Stylish Dudes: Charlie Vandenburg

For the last couple of months I've been interviewing some cool guys and sharing their thoughts on life and fashion within the Stylish Dudes section. Last month, the interviewee was Moldovan badass blogger Mike Motsok (whose blog shares his name) from Mike Motsok. This month, I interviewed Charlie 'Charlieo' Vandenburg, a 60's soul without a blog trapped in modern UK. Enjoy.

Tell me a little bit about yourself:

I'm Charlie from South Yorkshire. I went to Leeds University and now I live in Manchester. My age is not known.

Describe an average day of your life:

I get up, listen to some 60's music and decide what to wear. Sometimes I surf the internet, or go for a walk if I have time.

What are you really passionate about?

I'm passionate about feelings and emotions and the arts in general (film, music, literature).
How do you feel about blogging?

I'm not that into it to be honest. I do LookBook but do not actually have a blog. I'd enjoy it but just would not have the time to do a lookbook, plus a blog and a Tumblr, etc.

When did you become invested in fashion, how was that process?

Erm... Not sure. As long as I can remember, I really cannot stand the times we live in, I feel alienated. I connect so much more with older cultures and vibes and so it is almost like escapism dressing like you are from a different time with vintage clothes.

Who would you consider a stylish dude and why?

Erm... Anyone from the 60's or 50's, Andy Warhol, maybe? In terms of modern styles, I think the band 'The Drums' and 'The Horrors' are really cool. In terms of bloggers, I think Oscar Robertson is really cool and Violet El.

Your looks are always amazing, they have a cool rock & roll vibe. What's the fashion/arts scene for guys under 21 in the UK?

I am not a part of it, as I am not under 21... But it is really not good. Guys have these awful mustaches, and beanie hats and wear Vans trainers. Just awful.
You have the coolest jumpers! Is there any particular story about them that you remember/treasure?

Ermmm... I just buy them over time from vintage shops or eBay... There is one with foxes on that people love.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What will you be doing?

No idea... Hopefully this girl from Leamington Spa.
When you're feeling pressured or overwhelmed, what activity helps you re-find your center?

Ermmm... not sure. I tend just to go for a walk, or watch a random video on YouTube to take my mind off things.

What are some of your favourite books, TV series, musicians and other artists?

Fav actors are Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Gregory Peck, I am also a fan of Jack Kerouac and Sylvia Plath.

What would you say to someone seeking general fashion advice?

Ermmm, just do what coms naturally, if it feels right then wear it.

Thank you Charlie! If you want to know more about this amazing guy, be sure to see him on LookBook.nu and give him a like on Facebook.

I love you Jenny Humphrey.

I love you Jenny Humphrey
I love you Jenny Humphrey 2
I'm wearing:

1. Patterned jacket, Maison Martin Margiela for H&M.
2. Striped t-shirt, from Zara.
3. Panelled super skinny jeans, from H&M.
4. Trompe l'oeil hi-top sneakers in red, Maison Martin Margiela for H&M.
5. Rings, from Asos.
I love you Jenny Humphrey 3
After I talked about how much I love Blair Waldorf, I started to realize that another great, great teenage girl from Gossip Girl was Jenny Humphrey. That means Serena is boring as hell. Or at least not as complex as Jenny or Blair. They both work for what they want, they don't give up and; even when Jenny turned kinda goth and weird, I still loved her. Taylor Momsen being really pretty doesn't hurt either. Who doesn't love a bad girl like her? Maybe Mother Theresa or the PTA but yeah, they're not me.

Jenny Humphrey was this little sweet girl from Brooklyn with big dreams of becoming socially graceful, a successful fashion designer and live the Upper East Side dream. She eventually did it and lost herself in the process, regain her mojo, lost it again... And the same thing over and over again but learning tons of new stuff every time. Jenny was very interesting and it's a shame that she left Gossip Girl on season 4. But who knows? Maybe by re-watching the first two seasons (thing that I'm NOT doing, really, there's no season 2 playing on my DVD right now) everyone could appreciate how great she truly was.

Talking about the outfit, and I said this several times before, I loved Maison Martin Margiela for H&M and these shoes are one of my favourite things ever. I also loved the jacket with the dropped shoulder and those jeans are my new everyday, comfort, love jeans. The rings are a blessing from heaven. It's really hard to get cool accessories.

