Digimon Adventure Tri

Digimon Adventure Tri reached its end a few days ago. I don’t know if you know this, but Digimon is really important to me, it was one of my favourite shows when I was little and a big influence in how I think and perceive the world (and I mean that). Digimon has been a source of inspiration to me and one of the ways I keep my imagination and inner child, both, alive. Three years ago, Digimon was revived and a sequel project (6 movies) began.

At first I couldn’t contain my excitement. I watched and rewatched the first movie, I even did an editorial inspired by the male characters (see that photo shoot here). I watched the second movie in Japan, the third in the US... No matter where I went, Digimon was always with me. Now that this project is over, I can’t help but feel sad. It’s amazing how many shows from my childhood are getting sequels but it’s always bittersweet to see them ending. Nostalgia is a powerful marketing tool, and maybe that’s why Digimon Tri or Dragon Ball Super are successful.

Just like its predecessor, Tri taught me many things. It’s amazing to see how characters from the show grow up, change, evolve, the same way I did. That’s one of the recurring themes in Digimon: growing up... And I related to so many of the characters and their struggles. Sure, there were a few plot holes and not completely baked ideas along the way but my heart just didn’t care, it was full, I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters (again) just yet. I heard that there’s a new related project in the works and I truly hope my wish for more Digimon comes true.

No sé si sepan esto, pero Digimon es muy importante para mí, fue uno de mis shows favoritos cuando era niño y una gran influencia en cómo pienso y percibo el mundo (y lo digo muy en serio). Digimon ha sido una fuente de inspiración para mí y una de las formas en que mantengo, ambos, mi imaginación y mi niño interno vivos. Hace tres años, Digimon fue revivido y un proyecto de secuela (6 películas) comenzó.

Al principio, no podía contener mi emoción. Vi y volví a ver la primera película muchas veces, hasta hice un editorial inspirado en los personajes (pueden ver esa sesión de fotos aquí). Vi la segunda película en Japón, la tercera en Estados Unidos... Sin importar a dónde fuera, Digimon estaba siempre conmigo. Ahora que este proyecto se acabó, no puedo evitar sentirme triste. Es increíble cómo tantos shows de mi infancia están teniendo secuelas pero siempre es agridulce verlos terminar. La nostalgia es una herramienta poderosa de marketing, y quizá es por eso que Digimon Tri o Dragon Ball Super son exitosos.

Justo como su predecesor, Tri me enseñó muchas cosas. Es asombroso ver cómo los personajes de este show crecen, cambian, evolucionan, yo hice lo mismo. Ése es uno de los temas recurrentes en Digimon: crecer... Y yo me sentí identificado con tantos de los personajes y sus desafíos. Claro, hay varios hoyos en la trama y también ideas que no se desarrollaron tan bien pero eso no le importó a mi corazón, aún así se llenó, aún no estoy listo para decirle adiós a estos personajes (otra vez). Escuché que hay un nuevo proyecto relacionado cocinándose y en serio espero que mi deseo por más Digimon se cumpla.

Digidestined: A Digimon Adventure Tri Inspired Editorial

As you may or may not know, I'm a huge fan of Digimon and earlier this month, a new series called Digimon Adventure Tri premiered in Japan, celebrating the franchise's 15th anniversary. It's a sequel to the original Digimon Adventure and you guys have no idea how excited I was about it. The thing with these sequels is that, sometimes, they over promise and don't deliver but, let me tell you, Digimon Adventure Tri delivers. It's amazing.

I wanted to do a photo-shoot inspired by the male characters of the series; I tried to capture some trait of every character. And while this may not be a carbon copy of their style, I do think it's something they would wear, something that feels very them. A single photo-shoot can't possibly compile all the love I have for Digimon, it was one of my favourite shows while growing up and one that really shaped me, that taught me how to day dream and gave me hours and hours of happiness. 

Now, that happiness has come back to my life and, I hope, to your lives as well.

Fascination

I remember being really young and watching cartoons all the time. From Pokemon, Digimon and Dragon Ball Z to Hey Arnold, As Told By Ginger and The Fairly Oddparents... I always longed to be inside those worlds, to be part of something that wasn't part of my reality. I grew up with this strange fascination to fiction, imagining that I was living all these different lives. Maybe that's why I wanted to become an actor back in the day (I only did tons of plays and one or two extra roles on TV), I was obsessed with the idea of living another person's life. 

I think that evolved with time and my whole "I want to be a novelist" thing began. That remains true to this very day; thanks to writing blogs, schoolwork and stories, I found out that I was really good at writing and that all the daydreaming and fascination with fiction developed a great sense of imagination within me, I managed to keep my inner child alive; perhaps that's why I'm childish sometimes (I still love cartoons and sugary cereals, haha). 

Being in your 20s and wanting to become a writer is such a cliché, I'm aware of that, but something inside me tells me that I'm good enough and that I can actually make something out of it. I started writing a series of novels a few years ago, even finished a draft of the first novel (that I think needs to be polished a bit) and started working on the second volume. I haven't touched those pages in years; however, I still think about the story most of the time, I write ideas that come to me and that will be developed in the future. In the end, it doesn't matter if I'm 5 or 25, my love for fiction and stories remain as alive today as it was back then and I intend to keep it that way. 

