The Importance of Short-Term Goals

the importance of short term goals

In case I haven't said this a million times before: I have control issues, I like to plan things and checklists are tools that I live by... That has been a double edged sword in my life for years and years, especially during this pandemic era where we have zero control over everything that's going on in the world. Being unable to do the things I want to do, have less work and paid opportunities, attempting to exercise indoors and dealing with having my sister working from home hasn't been easy. During these tough days, I've realised that long-term goals are a bit, well, too long-term, so I've decided to focus on the immediate tasks at hand: the short-term goals.

You can start as big or as small as you'd like; say, a very small short-term goal could be trying a new recipe for breakfast tomorrow, a bigger one could be starting to upload Tiktoks on a daily basis. I'm still really worried about the future, it's not like I can turn off that part of my brain, but I've been trying hard to do small tasks every day. I've been baking more, getting better at cooking, doing a few workouts per week, watching tons of shows, playing games, it has helped to keep my mind a little more at ease instead of feeling super frustrated all the time. I make small checklists that are easier to accomplish (for instance: things to do this Sunday and stuff like that) and every little accomplishment feels good, especially if I compare it to an unreachable (at the moment) big goal for the future.

Love always,
Henry.

An Unequal Society vs the Coronavirus pandemic

an unequal society vs coronavirus pandemic
For the first time in-I don't know how many-centuries, we have the ability to save the world of a pandemic by staying home. Of course, those of us who are able to say home in these Coronavirus times should consider ourselves lucky (at least to some extent, I won't talk about how this is affecting my line of work here, I'll reserve that for a different post), but tons of people (especially marginalised parts of society) won't be able to stay home because they live on a day-by-day basis; some small businesses are on the verge of collapsing and, with no near end in sight, I feel like most of us will see a drastically different reality by the time it's considered prudent to leave our houses.

Our society works under the basis of capitalism, if we add the idea of a virus spreading, poor healthcare conditions and the already present inequality in it, the results are a little terrifying. Basically we'll be stuck with a system in which the richer will have access to the best medical resources and the working class and underprivileged fellows will suffer even more than they already do because, not only will they be sick, they'll also be unable to put food on the table. I've read somewhere that a situation like this serves as "an equalizer" because it affects every step of the hierarchy EQUALLY, without discriminating between rich and poor and it's true (in that little extent) but it's also false. The virus will not care about how much money you have in the bank but it definitely won't put everybody on the same boat. NOT A CHANCE.

The virus will impact heavily in politics, economics and healthcare, that's a given. In a country and society where class stratification plays a huge role in daily life, the consequences will worsen and the scariest part is that it's already happening: between people who don't really believe in the virus (upper and lower class tiers) and keep on going out, increasing the contagious rate; people who blame it all on the president (because we all need someone to blame, right?); casual racists and; unfair company owners... Things are looking pretty bleak at the moment.

If this virus acted like an equaliser, people wouldn't be forced to go to work, to crowd subway stations... We're about to see a harsher division between classes and if we stop fighting, it'll be impossible to change the current situation. So, next time you think about leaving your home for a non-life threatening situation, don't only think about sick people (although I'm sure irresponsible people don't event think about that), consider the impact you're generating in society and the contribution you're making to an awful new normality that will only divide classes even further.

Love always,
Henry.

Self Care: A practical non-clichéd guide

self care guide
Have you ever seen those posts on social media that say things like "to take better care of yourself, do the following: journal every day, meditate, take a deep breath..." and stuff like that? I'm sure you have... I don't think they're true, haha. I've yet to meet a person that's all zen like that and the few Internet girls I've seen talking about that seem fake AF, a very boring cliché. That said, I think self care is SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT OK? And just because I feel those things are clichéd and fake, doesn't mean that they're not true, they just don't work for me.

Let me tell you what it does (in a list because, well, organisation is important):

1. Read a good novel. Just because there are a million motivational books doesn't mean they're any great pieces of literature.

2. Binge-watch a good show. Animes and movies work fine as well. Just focus on their story for a while and, when you're done, think about the good things that you might add into your daily life. Hearing stories is good when you feel like yours is stuck.

3. Focus on yourself. Stop trying to save every single person out there because, spoiler alert, the only person you can save (most times) is yourself.

