Sometimes, every single person you counted on will fail you and it will be up to you to get creative and make the best out of a bad situation. That happened to me, quite recently in fact, when I was supposed to go to a wedding (two blogger friends got married outside the city) and all the bloggers and mutual friends bailed at the last minute. I was left with all this rushed planning and stress because I relied on them and not on myself. But, hey, in the end, I was able to make it, even when I had to go by myself.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that you can't really depend on anybody and, frankly, you shouldn't. The moment you start relying on people to do things you need or help you in any way, you get slower and unable to completely fulfill your vision... And here's another story, every year I throw a birthday party and recruit my two best friends to help me cook one day before; well, this year, one of them is going abroad to study a Master's and won't be here for my party and the other, the one I 100% counted on since the other one was gone, bailed one day before (and I can't blame her, really, she has her own stuff going on). What's the lesson here? Again, don't depend on others.

When people fail me, I get stressed, mainly because I counted on their help, so what's left? Being my own hero. I need to rescue myself from my chaos, create a strategy to be more efficient and manage to finish everything on time. It's always challenging but those struggles are the ones that make us grow. The moment we become our own heroes, that's when we no longer wait for things to happen or for people to solve our problems, that's when we put on our capes and fly away, beating all the obstacles that come our way.

Problem Solver

Wisdom #68 Problem Solver
I fix things, it’s what I do, what I’ve done for a very long time. If everyone’s supposed to play a role in life, mine definitely has everything to do with helping people (even when they don’t wanna be helped); with taking the reigns of different projects and being a team leader and; as learned recently, with teaching the things I’m good at, my “craft”, to others (like my fellow blogger and YouTuber friends).

I’ve been helping my friend Alex with her YouTube channel recently and, in ways I didn’t expect, she has ended up teaching me tons of things about myself. It was thanks to her that I realised how much of a problem solver I am, how creative I really am when it comes to producing stuff and coming up with strategies... And it’s not about bragging here or anything like that, it’s about accepting myself, the things I’m good at and my role in life, in order to move forward and keep growing.

Love always,
Henry.

Trump card, a valuable resource, often a surprise, used to gain an advantage, to win at life. I like winning, haha, always have; I remember being in elementary school and being super competitive at everything, so much that my teachers would tell my mom and dad that there was something wrong with me and that I didn't know how to be a team player... They never really listened to them and I'm glad about that.

Things are sort of different now, I'm still competitive (I'll always will be) but it sucks when you can't control the scenario you are competing in. I feel like I do a really good job when it comes to personal style, the way I present myself, my content (here and on YouTube) and everything, but success doesn't knock on my door that often, people with way worse videos and photos get ahead of me and that makes me feel a bit vulnerable and uneasy.

But I do have hope, you know? I've been doing this for a long time and I'm not ready to give up. It's only a matter of time before I finally throw a boomerang that will come back to me and hit the jackpot. My trump card is my tenacity, ambition and my focus on being the best possible version of me and that, my friends, will be rewarded one day, I'm sure of it. As long as we keep on knocking hard, one door will eventually open and; when we get the jumpstart we need, we'll conquer the world.

The Expiry Date

Does age really define who we are and the things we're meant and able to do? As you may or may not know, August is my birth month and the closer I get to my birthday (on the 29th), the more nervous and anxious I get... And that's because I haven't achieved all the things I wanted for this moment in my life, I feel like I'm stuck in this limbo where I don't look older, physically, nor do I feel a significant psychological change. I see my classmates from Uni and many of them already look older, I don't know if it's because they work 9 to 5 jobs or what, but I look and feel way younger than them... Yet, the fact that my age number increases every year puts a heavy weight on my shoulders.

I was watching a YouTube video from Jenn Im the other day and (sponsored as it was) she talked about the pressure of ageing; it seems like this world (especially the entertainment industry) is obsessed with youth and that makes you start to feel like you have an expiration date, a deadline; she mentioned this short film (you can watch it below) called The Expiry Date, and the key message within it is that you're more than your age and it's up to you to change your destiny and the way people perceive you. I realise that I'm my worst enemy and pressure myself in ways that I shouldn't because I'm scared of being older. This short film, and Jenn's video, woke me up and know that I see one of the sources of my angst and worries, I can start figuring out a way of tackling it. Wish me luck!

Henry.

When I was little, my mom used to tell me about how she dressed and how fashion was back in her day. She told me that every season was very strict and heavily relied on a theme: navy season, safari season, black and white season, so every time fashion changed, she had to get rid of 90% of her wardrobe and buy new stuff to remain "fashionable", she would shop in the US to stay two steps ahead of everyone else in Mexico... Things were very different, huh?

One of the things that I love about fashion lately is that you can keep pieces in your closet for a very long time. I remember trying my first pair of skinny jeans (that weren't even that skinny) back in 2010 and here I am, 8 years later, still wearing super tight pants, haha. Of course, you have certain garments that go in and out of fashion (neons, animal print, high/low waisted pants) but I feel like now you're allowed to extend the life of your clothes before throwing them away, plus, that's a lot less wasteful than how it used to be!

