Legion

You know how some shows go really deep into psychological issues and stuff like that? Could you imagine having that but in the X-Men universe? That’s Legion. A show about Charles Xavier’s (Professor X and founder of the X-Men) son; a man called David Haller, who has struggled with mental issues, anger problems and substance abuse. If the premise of this show sounds dark, that's because it is. It’s heavy, somber and twisted (with some lighter and funny moments caught in between).

I’ve been a big X-Men fan since I was little; I watched another related show called The Gifted (which features certain other characters from the comics and it’s awesome in its own way) and that kind of re-sparked my love for this Marvel franchise. Legion starts slow, a bit tedious even, but it quickly picks up the pace and becomes a really really cool and interesting show to watch. If you’re a fan of suspense, mental distress and the X-Men, you’ll love Legion.

4. Cloudfoam sneakers in white, from Adidas Neo.

Love Me Right 6
Once upon a time, I was a teacher's assistant and I gave my students a very important lesson: do things right, with passion. If you're gonna fail, make it an epic fail, put your whole self into the things you do, do it passionately or don't do them at all. Of course, I mean the things you love and the ones that you feel are an important part of your life... If it's not something transcendental, then it's okay to do enough.

I've always been like this, if I had something that I truly cared about coming up, I would put all my attention and efforts into that. That meant tons of sleepless nights, overworking myself and putting some strain on others. I hate being mediocre, feeling like there was so much more I could do, that's awful. So, I always try to do things right. I've been talking a lot about cleansing your life during this month and I feel like I have to address (if only just a bit) what comes during and after that.

Wanting something is nice and good but it's vital to care about and to make your best effort towards that goal. I want you to know how crucial is to do things right, to feel proud of what you accomplish and the way you act, if you're gonna take care of yourself, then love yourself right. Love others in the right way. Be nice, be smart, loyal and trustful. Let go of the drama because it only takes away the good in relationships. Ask the same from others and if you don't feel like you're giving enough or people are giving you what you deserve, then walk away and find new ways, new paths, new hope... Trust me, you'll be fine.

I don't need anybody in my life who doesn't want to be there

I don't need Georgina
I might or might not be quoting season 1 of Gossip Girl... I honestly don't care because this message is powerful enough to endure the possible backlash. Recent events drove me towards choosing "cleanse" as May's theme; life works in mysterious ways and, somehow, has a way of putting two and two together, you know? People come and go, you let them in, sometimes they stay because they deserve to, sometimes they do because they force it. I've been dealing with the latter.

You're not meant to please everybody and 99% of the time, you should put yourself first, be your priority. Life has taught me that you can't save anybody and it's not your job to solve other people's lives. I've been realising, more so lately, that I have many people in my life that don't have my back, that constantly use and abuse me... I've been more outspoken about it in the past few weeks and I don't think they've been liking it too much; I can tell that they're pushing me away because I don't tell them what they want to hear and, you know what? That's fine.

I don't need anybody in my life who doesn't want to be there. I'm tired of spending energy and thoughts on unworthy folks: If you don't like me, don't like the way I handle things, then you're welcome to leave. I'm done with haters, with people hurting me when I'm only trying to be nice, I'm done, it's not happening anymore. Part of cleansing my life is acknowledging that I don't have room for everybody and if they're not going to be nice and positive, constructive or helpful, then they don't deserve to be here and, in some way, they don't really want to be here so, thanks for everything you taught me and goodbye...

Love always,
Henry.

Focus On Me (in collaboration with Levi's)

I'm wearing:

5. Neck scarf, from Alex's closet.
6. Rings, from H&M.
Focus on Me Levis 501 Day 3
After a series of poorly made choices, of giving much and getting nothing back, I've made an obvious (but hard to follow through) decision: I'm gonna focus on me and that's going to be my top priority. I'm tired of focusing on others, on the many things I can do to help them or making things easier for them because I'm now reaching a point where I feel like I'm not taking really good care of myself, where most of my mistakes and bad decisions come from placing other people's needs before my own.