4. Pampering. Get that skincare routine in check, try on new outfits, do something different with your hair. Do it for yourself and not for others.

5. Internalise. Give yourself a good self-therapy session (yes, journal if you need to...). Think about the things you want to accomplish, make lists, set goals, download that cheesy organising app that you were curious about.

BONUS! Learn something new, anything, just learn something: a language, a recipe, try a new tea, figure out how to make yourself a drink, try a home workout routine. Seriously, just keep your mind busy.

Really hoping some of these tips help you out in times of need.
Remember: be your top priority, always.

Love,
Henry.

Love,
Henry.

Damaged and repaired (a guide on how to heal a broken heart)

How to heal a broken heart
In Japan, they have this tradition called kintsugi, or the art of broken pieces, it's a method of repairing broken objects with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver or platinum. The idea behind this technique is to acknowledge and celebrate an object's history but to visibly incorporate the repair instead of hiding it, resulting in a much more special piece and, if you ask me, that's a really beautiful thing to do. I believe our hearts could really benefit from some kintsugi, especially after they break.

Instead of carrying a damaged heart, we can celebrate having a repaired and improved one. The big question here is: how can we do that? How can we create our lacquer? To simply put this, our lacquer is knowledge and the gold, silver and platinum comes from personal experiences. In my own notes, having suffered from heartbreak a few times, I can honestly say that after all the anger, sadness and pain calms down, our brain can start to work in beautiful ways with the right stimuli and; since this is a guide on how to heal, I'll list the things that really helped me repair myself and incorporate the feelings I experienced into my life.

First things first: writing, documenting, talking about what happened is always a great idea; after that, I immersed myself in TV shows, movies, anime, books, tons of artistic and creative productions (and that, in turn, made me repeat the first step with new ideas in mind). Third step: personal care; I wanted to look good, to look better than before so, skincare, exercise, hair, clothes, all that helped me look better on the outside to feel better on the inside. Focus on yourself, celebrate your history, learn from your mistakes but stop concealing your emotions, your pain, keep those things visible so you know that they happened, because, damage doesn't have to be lethal and repairs don't have to hide your scars.

Love always,
Henry.

I Officiated A Wedding (no, for real)!!

I Officiated a wedding
You know how people have a bucket list and their main goal in life is to cross as many things as possible? Well, sometimes you do things that are really great and random that were never on your list like, say, marry a couple. Yes, guys, I officiated a wedding! Haha! I married two of my friends (in a non-religious ceremony, of course). It was a really weird but amazing experience, kind of like being on a TV show or a movie but bearing the huge responsibility to do things correctly and not screw up because, well, it's their wedding! Your friends are there (wearing a tux and a dress, nonetheless), their families, some other people you know... Oh, it was something, alright, haha.

The whole thing started when my friend Armando (who lives in China) told me that he was getting married to Xiaoqing and that he needed to ask something big from me. Turns out, they needed someone to marry them in English and Spanish (haha), someone who was good with words and that cared about the couple... Long story short, that was me. So, there I was, creating a script from scratch, trying to make the whole speech sound as current as possible (non-religious, grounded... I even thought there were some feminist and pro gender equality moments in there, haha), something that I would be proud of but also make them happy because it's their day, not anyone else's, haha.

In the end, even when I stumbled with some words and had to choreograph the whole thing (because Chinese traditions are quite different from the Mexican ones and they didn't know what to do), tons of people told me that I did a great job; the bride and groom were really pleased about it and I got compliments throughout the whole thing, I got the approval from both Chinese and Mexican guests, yay! I felt so flattered when they chose me to do that and it was something that I never thought of doing but that I can write and write off my bucket list, haha.

Love always,
Henry.

Dealing With Age Pressure

Age Pressure
I've received my fair share of ridiculous and dumb comments on social media and YouTube, but one of the more recent topics haters seem to particularly enjoy is my age (and they're not even that many  ugly comments, maybe 5 or 10 among every 1000, but yeah). They seem to think that I'm acting "too young" for my age, that I have some sort of Justin Bieber complex (ironically, I'm less than 6 months older than the Biebs), that I should "behave accordingly to my age" or that I shouldn't do or say certain things... It's so annoying.

