I'm in my 20s and still single...

Wisdom #67 single and in my 20s
When I tell people that I'm in my 20s and haven't had a serious relationship they always seemed so shocked. It's not that I don't wanna date, because I think it would be nice, it's just that somehow things don't work out well for me. I'm a different kind of guy, I'm not very manly, I take care of myself with beauty products, I'm into fashion... I know what you might thinking: he's gay, but that's the thing, I'm not and it sucks.

Every time I try to flirt with girls or act on my romantic feelings I get friendzoned... I get hit on by guys almost all the time and, sure, I'm flattered, but it's not my thing, it's not what I want. I know I won't ever be a chick magnet, it's not on my DNA but, you know, sometimes I wish I was more normal. I think being this unexperienced when it comes to love isn't a good thing, and people usually say 2 things to me: the first one comes from my haters who swear that one day I'll come out of the closet and admit being gay (which is really stupid but, hey, haters) and the second comes from the people who seem to care about me, saying that I shouldn't worry, that I'll meet the right girl eventually... Still I don't know when that will happen, when I'm 40?

Anyhow, I've learned to cope with that (mostly) and I'm kind of okay with being single, I've always been a lone wolf, so, in some sense, I'm starting to think that I'll remain like this and, before you say anything like "oh, you're exaggerating", I want to say that I'm okay with this; I'd rather be alone than being someone/something that I'm not. Just because people say or assume things about you doesn't mean that they're right, you know who you are and as long as you're fine with that, you're good to go.

Love always,
Henry.

2. Rock band graphic t-shirt, from H&M.

4. Suede Chelsea boots in black, from Frank Wright.
5. Maple leaf pin, from H&M.
6. Rings, also from H&M.
Balance 3
Lately, I've been feeling funny, not in a good way, not in a sick-I'm dying kind of way either. My sleeping schedule has been really messed up: going to bed at 5 am, waking up at noon, it's just awful. I know I'm always saying stuff about being a vampire but I think this schedule is starting to become a problem because I'm tired all the time. Thinking about it, maybe the reason behind this mess is my lack of balance, I procrastinate too much so I feel like I'm falling behind when it comes to work and my other activities.

Balancing life is about organisation and efficiency; I know, in my gut, that I can do it all, it's not that I don't trust what I do or how capable I am, it's just that I'm way too disorganised and unbalanced that I can't seem to think straight and get my priorities in order. Instead of editing photos, I'm watching movies, instead of working out and eating healthy, I'm eating junk and being a couch potato. I remember when I first started this blog, I used to wake up at 5 am, go to Uni, snap photos, go to my part-time job, go to events, come back home, write posts for the blog and do my homework, I was so efficient back then because I was able to find balance between everything I did.

I think it's time to sit down, reflect and think about strategies that will help me overcome this problem. I can't go back to who I was back then but I know that I can be better than who I am today. It's about finding my center, my balance.

Thank You! (featuring Paperless Post)

Thank You feat Paperless Post
Call me old-fashioned but I've always loved the idea of a good "Thank You" card; I feel like, at times, people put so much effort into what they do that a bit of recognition is needed. Whether you're the host of a party and want to thank the guests for coming (or the other way around) or you just feel like giving some love to those who support you, the tradition of a Thank You card is something that I wouldn't like to see disappearing.

But, of course, modern times call for modern solutions. Not many people send physical cards or letters nowadays and that's where Paperless Post comes in; it's a service that helps you create thank you cards, flyers, invitations, save the dates and all kinds of cards and make sure the recipients get them. If you're not good at designing, they have hundreds of templates to choose from and the cards come with a nice animation of an envelope opening to reveal its contents. Prices change depending on your design so you can go as simple or as complex as you want.

So, going back to the thank you part of this post, and I'm being honest here, when was the last time you took the time to write a note to someone you care about? I don't do it often enough and I wanna change that, it only takes a minute or two and it's a really nice thing to do, it makes you feel good and it brings a smile upon the recipients, guaranteed. Take a look below at a mock card I made for you, my dear reader, to thank you for being there all these years... And if you want to try and create your own, head to Paperless Post!

