere near you and how to make others walk in that same road. Being completely honest here, I don't know if I'm in the best state of mind at the moment, but I want to try and focus on the positive things around me and maybe, just maybe, this quest here on the blog will eventually help on fulfilling something for me, for you, for everyone, in real life. Guess we'll have to wait and see, huh?

Let's only walk the flower road.

No estés mal...

Let's only walk the flower road.