I hate how the Internet world is obsessed with being young, how it's easy for people to forget that there's an actual person reading their comments on the other side of the screen, it creates pressure on me, age pressure. They have already made me hate growing older but; at the same time, it's a matter of perception, you know? I don't feel like I don't act or look my age (I think I look younger, actually, and most people seem to agree), and I completely fulfill my role as an adult when situations require it; I'm a grown up when I need to be one and I can also be a young guy because, well, I AM YOUNG.

So the only thing I have to say to them is SCREW YOU; I'm still young and have many many things ahead of me, I'll still have fun with my personal style, be funny, sweet and charming. I'll take that age pressure and turn it into fuel to entertain people, to make them have a good time... And if some Internet trolls don't like that about me, they can change the channel and go see someone else, that's the brilliance of social media and all its different platforms, there are hundreds creating content and, hopefully, they'll find something suitable for their (limited) intellect and personality traits, plus they're training me to be more clever with my comebacks without even knowing it, haha.

Love always,
Henry.

Do you need to plan ahead?

Do You Need To Plan Ahead
I used to make fun of my mom because she was always making lists for everything... But you know how, as you grow older, you start to become more and more like your parents? Well, now I can't seem to stop writing them down, hahaha, it's the only way to keep track of what I do and, also, a nice way of keeping my to-do list in check. I have lists on my phone, on notebooks, pretty much everywhere and, after a really good talk to a close friend, I realised that, even when they're incredibly useful, it's time to take my "list habits" to the next level.

I'm talking about planning ahead, creating a sort of calendar/schedule to make sure I'm achieving everything I need to (in time) and don't miss any due dates. I usually write everything on an open notebook: on the left side, I have an event calendar and; on the right, I have a check-list... But that hasn't been enough, not lately. I want to give this new planning idea a go, to write down everything I need to be posting, sharing, creating; the events, the shoots and recording days; write down ideas I get on the way and make sure everything is a lot more organised to maximise efficiency. So, if you ask me do I need to start planning ahead to keep my life in check, in order? The answer is YES, all the way.

Love always,
Henry.

Thank You! (featuring Paperless Post)

Thank You feat Paperless Post
Call me old-fashioned but I've always loved the idea of a good "Thank You" card; I feel like, at times, people put so much effort into what they do that a bit of recognition is needed. Whether you're the host of a party and want to thank the guests for coming (or the other way around) or you just feel like giving some love to those who support you, the tradition of a Thank You card is something that I wouldn't like to see disappearing.

But, of course, modern times call for modern solutions. Not many people send physical cards or letters nowadays and that's where Paperless Post comes in; it's a service that helps you create thank you cards, flyers, invitations, save the dates and all kinds of cards and make sure the recipients get them. If you're not good at designing, they have hundreds of templates to choose from and the cards come with a nice animation of an envelope opening to reveal its contents. Prices change depending on your design so you can go as simple or as complex as you want.

So, going back to the thank you part of this post, and I'm being honest here, when was the last time you took the time to write a note to someone you care about? I don't do it often enough and I wanna change that, it only takes a minute or two and it's a really nice thing to do, it makes you feel good and it brings a smile upon the recipients, guaranteed. Take a look below at a mock card I made for you, my dear reader, to thank you for being there all these years... And if you want to try and create your own, head to Paperless Post!

Thank You feat Paperless Post 2
Love always,
Henry.

I don't need anybody in my life who doesn't want to be there

I don't need Georgina
I might or might not be quoting season 1 of Gossip Girl... I honestly don't care because this message is powerful enough to endure the possible backlash. Recent events drove me towards choosing "cleanse" as May's theme; life works in mysterious ways and, somehow, has a way of putting two and two together, you know? People come and go, you let them in, sometimes they stay because they deserve to, sometimes they do because they force it. I've been dealing with the latter.

You're not meant to please everybody and 99% of the time, you should put yourself first, be your priority. Life has taught me that you can't save anybody and it's not your job to solve other people's lives. I've been realising, more so lately, that I have many people in my life that don't have my back, that constantly use and abuse me... I've been more outspoken about it in the past few weeks and I don't think they've been liking it too much; I can tell that they're pushing me away because I don't tell them what they want to hear and, you know what? That's fine.