I love you like Taylor Momsen loves her black eyeliner,

American Eagle: Opening Party Perisur

Have you ever seen one of those "BREAKING NEWS" segments on TV? Well, my Greatest Teenage Girls tribute has been invaded by one of those. BREAKING NEWS: The eagle has landed. Yes, I mean American Eagle. The all-American clothing store arrived in Mexico and they held an opening party yesterday.

I went with my usual companion and best friend Sand (pictured above in the black dress) and fellow blogger Queta, from Two Fashion Strikes. The party was intense, it was really crowded but it was fun. The food was good, hehe.

Among many surprises (like a gift card for me), Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars appeared on the blue carpet. I still don't know why she was there but, I mean, look at her, she's really beautiful and seems nice, I didn't really talk to her, just introduced myself and that was it. Well, that and like 5 minutes of drooling while watching her.

The Perisur store is HUGE. Like, really, really big. The girls' section is quite bigger than the guys (like in almost every other store, ever, sadly) and it has some cool pieces, the shirts were a standout for me, especially the denim ones. The layout for the accessories was quite cool as well. Overall, the clothing has a very girly vibe with an edge.

The guys section was very interesting because it could seem like there's two different targets: the surfer dude and the city guy. But, somewhere between hangers, the two stories collide and create a cool hybrid. I very much liked that since I can have quite a little bit of both profiles (and many more) and I wouldn't like a limited range of options. So kudos to that!

Hope you enjoyed this, we now return you to your regularly schedule programming,
Hen.

I love you Blair Waldorf

I'm wearing:

1. Oversized pea coat, Maison Martin Margiela for H&M.
2. White shirt with grey sleeves and collar, from H&M.
3. Black super skinny jeans, from Asos.
4. Gray suede desert boots, from Pull & Bear.
5. Watch-frame necklace used as a tie, Maison Martin Margiela for H&M.
Cheating, drinking, drugs. It's all fair game.
In case you haven't read, February is a month dedicated to the Greatest Teenage Girls (real or fictional), and this one is pretty iconic, not only for her fashion sense but also for her charming and deep personality. That's why I love you: Blair Waldorf.

Let's time-travel back to 2007, the year Gossip Girl was born. I've never been exposed to a show like that (obviously I didn't ever care for the O.C) and it was the first time I saw a character like Blair Waldorf. She was incredibly cool, her outfits were amazing and she made me realize how much I want to marry (or at least be the boyfriend of) a preppy girl who wears coloured tights and headbands.

Blair was a conquerer, a romantic and a drama queen. But she was also loyal, layered, intense and complex. I've always felt like I could relate to her and her choices, I truly understood her; except when it came to Chuck Bass (I completely feel like her relationship with him and college were the two factors that ruined the show, but that's another day's talk). Blair was, beyond everything else, intelligent, passionate and a dreamer. She fought for everything she had and, I believe, will be the most remembered character of Gossip Girl. Blair Waldorf, thank you for defining my generation.

My friend Mara wanted to do a shoot in this really beautiful building and the outfit idea was formal but with my own twist. I love, love, love my oversized pea coat and the watch-frame used as a tie. I think I did a good job capturing an Upper East Side scent and a little preppy vibe from Blair.

XOXO (hehe),
Hen.

I love you Holly J. Sinclair

I'm wearing:

1. Fusion of two coats, from Maison Martin Margiela X H&M.
2. Ombré dyed gray t-shirt, from H&M.
3. Black super skinny jeans, from Asos.
4. Dale ox blood milled leather lace up boots, from Frank Wright.
5. Tribal necklace, from Asos.
Holly J. Sinclair is one of those jewels from TV that you might have never heard of. She was a main cast member on Degrassi (from season 7 to season 11) and it's my all-time favourite character (along with the Coyne twins). Not only Charlotte Arnold did a fantastic acting job with Holly J., the writers really knew how to make a super complex character.

Holly J. started as a bitchy rich girl who bullied tons of people. She lost her money, was held at gunpoint and, somewhere between all that craziness, found the light and grew up. She was still a bitch, but it was kinda like the Head Bitch In Charge of everything. She started her own business, was class president, got kidney failure, found out she was adopted and still went to Yale to pursue her dreams.

Thank you Holly J. for setting the standard for a realistic high school over achiever with a mean but sensitive side. I love you not only because you're a read head but because in real life you (Charlotte Arnold) are a smart, cool and pretty girl. So, yeah, she's definitely a girl I'd love to be on a relationship with, hehe. And here's a video that may help you understand my crush.

