A letter against fear

Against Fear
Life goes by so fast! And it sucks that you can't slow it down. I know I've always been a bit of a Peter Pan kind of guy, I remember I used to tell my mom that I never wanted to grow up, that I wanted to be a kid forever. Now, I would be okay with just not growing past 25 (which means I still have room for one more year) and this isn't because I'm afraid of being old, that's not it... I'm afraid of all the things that soon I'm gonna be too old to do, afraid of the things I didn't do when I was younger, afraid I'm running out of time to accomplish my goals and dreams.

Unfortunately, certain things have an expiration date and just like I won't be able to know how it feels to have a high school sweetheart or what's it like to be a young popstar, I know that some experiences are slipping through my fingers... So here's what I have to say to the world: DO EVERYTHING, every single thing, don't miss out, don't be afraid. Speak your mind, confess your feelings, take a risk.

I've been afraid of so many things and wasn't even aware of that until now. Fear paralises people, we make it a huge obstacle in life and for what? It's okay to be cautious but, by no means, it's okay to be afraid of things. People come and go, situations shift all the time and unless we stop playing it safe, we'll never be able to truly enjoy life, to unravel our full potential. I want to use this sort of letter as a reminder, a way to remember that fear can't take control of our lives, that we must be strong and brave. That we can achieve our goals and dreams, no matter how difficult they seem.

Love always,
Henry.

YouTube Monthly Recap: August

Hey there guys! I hope you're having an amazing time. August came and went and so did my birthday, haha. This is always a difficult month for me but I tried to came up with great ideas for my blog and YouTube channel and, overall, I think it was a pretty good month, you be the judge.

During this month, I resurrected the videos featuring my monthly favourites; I went to the summer sales and bought a bunch of cool things; gave you some tips for school and; finally, talked about time and how it affects us all, in partnership with Daniel Wellington. Now's the perfect moment to catch up and see all the videos from August!

// ¡Hola amigos!

Don't forget to subscribe! See you next month!

About birthdays

Wisdom #11 Birthdays
I said this before, maybe one to many times, but I'm going to say it again: August is generally a difficult month for me because of my birthday, it makes me feel old and way behind on my goals and dreams but that feeling goes away a couple of times during these 31 days. Firstly, when it's my actual birthday and, secondly, when it's time to celebrate it.

I don't know if this happens to you but on the day of my actual birthday (a day that I share with my sister because we have our birthday on the same day) I'm actually really busy by planning the celebration and by receiving calls and messages from my loved ones. So, if I have to choose the best moment in August for me, it's my birthday, emphasising the day.

I hope you're familiar with Desperate Housewives and the character of Bree Van de Kamp, because I become Bree during my birthday celebrations, I get so stressed because I want everything to be perfect that I forget about all of the other struggles and negative thoughts that I have during the rest of the month. But hey, it's still one of my favourite days of the year and a certain moment comes around the end of it where I can savour my achievements and just hang out and be happy (:

Love always,
Henry.

We're supposed to grow wiser and older every year, to figure out a bit more about how life works and, generally, understand ourselves better. Time works in mysterious ways, you know? One particular moment or situation can teach you more things than a whole period of school; you start realising that maybe learning how to solve equations isn't as important as learning how to pay your taxes or how to give someone the right advice to overcome a problem.

Time flows differently for every single one of us because we grow up and find that we have different priorities, different paths to walk on, some shorter, some more difficult but; the one thing that makes us come together is the idea of memories. Maybe we won't be able to remember what one teacher from high school said but we will remember that our bests friends from that time were in the class with us. Memories are powerful and they're the glue that ties us together.

This post was made in collaboration with Momo Design, a brand that was born in the 80s by creating car accessories, working closely with Formula 1. Momo Design evolved and, eventually, started its own line of menswear apparel, with watches, bags and fragrances added to the mix. I think that the memories of its upbringing are what makes the brand like it is nowadays. Memories are brief moments that we freeze in time, they shape us and they make us who we are today. Let us never forget that.

Book Club #25: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Hey guys! As many of you know (and all of you should by now), I run an online book club here on the blog; the main goal is to find cool novels to share with you and, also, to prove a point that you can be into fashion and read more than magazines. Today's entry is a really peculiar one, written from a perspective that I haven't heard before. Book Club #25 is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon.