I need to focus on me. It sounds obvious because saying that "you need to take care of yourself before helping others" is easy, it just makes sense, right? But from theory to action there's a big leap and it's not something that you can achieve overnight, I don't think we put enough attention to that. However, part of cleansing yourself from bad vibes and toxic people is choosing you instead of  them. I have to believe in myself and the things I can do, the goals I can achieve.

This post is a collaboration I made with Levi's celebrating the 501 Day, and I feel like they're all about living your life to the fullest, being the best version of yourself: creative, innovative, courageous and with strong integrity. Focusing and working on me, that's how I'll avoid making stupid decisions and, instead, craft new projects and ideals: live my life the way I want to and, when I'm good and ready, giving something back to the world.

He's imperfect, but he tries...

He's imperfect, but he tries.
He's good, but he lies.
He's hard on himself.
He's broken and won't ask for help.

He's messy, but he's kind.
He's lonely most of the time.
He's all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie.
He's gone, but he used to be mine.

Last summer, while I was visiting my mom in Sacramento, I was drinking some tea and working from a Starbucks (because we didn't have home internet installed at the moment) and, for some reason, I paused the song I was listening to and heard some of the lines I wrote above in the voice of Sara Bareilles. I started tearing up because they made so much sense, I felt like they described some aspects of me and I couldn't help but feel them running through my soul. It's not simple to say but some days, I don't recognise me...

I used to make fun of those tacky reality shows where contestants made a big deal about others "being fake"; that always rubbed me the wrong way because I thought: how can these people know if someone's being real or fake? Who are they to judge? I think I'm finally beginning to understand. There's a lot of double standards, hypocrisy and abuse out there. You might think there's lots of love around you but, if you look closely, a lot of it it's fake, fake love.

True love between people means supporting, showing concern, helping out when needed, giving something back to others; I don't mean we're supposed to be nice and loving expecting the same in return but at the time when you feel like you need something from those loved ones and they're unable to give any sort of support, that's when you realise that something's off, that maybe the love you thought was there wasn't real.

Without really planning it, this month has been quite cathartic for me; I'm realising many things about myself and the people that surround me, how some of them are not a good fit and need to be released, how I don't value others enough and how people make me feel with their actions... This last one has proven to be particularly hurtful, making me feel (at times) that there's something wrong with me and the way I do things. The only thing I know is that the love I give is real and most of what I get in return has been fake love and I'm not putting up with that anymore. It's time to get rid of that and start my own emotional cleaning process.

Hidden Corners: Flora Caffe

Hidden Corners Flora Caffe Resena
Hidden Corners Flora Caffe Resena 2
Suena increíble ¿no?

Eden, a paradise of sorts, a special place where only the chosen ones live. We could go al biblical and mythological for this post but I'd rather not, haha; I chose Eden because of a deeper meaning, one that comes close to my soul. We all long for a better life, don't we? It's hard to find someone who's truly satisfied with the life he/she has, I know I'm one of those who are not... I want more, I've always wanted more... And not in a super ambitious-wanna conquer the world-way, because I'm not like that at all, but I want the things I want and it's clear that they're not here where I stand.

Is it wrong to want something better for myself even if that means going away in a quest to find it? That's one question I've been asking myself for a long time now and I think I'm inclining towards an answer to solve this situation. When I lived in Korea, I got to experience so many things (good and bad) but it was definitely an improvement; when I go visit my mom in the US, I also feel like they have it better than we do in Mexico, and that's getting under my skin.

Everyday I face a different struggle, whether it's public transportation, inefficiency, dumb people, dangerous people... The list goes on and on. Sadly, I don't think I can make much of a difference here, so I think going away is the best option for me. My Eden is out there, I know it, and I don't think it will come to me, I think I'll have to go out and look for that special place, my own version of paradise. Will I ever find it? Who knows... I certainly hope that I find someplace better within the process, someplace where I don't feel as frustrated, as hopeless...