4. Jamming sneakers in white, from Puma.
5. Rings, from H&M.

I've always been waiting, for as long as I can remember, walking through life without a clear purpose, just expecting something great to present itself, and I don't mean like "wanting something handed to me", I want just a tease, a spark, something that tells me what path to follow and allows me to find some meaning to what I do. I work hard, I know I do, but what's the value of it if all the boomerangs I throw never seem to come back to me?

When I was in elementary school, my goal was to have the best grades (that idea stuck with me for my whole student life); around middle school, I wanted to be cool and popular (that never really happened); in high school, I wanted to have many friends and be an alpha, a leader (I sort of accomplished that); by the time I got to Uni, all I wanted was to find true friends, be successful, go abroad... And I sort of did that, although not according to my original plan, I managed to find good friends, be good at school, be recognised and study in Korea.

Now that I don't have school, I've focused all my energy and time in being a great blogger and YouTuber and I really believe I'm good at what I do, but, success isn't really happening for me, I think it's because the right time hasn't happened yet... BUT, I'm reaching this moment where I feel like I can start channeling what I do into something and explore new areas, step out of my comfort zone (in my case, said comfort zone is working non-stop and convincing myself that I'm amazing at what I do), and really start becoming what I feel like I can become. Sometimes we're stuck without even realising it and, you know what? Right now feels like the right time to do something about that.

A Strange Time To Feel Sad

Wisdom #66 A Strange time to feel sad
It was the beginning of summer, a strange time to feel sad, right? And yet, I was... In some sense, I guess I always feel a little sad, that feeling has become attached to me and I don't think it's going away, ever. People usually get quite excited for summer, I think it's because we were taught, as kids, that summer marks the ending of something and the beginning of a well-deserved break... I haven't had a break in years.

Doing what I do means control of my own time, I don't do office hours, but it also means working every single day, even Christmas and birthdays. I share so many things with the world through this blog, social media, YouTube, and sometimes I feel like if I don't put on a happy face, people will not respond to my content but, still, I try to show a little bit of the bad times, the sad moments, it just makes me feel better, more real. So, yeah, I've been happy on a rainy day and I've also been sad at the beginning of summer but, as long as I feel like I can keep on going, I guess it's okay to be this way.

Love always,
Henry.

4. Rings, from H&M.
Fuel The Fire 3
I try to push myself and do better as much as possible; I hate mediocrity and people who don't do things with passion, who coast along through life based on their good looks or their money, maybe it's because I wasn't born with any of those that I can't afford to be that way. When you're not rich or handsome, you need to work harder and be the best, aim for the biggest goals and, again, push yourself and be above average.

I thought a lot about something today and it has to do with feeling like you still have something to say, something to accomplish, about not giving up, no matter how gloom the view is; when you feel like there's nothing left worth fighting for, no more fire to fuel, that's when you give up, but not before. If you feel like there's still things you want to do, you need to fuel that desire and start making it a reality, going after your dreams; as long as we have dreams, we have strength and motivation. Tons of times, I've felt defeated and compared my success (or lack of) with others' and that's not healthy, that's not a way to improve; it's in those days that I remind myself that I'm capable of more, of doing a great job, and that my chance to shine will come eventually.

I've always had fire in my eyes because I constantly think that there's so much more for me to do, that my dreams have not come true yet and that, since I don't have certain privileges, it's up to me to reach out and grab the opportunities that come in handy. That fire needs to be fuelled constantly because sometimes I let myself be beaten down and forget that I'm more capable than I think... And that's when I remember that if you're going through hell, you need to keep going, you can't let your fire be extinguished by others: your turn will come, sooner or later.

Good Girls

I haven't laughed so much watching a drama show since Desperate Housewives was airing almost a decade ago, Good Girls is that good, haha. I recently binge watched (sort of) the entire first season in three days and I can't wait for the second one; it tells the story of three mothers living in the suburbs, how desperate for money they are, and this isn't a real spoiler, how they rob a supermarket where gangsters were laundering money and, finally, how that changes their lives for good.