I like how fashion rules are bending more and more recently; even when I don't like certain combos, it's nice to feel like you can wear anything you want. I bet no one would've thought blazers and caps could work well together back in the 50s, and here I am wearing them both in the same outfit. Fashion and personal style have a constant process of mix and match, finding what goes well with what, getting creative by putting certain pieces together and creating strategies to prolong the lives of your garments. We have to wear clothes everyday anyways, so, why not have a bit of fun during the process?

Living alone has taught me so many things. The first time, it was me (plus 5 roommates) in Seoul as a student, and from that era I learned that I could be responsible, stay out of other people's business, be, loyal, a good friend and, overall, a good roommate. I also learned (after coming back home) that I shouldn't have taken everything as personal as I did back then but, you know, the past is past, and that's a different tale to tell...

Now that I live alone again (with my older sister as a roommate), I've learned a whole lot more. You know how sometimes you have to go through the worst so the rest of your life goes on a bit easier? That is exactly what's happening... We used to fight so much during the first few months, living without my mom intervening (even though she was coaching me over the phone and stuff like that, haha), we had to basically separate 90% of expenses, experiences and activities together to avoid conflict and now, two years later, we still fight and it's draining.

Well, we fought yesterday about something that confirmed to me how selfish she can be, but that's not what I want to talk about... Something incredible happened, I was able to turn my emotions off, to be cool, distant (and frankly, a bit soap opera calm crazy) and avoid the fight. For the first time in ages, I was like: "you know what? This isn't worth my time" so, while she was still pretty much fired up, I was in a weird state of bliss. That, my friends, is creating a strategy, choosing when to strike and when to fall back; it's the purest definition of choosing your battles.

Do you need to plan ahead?

Do You Need To Plan Ahead
I used to make fun of my mom because she was always making lists for everything... But you know how, as you grow older, you start to become more and more like your parents? Well, now I can't seem to stop writing them down, hahaha, it's the only way to keep track of what I do and, also, a nice way of keeping my to-do list in check. I have lists on my phone, on notebooks, pretty much everywhere and, after a really good talk to a close friend, I realised that, even when they're incredibly useful, it's time to take my "list habits" to the next level.

I'm talking about planning ahead, creating a sort of calendar/schedule to make sure I'm achieving everything I need to (in time) and don't miss any due dates. I usually write everything on an open notebook: on the left side, I have an event calendar and; on the right, I have a check-list... But that hasn't been enough, not lately. I want to give this new planning idea a go, to write down everything I need to be posting, sharing, creating; the events, the shoots and recording days; write down ideas I get on the way and make sure everything is a lot more organised to maximise efficiency. So, if you ask me do I need to start planning ahead to keep my life in check, in order? The answer is YES, all the way.

Love always,
Henry.

A Change Will Do You Good

I'm wearing:

If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again... That's what I need to tell myself every single day. Being a good content creator is not easy, I always ask too much of myself because I want to try and put something interesting out there and, if not ground-breaking (because, nowadays, that's so hard to achieve), professional. I always care about the quality and creative aspects of what I share with the world.

A few weeks ago, I had a meeting with my management team (in case you didn't know, I have a manager) and we started talking about ways to improve my YouTube channel and social media and in that moment it hit me: I've been staying inside a bubble, a comfort zone of sorts, where I feel like I'm doing amazing things but really I'm keeping things safe... So we agreed that some stuff needs to change and I'm willing to try new routes to achieve different results.

Hearing that the things you produce need to change is never easy because, if you're anything like me, I rarely give in but I also never give up, so if the people that are managing my career say that I need to change a few things and that it will be good for me, then I'll give it a shot. In life, you have to try stepping out of your comfort zone and taking risks, sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don't, but, in this endless quest for success I refuse to remain stuck, so, wish me luck and let us see this unfold.

August: Creativity & Strategy

August Creativity and Strategy Sometimes you feel like giving up...

Like you're ready to throw the towel because nothing you do seems to work out the way you planned it to. But, you know, that's just how life is: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, the way you handle things is what's really important here; for me, creativity is reinterpreting reality and arranging elements in a clever way and, in order to do that and to make it work, you need a plan, you need strategy.

The focus of this month is creativity and strategy, how you might think that you're stuck but, in reality, you just need to refocus your efforts and create, do something that will help you deal with your inner crisis. I believe that, no matter how smart you are, if you're not creative when it comes to solving problems and/or crafting, then you're efforts will never be truly appreciated. Life is a balancing act, at times it might feel like it's too much but, with the right guidance and clever ways of doing things, it gets a lot better.

August is my birth month and one that I don't really love anymore because I hate the idea of getting older; however, it's also a month that has proven to be specially challenging for me, tons of new things are coming, new ways of doing them as well. Amongst my chaotic thoughts, some things have started to click and I wanna set everything into motion, creating a sort of renaissance. Expect to see that reflected on the blog, my YouTube channel and my social media platforms. Big things are coming and, with creativity and strategy, new goals will be achieved. If you want some new music, check out the latest playlist by clicking here, it goes along great with this letter.

Let's make things work.