I don't need anybody in my life who doesn't want to be there. I'm tired of spending energy and thoughts on unworthy folks: If you don't like me, don't like the way I handle things, then you're welcome to leave. I'm done with haters, with people hurting me when I'm only trying to be nice, I'm done, it's not happening anymore. Part of cleansing my life is acknowledging that I don't have room for everybody and if they're not going to be nice and positive, constructive or helpful, then they don't deserve to be here and, in some way, they don't really want to be here so, thanks for everything you taught me and goodbye...

Henry.

He's imperfect, but he tries...

He's imperfect, but he tries.
He's good, but he lies.
He's hard on himself.
He's broken and won't ask for help.

He's messy, but he's kind.
He's lonely most of the time.
He's all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie.
He's gone, but he used to be mine.

Last summer, while I was visiting my mom in Sacramento, I was drinking some tea and working from a Starbucks (because we didn't have home internet installed at the moment) and, for some reason, I paused the song I was listening to and heard some of the lines I wrote above in the voice of Sara Bareilles. I started tearing up because they made so much sense, I felt like they described some aspects of me and I couldn't help but feel them running through my soul. It's not simple to say but some days, I don't recognise me...

Digimon Adventure Tri

Digimon Adventure Tri poster sm
Digimon Adventure Tri reached its end a few days ago. I don’t know if you know this, but Digimon is really important to me, it was one of my favourite shows when I was little and a big influence in how I think and perceive the world (and I mean that). Digimon has been a source of inspiration to me and one of the ways I keep my imagination and inner child, both, alive. Three years ago, Digimon was revived and a sequel project (6 movies) began.

At first I couldn’t contain my excitement. I watched and rewatched the first movie, I even did an editorial inspired by the male characters (see that photo shoot here). I watched the second movie in Japan, the third in the US... No matter where I went, Digimon was always with me. Now that this project is over, I can’t help but feel sad. It’s amazing how many shows from my childhood are getting sequels but it’s always bittersweet to see them ending. Nostalgia is a powerful marketing tool, and maybe that’s why Digimon Tri or Dragon Ball Super are successful.

Just like its predecessor, Tri taught me many things. It’s amazing to see how characters from the show grow up, change, evolve, the same way I did. That’s one of the recurring themes in Digimon: growing up... And I related to so many of the characters and their struggles. Sure, there were a few plot holes and not completely baked ideas along the way but my heart just didn’t care, it was full, I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters (again) just yet. I heard that there’s a new related project in the works and I truly hope my wish for more Digimon comes true.

Love always,
Henry.

Nostalgia: Dragon Ball Super

So many shows have been getting sequels, remade, revivals, these past few years! And, although I respect the idea of letting an idea run its course, I can't help but feel happy about that, really freakin' happy. I wanna talk about one show that I watched when I was a kid: Dragon Ball Z (and yes, I know that it all began with Dragon Ball and Z was a sequel but Z was the first one I enjoyed, okay?).

Sometime around 2015, the official Dragon Ball Z sequel began airing, they called it Dragon Ball Super. I knew it existed but never really paid much attention to it. They released 2 movies that were expanded within the show, I knew about them but didn't watch them either. Well, a few months ago, my best friend came by and we watched an episode; then, 2 or 3 weeks go, I decided to watch the whole thing and, friends, it's been a great decision.

I'm halfway through the show now (it ended this past weekend) and now I see Dragon Ball and its characters with a whole new set of mind (let's face it, I was a lot less demanding when I was 11). I see the things that I love and the things that I really dislike, I appreciate character development and suffer with the filler episodes, haha. I know that Dragon Ball Super isn't perfect, I know that it appeals to people coming from a nostalgic place but I don't really care. It has given me a chance to "interact" with characters that helped me grow up and it feels, well, super.

Love always,
Henry.

The Duff

There are two movies that I always go to when I wanna laugh: Mean Girls and Easy A; they're clever, funny, quotable and, I don't know, I think they kind of defined my generation. It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, you probably know a line or two from those scripts. Well, I was browsing the Netflix catalogue this past week and found the third member of this Holy Trinity: The Duff.