The three leads are completely different women with powerful stories: Beth, played by Christina Hendricks, is very housewife-y but a killer liar; Ruby (played by Retta) has a daughter who needs a kidney transplant but that doesn't make her sappy and sad, she's actually the funniest of the trio and; lastly, Annie (Mae Whitman), a young mom who's very annoying, is always screwing things up but (as much as I dislike her) she's one of those crucial characters in the show. Good Girls is fun when you least expect it, it made me excited, made me cry and, overall, is juicy enough to keep you wanting more. Netflix released it globally earlier this month and, trust me, it's one of the best things I've watched this year.

3. Suede Chelsea boots in gray, from Frank Wright.
4. Glasses, from Asos.
5. Rings, from H&M.

I'm very permissive when it comes to my friends; for some reason, I don't like to upset people and I tend to go along quite easily with what they want... That is, of course, as long as it doesn't affect me. I'm that friend who will always be there for you, in one way or another, that will come up with plans (no matter the activity) just to hang out with you; I'll help as much as I can and I'm allowed, that's just the kind of friend I am.

BUT, and this is important, I will not allow abuse, I will not let you step all over me and I will not accept rudeness. I talked about this in the past, it's important to put limits, otherwise, you're just a mat for people and no one wants to be that. I've had my fair share of nasty people and bad friends, I've cut people from my life and dealt with them being salty about it. That's fine, really; the moment you start being rude and mean to me, I will be polite when needed but, you're basically dead on my book.

Now here comes the story: what happens when your friends want to do something that bores you or something that you have no interest in doing? You need to start saying no and removing yourself from the situation, if you don't, then you'll be stuck at places where you don't want to be, wasting your time, and that is not okay. It's not okay if you feel forced to say yes just to be nice and it's definitely not okay to invest your time in stuff that won't pay back in the future. Next time your friend asks you to go to a museum or to a crappy club, if you don't want to go, say so, you're entitled to control your time and do the things you like.

Dare to defy

Wisdom #65 Dare to defy
It's not easy to be a guy inside the fashion/entertainment industry, especially when you're not gay. People are constantly raining on your parade, telling you the things that they don't like, the ones you do wrong... They all assume you're gay because 8 or 9 out of every 10 guys are, they assume you're gay because you take care of your hair, your skin, because you take risks with your style choices, so... You end up getting bullied for being gay when you're not even gay, and that sucks.

One of the things I've learned through the years is that I have to live with that, I know that I'm not manly enough for today's society, I know that some of my choices are not the standard for guys but, you know what? If I have to choose (and I clearly have to) between looking how "a straight guy should look" or looking the way I wanna look (even with all the bullying, assumptions and comments), I'll always choose to be in control of how I look. So, if you wanna dress a certain way, put on makeup or play with accessories, go ahead! Screw what everyone else thinks, dare to defy and be true to who you are.

Love always,
Henry.

July: Stories

July Stories Life's one big story...

You're in charge of the narrative, never forget that. I wanted to open this letter with a hard fact, one that we tend to forget from time to time. We read fiction novels, or at least I do, because they're a way of transporting myself to a different world, to live a different life, even if the feeling only lasts a few hours; we watch movies roughly because of that too and I think we don't always know how to tell the stories we want the world to hear... Being good with words is a gift, not everyone can do it in the same efficient way but I believe we all have a story (or several stories) to tell.

July's theme is focused on that, the stories that we tell, the ones we have to tell, the ones we need to tell and, also, the ones we avoid to tell. In this social media era, it seems like everyone is talking about something, sharing moments, creating a narrative (especially on Instagram, where you can actually upload daily stories), and sure, it looks appealing because that's what we've been teaching each other for the past few years, that every story we upload and share has to be good, has to feel perfect... Heck, there's people out there (even some colleagues of mine) whose sole purpose is create jealousy amongst their followers so they want to be like them.

During the month, I want to talk about online stories but also offline ones; I wanna try and help you (if you're reading this) to control your narrative or regain said control. I'll share some stories of mine, of people I know, real and fiction, it'll all converge here. I think this is going to be an exciting month and I'm truly loving this theme so far, I hope you do too. It's time to get in touch with our inner narrator and be the star of our story, let's do this, best friends! As usual, you can catch this month's playlist by clicking here, I'm sure you'll like it!

Love,
Firma Hen Evia 200