Moving onto my outfit choice, I decided to wear this coat because it is constructed in two different fabrics and, from the side, one half looks way different than the other, even the buttons and pockets are different. I really loved the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection for its quirkiness and avant-garde ideas. The rest I kept simple, matching black, gray and brown.

The thing is... I don't want to run a bake sale, I just want to make you cry,
Hen.

I love you Victoria Justice

I'm wearing:

1. Striped t-shirt, from Zara.
2. Beige vest, from Pull & Bear.
3. Black super skinny jeans, from Asos.
4. Dale ox blood milled leather lace up boots, from Frank Wright.
5. Tribal necklace, key bracelet and leather satchel, all from Asos.
Last post I talked about how Clarissa defined part of my childhood and stuff but let's skip that and go straight to two-three years ago when I discovered Victoria Justice. I grew up watching Nickelodeon shows like Zoey 101, iCarly and Unfabulous (I'll talk more about the last one on a future post) and yes, Victoria Justice had parts in a lot of those shows before having her own: Victorious.

Victorious was special to me because of its simple yet effective humor and the real talent it had in its cast. Victoria Justice stood out the most, I don't know why exactly but she did shine more than everyone else. And I decided to investigate further. That's when I found out why I love Victoria Justice and it's not because she's super pretty (crushing here, hehe) it's because she's a fighter. She doesn't stop trying when the show's she's in struggle, she looks at the bigger picture and she's grateful for what she has (I read this post by her and yeah, I can confirm that).

Talking about my outfit seems a little awkward now but my friend Fer thought the photos would look nice in this hotel lobby and she was right (as almost all of the time). I think Victoria likes to look a little urban but not messy. I kinda like the same thing but most importantly, she inspired me to keep fighting even when the whole world seems to have all the doors closed.

I love you Clarissa Darling

I'm wearing:

1. Denim jacket, from Pull & Bear.
2. Striped t-shirt, from H&M.
3. Rusty skinny jeans, from Asos.
4. Hi-top white sneakers, from Adidas Originals.
5. Hip flask necklace, from Pull & Bear.
6. Cross ring pack, from Asos.
In my previous post, I explained why February's theme should be "Greatest Teenage Girls" and in order to accomplish that, we need to go where it all began. For me, Clarissa Explains It All is one of the few highlights the 90's had. I don't really like that decade, but that's besides the point. Clarissa Darling was this super cool girl who over analyzed everything and was always so insightful and smart.

She was the first cool teenage girl I saw. Her outfits were so elaborate, her room was like a teenage sanctuary and her parents were just plain weird. Clarissa really explained it all, from family, to crushes, fashion, jobs, every little thing. She was pretty cool.

My outfit here gives a little (really little) vibe from the 90's, the  denim jacket, the high-top sneakers, yeah. Like I said before, I love the idea of dissonance and resonance and that's what I wanted to portray in these photos. I relate that with Clarissa because she always had a certain amount of dissonance within her life but, at the end of the day, everything would echo and found itself in a harmonious place.

Wish I could explain it all,
Hen.

Welcome February!

Hey guys, a new month is beginning and I figured out (a month late, sadly) that I really want to do a sort of editor's letter every month and, also, have a theme for each one of them. That's why I decided that February's theme is: Greatest teenage girls. Like those super cool girls we see on TV and/or in real life.

There's always something on TV, movies, magazines and the internet world that revolves around teenage girls. Take Blair Waldorf, from Gossip Girl; Holly J. Sinclair, from Degrassi; Victoria Justice or Tavi Gevinson. All of them successful in their own particular way; all of them influential and with something to say about the world and, on top of that, all of them entertaining.

Last month, I got in touch with my inner teenage girl because I started reading Rookie Yearbook One, edited by Tavi Gevinson and, even though it's clear that I'm not a teenage girl, I found what I've read so far, truly inspirational. I discovered that there's a world in which teenage girls are not annoying and they're quite smart and clever. It's super cool.

Adding to this, I re-watched the first season of Gossip Girl and fell in love with it (all over again). It's thanks to characters like Blair Waldorf or Jenny Humphrey that I don't lose hope in the modern teenage girls. And they also had a great sense of style (kudos to the stylists there, though).

So I really hope you like this month and its theme. I mean, don't we all love cool teenage girls? (I mean this in a total non-creepy way, hehe).

I also made a playlist for y'all.
Love, Hen.
