Why You Need To Watch Unbelievable

I've watched so many good shows this year, some more poignant than others... That's why I want us to talk about Unbelievable, it's this new limited series from Netflix, starring Kaitlyn Dever as a teenager charged with lying about being raped (she didn't lie) after the cops coerce her to say that her assault didn't happen; Toni Colette and Merritt Wever as two detectives looking to find the rapist who attacked Dever's character and many others. Rape is a very delicate subject, but Unbelievable has this way of looking deeper into the victims/survivors (instead of focusing on the criminal's mind) in such an insightful and graceful way. Oh, and did I mention it's based on a true story?

8 episodes, I devoured them in a single night. It's been ages since a show captivated me in that way but this one did. Not only it's about a very big and important subject, it's perfectly scripted, perfectly performed, it draws you in and makes you feel frustrated, uncomfortable, helpless, hopeful and so much more throughout the season. After watching it, I felt so mad but also useless, haha, not in a terrible way but somehow I learned that no one's really safe and that we need to support and be there  for each other, it's important that we start talking about sexual assault and that we help each other out.  I'm predicting Unbelievable will receive tons of accolades during the next awards' season and it completely deserves it. You have to watch it.

Henry.

Why is EUPHORIA a relevant show in 2019?

euphoria
Is it the amazing crazy make up? The racial diversity in its cast? Maybe. Euphoria is this fairly recent show from HBO and I like to refer to it as the new Skins, because I see some similarities between the two (although I think Skins had way better character development and plot lines), yet I still got super excited after hearing that Euphoria would be airing. I like Zendaya but I don't necessarily love her character (Rue); after watching the whole season, I realised that I don't have a favourite character, there's something I like about everyone and something I heavily dislike too.

But going back to the title of this post, why is Euphoria relevant? Sure, it has some dazzling scenes, I love how it's filmed, edited, directed and all that, but I think that the main reason why Euphoria is gaining momentum is because it's current, like, nudes are our currency current, haha; one of the main characters (Jules) is a trans girl and I love how that doesn't even matter, it's just there; they mostly talk about sexuality as an spectrum where no one is 100% one thing and they say it in such a casual way, I find that very refreshing.

A few of the plot lines are very strange and some characters are not developed that well; I think if you're very strict and have a black or white kind of personality, you might not like this show; if you're a very conservative person, you might not like this show; if you're very extravagant, you might enjoy it for different reasons (like the fashion or makeup choices)... With this I mean it's not a show for everyone but that's the thing, being more open-minded and learning isn't something everyone can do. So, if you watched it or if you plan to watch it, think about the state of the world in 2019 and how it is portrayed, think about why it feels current and if you don't feel it is, do some digging, some exploring, you might discover something new and different along the way... Oh, by the way, it's been renewed for a second season! (:

// ¿Es el maquillaje tan alocado? ¿La diversidad racial en el elenco? Tal vez.

Love always,
Henry.

The Expiry Date

Does age really define who we are and the things we're meant and able to do? As you may or may not know, August is my birth month and the closer I get to my birthday (on the 29th), the more nervous and anxious I get... And that's because I haven't achieved all the things I wanted for this moment in my life, I feel like I'm stuck in this limbo where I don't look older, physically, nor do I feel a significant psychological change. I see my classmates from Uni and many of them already look older, I don't know if it's because they work 9 to 5 jobs or what, but I look and feel way younger than them... Yet, the fact that my age number increases every year puts a heavy weight on my shoulders.

I was watching a YouTube video from Jenn Im the other day and (sponsored as it was) she talked about the pressure of ageing; it seems like this world (especially the entertainment industry) is obsessed with youth and that makes you start to feel like you have an expiration date, a deadline; she mentioned this short film (you can watch it below) called The Expiry Date, and the key message within it is that you're more than your age and it's up to you to change your destiny and the way people perceive you. I realise that I'm my worst enemy and pressure myself in ways that I shouldn't because I'm scared of being older. This short film, and Jenn's video, woke me up and know that I see one of the sources of my angst and worries, I can start figuring out a way of tackling it. Wish me luck!

Henry.

Good Girls

I haven't laughed so much watching a drama show since Desperate Housewives was airing almost a decade ago, Good Girls is that good, haha. I recently binge watched (sort of) the entire first season in three days and I can't wait for the second one; it tells the story of three mothers living in the suburbs, how desperate for money they are, and this isn't a real spoiler, how they rob a supermarket where gangsters were laundering money and, finally, how that changes their lives for good.

The three leads are completely different women with powerful stories: Beth, played by Christina Hendricks, is very housewife-y but a killer liar; Ruby (played by Retta) has a daughter who needs a kidney transplant but that doesn't make her sappy and sad, she's actually the funniest of the trio and; lastly, Annie (Mae Whitman), a young mom who's very annoying, is always screwing things up but (as much as I dislike her) she's one of those crucial characters in the show. Good Girls is fun when you least expect it, it made me excited, made me cry and, overall, is juicy enough to keep you wanting more. Netflix released it globally earlier this month and, trust me, it's one of the best things I've watched this year.

Love always,
Henry.