// Recuerdo ser muy chiquito y ver caricaturas todo el tiempo. Desde Pokemon, Digimon y Dragon Ball Z hasta Hey Arnold, Ginger y Los Padrinos Mágicos... Siempre quise estar dentro de esos mundos, ser parte de algo que no era parte de mi realidad. Crecí con esta extraña fascinación por la ficción, imaginando que estaba viviendo todas esas diferentes vidas. Quizá es por eso que quise ser actor en ese entonces (sólo hice muchas obras de teatro y uno o dos papeles de extra en la televisión), estaba obsesionado con la idea de vivir la vida de alguien más.

Creo que eso evolucionó y toda mi cosa de "quiero ser novelista" empezó. Eso permanece cierto hasta hoy; gracias a escribir blogs, cosas de la escuela e historias, descubrí que en serio sí era muy bueno escribiendo y todos mis sueños despiertos y fascinación con la ficción desarrollaron una muy buena imaginación en mí, logré mantener vivo a mi niño interno; tal vez es por eso que soy muy aniñado a veces (aún amo las caricaturas y los cereales muy dulces, jaja).

Estar en tus 20s y querer ser escritor es un gran cliché, estoy consciente de ello, pero algo dentro de mí me dice que soy suficientemente bueno y que sí puedo lograr hacer algo con eso. Comencé a escribir una serie de novelas hace algunos años, hasta terminé el borrador de la primera novela (que creo que necesita una pequeña pulida), y comencé a trabajar en la segunda. No he tocado esas páginas en años; sin embargo, aún pienso en esa historia la mayor parte del tiempo, escribo ideas que vienen a mí y que serán desarrolladas en el futuro. Al final, no importa si tengo 5 o 25 años, mi amor por la ficción y las historias permanece tan vivo hoy como hace muchos años y pretendo que se mantenga así.

Minato: The entertainment district.

Some people dream to see the Eiffel Tower, right? Well, my dream has always been the Tokyo Tower. I remember seeing it in Card Captor Sakura, Digimon and Sailor Moon (yeah, I watched those kind of cartoon shows when I was little) and falling in love with it. I mean, just look at it, it takes your breath away, doesn't it? The Tokyo Tower is on Minato, a district that has many amazing places, like Odaiba, Roppongi or the Pokemon Center. Whaaa?

That's right. On day three of my trip, I visited the Tokyo Pokemon Center, which I thought was gonna be more than a gift store (but wasn't), it was pretty cool though. I can say that my childhood is complete now. I like Pokemon, they're really cool. Nothing wrong with that. After spending a good hour between Eevee evolutions, I went to Roppongi, which is more of a foreigner area with tons of pubs, restaurants and great super markets. I ate sushi, drank white grape soda and witnessed tons of pretty city lights. A post with those photos will come soon, along with the Harajuku one.

I decided to shoot outfit photos with the Tokyo Tower on the background because it looks amazing and I couldn't waste the opportunity. I also took some photos outside the Pokemon Center with its mascots. Nice chaps. I'm wearing an actual cape, I love it, and the Converse from Ragtag that I mentioned on a previous post. While I didn't fall in love with Minato the way I did with Harajuku, I did find it awesome and, I also, reassured my love for the Tokyo Tower. It was a really nice day.

// Algunas personas sueñan con ver la Torre Eiffel, ¿cierto? Pues mi sueño siempre ha sido la Torre de Tokyo. Recuerdo verla en Sakura Card Captors, Digimon y Sailor Moon (sí, veía esas caricaturas de chiquito) y haberme enamorado de ella. Digo, véanla, te roba el aliento ¿no es así? La Torre de Tokyo está en Minato, un distrito con muchos lugares bien padres, como Odaiba, Roppongi o el Centro Pokemon. Whaaaa?

Así es. En el tercer día de viaje, visité el Centro Pokemon de Tokyo, que creí iba a ser más que una tienda de regalos (mi error), pero igual estuvo padre. Puedo decir que mi infancia está completa ahora. Me gustan los Pokemon, son buena onda. No hay algo malo con eso. Después de pasar una buena hora entre evoluciones de Eevee, fui a Roppongi, que es más un área de extranjeros con muchos bares, restaurantes y supermercados grandiosos. Comí sushi, tomé refresco de uva blanca y vi muchas luces bonitas. Un post con esas fotos vendrá pronto, junto con el de Harajuku.

Decidí tomar las fotos de atuendo con la Torre de Tokyo en el fondo porque se ve increíble y no podía desaprovechar la oportunidad. También tomé un par de fotos fuera del Centro Pokemon con sus mascotas. Bonitos ellos. Estoy usando una capa de verdad, la amo, y los Converse de Ragtag que mencioné en un post pasado. Si bien no me enamoré de Minato como de Harajuku, lo encontré muy buena onda y, además, reafirmé mi amor por la Torre de Tokyo. Fue un gran día.