// ¡Hola amigos! El Book Club #25 es The Curious Inicident of the Dog in the Night-Time, de Mark Haddon.
Book Club The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
There are many things in this world that I don't understand... It's impossible to truly grasp a situation from a distance, you need to immerse into it and analyse it from within. One of my favourite metaphors is that, in order to change the course of a hurricane, you need to be in the eye of it. Mark Haddon does that on this novel: he puts on the shoes of an autistic boy and shares his views on a life that most of us would deem ordinary but, for him, is a daily battle.

Christopher, the main character, is an incredibly smart young man; he knows a million different geographical facts and he's a math genius; however, he can't understand human emotion, he's not good with people and avoids physical contact with everyone. On a regular day, his neighbour's dog is killed and he sets his sights on solving the mystery, Sherlock Holmes-style, unfolding many other riddles from his life, that he's unaware of, on the way.

This book is different from everything I've read before because of how it's written. Yes, there's nothing new in having a teenage boy as a POV character but his perspective, as autistic, is the added value. Whenever he feels stressed, scared or confident you feel that way too. Many times I felt frustrated and annoyed while reading this but I think that's how the author wants you to feel, he wants you to feel the struggle of being autistic and that's what makes this novel worth reading.

If you're willing to give this book a go, head over to Book Depository and buy it, along with more titles from Mark Haddon.

Love always,
Henry.

Life is filled with challenges, with responsibilities and choices waiting to be made. We spend a lot of time thinking about the things we'll do in the future, plans, goals, dreams... But most of the times, certain conditions appear and aid or harm our strategy. It's hard to make all the decisions by ourselves and I think that's why people tend to look for signs to reassure themselves about making the right choices.

I don't believe in God but I believe in energy and I do think destiny exists, although not as a set in stone future; destiny exists in the sense of perception, like when you feel you're on your way to achieving something great. That's why we "feel it in the air" when big things are coming up and because of that, it's crucial that we learn how to be captains of our ships, how to take control of our lives.

Like I said on this month's letter from the editor, August is stressful for me, with my birthday coming up in a few days, I keep questioning what am I doing with my life and what have I achieved in the past year. But one big decision I made this month was taking control of what I do, becoming the captain of my ship. I no longer want to wait for others to tell me what to do, it's about damn time for me to go out there and grab what I deserve.

An honest review: Huawei P9

Huawei P9 honest review
Huawei P9 honest review 4 Huawei P9 honest review 2
Hey everyone! If you follow me on social media, especially on Instagram (and honestly, if you don't, what the heck are you doing with your life?), you probably noticed that I've been posting photos taken with a Huawei P9 (also, if you don't know what Huawei is, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?), I've had it for maybe two months and I think it's a good idea to write an honest review about it.

So, without further ado, I'm going to start with pros: the Leica camera (it has two lenses) within is really good, not as good as my Nikon camera but really good indeed, it works especially well with low light settings (which are a pain) and it has a beauty filter included (which is AMAZING), it makes you look better, you know, bigger and brighter eyes, smooth skin, la la la, but it's really natural, not like one of those Japanese photo booths, haha. Plus, to unlock it, you use your fingerprint to touch a sensor in the back, which is pretty great.

I've been using it a lot and I bring it with me to events and parties; I love that I don't have to bring my camera with me anymore, because the Huawei P9 is way smaller and the results look really good on social media platforms and phone screens. Moving onto the cons, and I'm being honest here, it heats up a lot, the battery doesn't last as long as they promise (it lasts as much as an iPhone), the photos don't look amazing on a computer screen and, this is probably a really personal matter, I can't stand Android, it's too complicated, haha. Other than that, the Huawei P9 has been a really useful asset, so I recommend it if you're a photographer, blogger, if you travel a lot or if you love catching moments with great quality and with a pocket size camera.

One of the most frequently asked questions I get as a blogger is: How would you describe your personal style? or maybe What's the key item(s) in your wardrobe? And those aren't that easy to answer, especially the first one. I like think that I'm an ordinary guy, you know, nothing too extravagant but when I look around me, I notice that I'm not your average Joe (but I'm not too crazy either, luckily).

If I had to describe my personal style, I'd say that it depends on my mood. I think all of my outfits are quite cohesive with each other; it's hard to see something that really stands out of place and that's what personal style means to me, it's about telling stories, chapters from the same book. They don't have to be cookie-cutter perfect but if you were to look at them from afar, it's important that they maintain a certain vibe. That's how you can be preppy one day and a rockstar the next; as long as your outfits make sense and you still look like you, then it's all fair game.