Legion

You know how some shows go really deep into psychological issues and stuff like that? Could you imagine having that but in the X-Men universe? That’s Legion. A show about Charles Xavier’s (Professor X and founder of the X-Men) son; a man called David Haller, who has struggled with mental issues, anger problems and substance abuse. If the premise of this show sounds dark, that's because it is. It’s heavy, somber and twisted (with some lighter and funny moments caught in between).

I’ve been a big X-Men fan since I was little; I watched another related show called The Gifted (which features certain other characters from the comics and it’s awesome in its own way) and that kind of re-sparked my love for this Marvel franchise. Legion starts slow, a bit tedious even, but it quickly picks up the pace and becomes a really really cool and interesting show to watch. If you’re a fan of suspense, mental distress and the X-Men, you’ll love Legion.

Henry.

Digimon Adventure Tri

Digimon Adventure Tri poster sm
Digimon Adventure Tri reached its end a few days ago. I don’t know if you know this, but Digimon is really important to me, it was one of my favourite shows when I was little and a big influence in how I think and perceive the world (and I mean that). Digimon has been a source of inspiration to me and one of the ways I keep my imagination and inner child, both, alive. Three years ago, Digimon was revived and a sequel project (6 movies) began.

At first I couldn’t contain my excitement. I watched and rewatched the first movie, I even did an editorial inspired by the male characters (see that photo shoot here). I watched the second movie in Japan, the third in the US... No matter where I went, Digimon was always with me. Now that this project is over, I can’t help but feel sad. It’s amazing how many shows from my childhood are getting sequels but it’s always bittersweet to see them ending. Nostalgia is a powerful marketing tool, and maybe that’s why Digimon Tri or Dragon Ball Super are successful.

Just like its predecessor, Tri taught me many things. It’s amazing to see how characters from the show grow up, change, evolve, the same way I did. That’s one of the recurring themes in Digimon: growing up... And I related to so many of the characters and their struggles. Sure, there were a few plot holes and not completely baked ideas along the way but my heart just didn’t care, it was full, I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters (again) just yet. I heard that there’s a new related project in the works and I truly hope my wish for more Digimon comes true.

Love always,
Henry.

The Devil Is A Part-Timer

One of the things I love most about anime is that the episodes are short, usually around 20-23 minutes; I like to watch something when I have a meal but I eat fast and, being honest, I'm always in a rush and arriving late everywhere, haha; I can easily watch one episode while eating and still feel like I'm not wasting much time. I tend watch shows with action, magic or stuff like that but, from time to time, I really enjoy a funny anime, that's how I found The Devil is a Part-Timer.

At first glance, it's the story of how a devil overlord (Satan) from a different dimension and one of his minions end up in Tokyo, with a hero of justice after them... But it's so much more. I loved this anime because it's unexpected, it really takes what you think about stereotypically good and evil characters and twist it within funny scenarios. It's the perfect mix between fantasy, action and comedy. The downside is that it's only 13 episodes long, the ending feels inconclusive and there are no plans for a second season. Still, it's definitely worth watching, I guarantee you won't regret it.

The Devil is a Part-Timer.

Love always,
Henry.

Nostalgia: Dragon Ball Super

So many shows have been getting sequels, remade, revivals, these past few years! And, although I respect the idea of letting an idea run its course, I can't help but feel happy about that, really freakin' happy. I wanna talk about one show that I watched when I was a kid: Dragon Ball Z (and yes, I know that it all began with Dragon Ball and Z was a sequel but Z was the first one I enjoyed, okay?).

Sometime around 2015, the official Dragon Ball Z sequel began airing, they called it Dragon Ball Super. I knew it existed but never really paid much attention to it. They released 2 movies that were expanded within the show, I knew about them but didn't watch them either. Well, a few months ago, my best friend came by and we watched an episode; then, 2 or 3 weeks go, I decided to watch the whole thing and, friends, it's been a great decision.

I'm halfway through the show now (it ended this past weekend) and now I see Dragon Ball and its characters with a whole new set of mind (let's face it, I was a lot less demanding when I was 11). I see the things that I love and the things that I really dislike, I appreciate character development and suffer with the filler episodes, haha. I know that Dragon Ball Super isn't perfect, I know that it appeals to people coming from a nostalgic place but I don't really care. It has given me a chance to "interact" with characters that helped me grow up and it feels, well, super.

Love always,
Henry.

The Duff

There are two movies that I always go to when I wanna laugh: Mean Girls and Easy A; they're clever, funny, quotable and, I don't know, I think they kind of defined my generation. It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, you probably know a line or two from those scripts. Well, I was browsing the Netflix catalogue this past week and found the third member of this Holy Trinity: The Duff.

At first, I thought it would be your average American romantic comedy but it's so much more than that. It ticks the three boxes I mention above: it's funny, clever and quotable. Basically, it tells the story of an average high school girl and how she realises that she's a D.U.F.F. (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). The rest of the movie is about changing (and sort of embracing) that. The leads are likeable, it's well paced, some supporting characters (like her mom and some teachers) are hilarious and, overall, it's a fun movie with a powerful message (that I won't tell you because you have to watch it).

Among this Holy Trinity of mine, The Duff ranks 3rd out of the three, but, that doesn't make it any less valuable. I couldn't stop watching and I think I'll have to watch it like two or three more times so I can fully understand and start quoting it, haha. Here's the trailer, give it a chance, you won't regret it!

Love always,
Henry.