At first, I thought it would be your average American romantic comedy but it's so much more than that. It ticks the three boxes I mention above: it's funny, clever and quotable. Basically, it tells the story of an average high school girl and how she realises that she's a D.U.F.F. (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). The rest of the movie is about changing (and sort of embracing) that. The leads are likeable, it's well paced, some supporting characters (like her mom and some teachers) are hilarious and, overall, it's a fun movie with a powerful message (that I won't tell you because you have to watch it).

Among this Holy Trinity of mine, The Duff ranks 3rd out of the three, but, that doesn't make it any less valuable. I couldn't stop watching and I think I'll have to watch it like two or three more times so I can fully understand and start quoting it, haha. Here's the trailer, give it a chance, you won't regret it!

Henry.

Loona

Ever since I came back from Korea, I've been into K-Pop. I don't know if it's a matter of nostalgia or if it's because I'm kind of tired of listening to "new" Western music that basically sounds the same as the thing that came before, but K-Pop has become a safe musical haven for me. And today I want to talk about Loona, a girl group that will debut later this year.

It's a 12 member group and, sure, that sounds impressive but it's sort of normal for Korean standards. The thing is, they've been doing this amazing pre-debut project featuring each girl with a solo music video, sub-units and incredible imagery; I think they've really raised the bar for the whole music industry. A few days ago, they released this group teaser and it's just so, so, so cool. I wanna do some sort of project inspired by it, so yeah, take a look at it and expect something cool (based on it) on my behalf to come soon!

Henry.

H&M Conscious: The recycling process

H&M The Recycling Process I went to an H&M event a few days ago and it was really cool because they taught me how their recycling process works. You can take clothes you no longer need to your local H&M store, put them in a bin in exchange for a discount coupon and give them new life. I've done that before and I knew they recycled it but I didn't quite know how they do it. Learning that was awesome and I want you to learn about that too, so, here are the different steps on H&M's recycling process:

H&M Recycling Step 1 H&M Recycling Step 2 H&M Recycling Step 3 H&M Recycling Step 4 H&M Recycling Step 5 Thanks to the H&M Conscious team for having me, I had a blast!

Honestly... I'm Bored

Honestly I'm Bored
I've been thinking about my fellow bloggers lately and how they use different strategies to grow their numbers in this social media era. One of them posted something about how a number doesn't define you and I sort of agree with him but I also disagree. Yes, we sometimes feel like having more followers makes us more important than others and I don't think that's true UNLESS you work in this industry where, sadly, having bigger numbers means getting better opportunities, an industry where the focus isn't so much on the quality as much as it is on the quantity.

I like to think that my content is good, that I put effort into writing and editing and everything. During the past couple of weeks, I've noticed how I can see 20 different outfits from 20 different bloggers and, apart from two or three, don't see much difference, I don't see drive or some sort of quality content. They just do the same pose, in the same places, with the same "sock ankle boots", irrelevant captions and honestly... I'm bored.

That's why I've been trying to do different things when it comes to creating content. Small things, like, different poses, different styling ideas, different boomerangs for Instagram. I know that having a certain number of followers will not define what I do or what I am but if I ever get to the big leagues, I want to make sure that I'm not blending in but standing out, so when I do grow my numbers, I'll feel like I'm giving something to the world instead of being just another *tap tap like*.

Me aburren.

Love always,
Henry.

Ginger Beer Tea Recipe

ginger tea recipe receta
I love cooking and rarely get the chance to share that with you so, for this post, I want to give you a really cool recipe for a drink that will be your new best friend when you feel under the weather, when you're sick with a cold or when you want to get your voice back after a party or something like that. I call it ginger beer tea

Here's what you'll need:

- Water (1 cup)
- Fresh peeled and minced ginger (1 teaspoon)
- Lemon juice (1 lemon)
- Add honey or Stevia to taste

Peel the ginger and mince it using a grater, put that in a cup. Add the lemon juice and let the ginger soak in it for a minute or two. You can either boil the water or heat it up in the microwave. Add the ginger-lemon mix to the hot water and stir, sweeten it up with honey or Stevia (I prefer the latter). Drink it while it's hot; it's delicious and, most importantly, efficient when it comes to helping out with a cold or when you want a boost of energy!

// Aquí está lo que van a necesitar:

- Agua (una taza)
- Jengibre fresco, pelado y rallado (1 cucharadita)

Hope you'll love it!
Henry.