Digimon Adventure Tri

Digimon Adventure Tri poster sm
Digimon Adventure Tri reached its end a few days ago. I don’t know if you know this, but Digimon is really important to me, it was one of my favourite shows when I was little and a big influence in how I think and perceive the world (and I mean that). Digimon has been a source of inspiration to me and one of the ways I keep my imagination and inner child, both, alive. Three years ago, Digimon was revived and a sequel project (6 movies) began.

At first I couldn’t contain my excitement. I watched and rewatched the first movie, I even did an editorial inspired by the male characters (see that photo shoot here). I watched the second movie in Japan, the third in the US... No matter where I went, Digimon was always with me. Now that this project is over, I can’t help but feel sad. It’s amazing how many shows from my childhood are getting sequels but it’s always bittersweet to see them ending. Nostalgia is a powerful marketing tool, and maybe that’s why Digimon Tri or Dragon Ball Super are successful.

Just like its predecessor, Tri taught me many things. It’s amazing to see how characters from the show grow up, change, evolve, the same way I did. That’s one of the recurring themes in Digimon: growing up... And I related to so many of the characters and their struggles. Sure, there were a few plot holes and not completely baked ideas along the way but my heart just didn’t care, it was full, I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters (again) just yet. I heard that there’s a new related project in the works and I truly hope my wish for more Digimon comes true.

Love always,
Henry.

I'm a simple guy, I like the things I like and I know the things I don't. I'm not too fond of drama, I like to keep things at ease and uncomplicated; if I have a problem with you, I'll let you know; if there's something I need to apologise for, I'll do it; if I can fix something or help out, I'll make that happen as well. I never have ulterior motives, I never do it for attention or anything like that, I'll just do it because that's who I am, it's what I do.

I like to surround myself with likeminded people and have a good time, that's what life is for, we're not supposed to suffer all the time, you know? So, here's where new friends pop up, they come and spice up your life with new stories, new laughs, new great moments to remember; whether it's a nice afternoon at a pretty café with good pastries, a photo-shoot or just a great talk. That's something I want in my life, in heavy doses; get rid of unnecessary drama and conflict and just have a good time with people I like.

For this outfit shoot, in partnership with Frank Wright (and featuring my new favourite retro looking suede boots), I went and did just that: came to a pretty café with a fairly new friend and had a good time. It was funny because we really, and I mean really, milked the location, we photographed every corner, our food, shot a video, and did outfit photos for me and for her... I would've liked to know what went on inside the waiters' minds, haha. But it was so much fun and definitely something to remember. We  really did have a good time.

May: Cleanse

May Cleanse
Let it all sink in...

Cleanse, it's a process or period of time during which a person attempts to rid the body of substances regarded as toxic or unhealthy. Let me start by saying that this month's theme is not about juices or weight loss, it's about taking the meaning of cleanse and expanding it. I'm in a time of my life where I've had enough toxins, enough dirt, enough bad juju; so, it's clear I don't need anymore of that but what I do need is to get rid of the residues they left.

I know that it sounds like an impossible task, and it might be, but I really wanna give it a go; I want to look back on all the things that have poisoned me and find a way to make my body heal, to cleanse it of all those nasty things. Along the way, I think we'll find some common ground and I hope some of the things I discover can be applied to your life and make you feel a bit better with whatever's going on right now. I know that we all have our own baggage but it helps to switch perspectives, even for a little while.

I wanna see this month as a process of discovering new things, letting go of the ones that have left thorns inside us and make it some sort of healing period. All of this sounds really deep, right? But I'll keep things simple ('cause that's what I do) and make it easy to digest. Join me in this discovery process as we find the things that are toxic, let it all sink and look for a way to the surface, as much as outfit, wisdom, advice and review posts allow us, haha. Don't forget to catch a new playlist by clicking here, this one goes along great with the theme, I promise.