Moving onto the second question, I think that's a bit easier. The key items in my wardrobe are, definitely, black super skinny jeans, a good pair of combat boots, cool sneakers, chunky sweaters and biker jackets (with some rings and necklaces added to the mix); and the outfit from these photos is one of my favourite combos: chunky sweater, super skinny jeans, boots and rings. I think it's one of my uniforms, haha. I just know that I'm gonna feel great in it and that it represents who I am, ordinary or not.

Maybe I won't get to paradise...

Wisdom #10 It gets worse before it gets better Life puts out a set of challenges for us and sometimes they're easy but, mostly, they're hard and makes us feel like there's no way out. It's common to think that our struggles are the most important thing in the world, we forget about world hunger and war to focus on ourselves and what troubles us... And that's okay, it's not selfish and it's about self-love.

Things tend to get worse before they get better, something I bet we've all heard before and it's sort of true; when you're at the bottom of the abyss, every single thing that makes you feel lifted is a positive. When things are horrible, the smallest act of kindness becomes a huge deal and; no matter how difficult things get, there's always a brighter version of a situation, maybe not a complete turnaround and a grand victory but, definitely, a better state of mind.

I've had two big love stories in my life, quite similar to each other. I fell in love with both girls (not at the same time) for years and years only to have my heart broken again and again. Some days I think that nothing is going to work out for me, that my romantic life is doomed but, every now and then,  tiny signs remind me that I don't need to achieve a fairytale romance; that there is hope. Maybe I won't get to paradise but the road to it can also be quite nice.

Love always,
Henry.

Let's take a little trip down memory lane... When I was in high school I used to think it was really funny to mock people, especially since I was at a really big and diverse public school, plus I was a huge snob. But yeah, I always had something to say about everyone and, quite frankly, I was super funny, haha, although that's beside the point right now...

Luckily, I outgrew that stage and learned to respect people a bit more (with the occasional mocking moment every now and then) and I'm glad I did because that allowed me to learn a bit from every single person I meet... This takes us to the special story from the past: back in high school I remember making fun of this girl who had a huge septum ring, I thought it was atroucious and yet here we are, six years later, with me wearing a fake one.

And, of course, I look much better than she did back in the day and yes, I nicknamed her "bull-girl" but the main lesson here is that those are only things we said; we change, we grow up and evolve and fashion is here to be fun and to help us express ourselves without having to speak a lot; so, as long as you're consistent and true to yourself, it's okay to go ahead and try new things: have a good time with clothes and accessories, I mean, we have to wear something anyways, right?

Still Trying To Figure Things Out

Life Journal 48
Nothing's ever perfect. Chasing that ideal is incredibly difficult and frustrating, I've learned that the hard way. For most of my life, I've been a perfectionist, I like winning and I like feeling proud of my accomplishments but; life has taught me that, sometimes, you can't have it all; that sometimes, things are beyond your reach and no matter how hard you work for perfection, it's unachievable.

I think I've always moved at a slower pace, I think I'm mature and everything but I also feel like I'm compensating for things I wasn't able to when I was younger; I'm still trying to figure things out and, by no means, I'm close to the finish line... I don't know if that's okay but I still haven't found what I'm looking for nor the motivation to turn things around. Maybe that's why I'm looking for a fresh start, perhaps a change of scenery will make me realise which direction is best for me to follow. I'm still trying to figure things out...

Love always,
Henry.

Set In Stone 7
Very few things in life are permanent. Think about it: you start as a kid, living with your parents, going to school, playing with friends, passing exams... All of the sudden, you're a teenager and the world looks and feels different than before: now you have to worry about gracefully overcoming puberty, looking good, school, friends, girlfriends, passing exams, growing taller... And life goes on and on, transforming.

Life is filled with change. Things that were important a couple years ago, don't interest you anymore. People come and go and nothing is set in stone. Like I said, very few things in life are permanent; I think it's important to acknowledge that flexibility is a big part of us and that we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves because, guess what, life progresses, new challenges and priorities will arrive.

So, as much as today feels like forever, remember that it's not. Yesterday's mistakes stay in the past (most of them, anyways) and we must see every new day as sort of a blank canvas, nothing is set in stone and it's up to us to change the things we don't like about our lives, no one is going to that for us. Follow my advice and start letting go of old burdens, treasure your battle scars but be prepared to move on...
