New recipes

People tend to get fixed on certain things, humans like routines (even when they say they don't). Routines are ways of creating habits and avoid the thinking process that should come with every new day. After a while, though, routines become dull and habits transform into boring activities that get people from day to day. Do, rest, repeat... Do, rest, repeat...

In many ways, life is similar to cooking. Routines and habits are recipes that people follow to feel like they belong somewhere, that they're on their way to something. How can people spice up their palate? By adding new recipes to the mix, that means trying new things, finding different ingredients, different activities that transform every day into something pleasant, into something great. New recipes are the key to kill dullness.

Sin embargo, después de cierto tiempo, las rutinas se vuelven sosas y los hábitos se transforman en actividades aburridas que llevan a las personas de un día a otro. Hacer, descansar, repetir... Hacer, descansar, repetir...

En muchas formas, la vida es similar a cocinar. Las rutinas y hábitos son recetas que las personas siguen para sentir que pertenecen a algún lugar, que están en camino a algo. ¿Cómo puede la gente estimular su paladar? Añadiendo nuevas recetas a la mezcla, esto significa probar cosas nuevas, encontrar ingredientes distintos, actividades diferentes que transformen cada día en algo deleitable, en algo grandioso. Son las nuevas recetas las que dan con la clave para matar el aburrimiento.

The Tokyo Journals

Travelling to Japan was one of the greatest decisions I've made in my entire life; going back again tops that. I saw myself immersed in a city that rarely sleeps, that's always efficient and well organised, a city that made me feel like a foreigner, like a stranger but, at the same time, made me feel at home.

I came with high expectations about this trip but the final results exceeded what I had in mind: from walking in the rain, to seeking refugee inside a store that became my haven; from going to Fashion Week to hanging out with new friends I made along the way; from seeing the cherry blossoms bloom, going to a cemetery, watch incredible architecture to eating my weight in Harajuku crepes... Tokyo proved to be one of my happiest eras, one where I learned a lot and one that's nowhere near its ending.

Napa: Way More Than Vineyards

During my trip to California, and I told you about this before, my sister wanted to visit Napa, she was so stubborn on the idea, and we ended up going to the vineyard land. Now here's what I gathered of Napa: it's famous because of the vineyards but they're not really all that, they're overpriced and, since we went during winter, not very pretty to look at. By 2 pm we were already done with the vineyard experience and I had to be resourceful to plan the rest of our day.

We ended up going to the town area and visiting three different, amazing, places: Oxbow Market; ButterCream and; Red Rock Café. The Market was a local-hipster kind of market but it was amazing, the design and structure were really cool and the products they offered too. If you're there, be sure to try some oils, spice spritzers and honey ice cream. After that, we went for lunch to ButterCream, one of the oldest bakeries-diners in town and, while the diner was already closed ):, I bought the best glazed donut I've ever had (for 50¢!!) and also a pretty great coconut-chocolate cookie. 

Finally, after asking one of the bakers at ButterCream, we went to Red Rock Café: a small but super cool diner decorated with everything, from Superman action figures, to fast-food chandeliers and surfboards. There, I tasted one of the most delicious mac & cheese dishes I've ever had, an amazing turkey burger and an equally good baked potato. So, if you ask me what I learned from that trip I'd say it's that cities have more amazing things in them than you could imagine. Napa is way more than vineyards. 

// Durante mi viaje a California, y les conté de esto antes, mi hermana quiso visitar Napa, estaba tan terca con la idea que terminamos yendo a la tierra de los viñedos. Y esto es lo que caché de Napa: es famosa por culpa  de los viñedos pero son la gran cosa, son bastante caros y, como fuimos en invierno, no estaban muy bonitos. Para las dos de la tarde, ya habíamos terminado con la experiencia del viñedo y yo tuve que ser ingenioso para planear el resto del día.

Terminamos yendo a la ciudad y visitando tres diferentes, grandiosos, lugares: Oxbow Market; ButterCream y; Red Rock Café. El Market era un mercadito medio hipster pero bastante padre, el diseño y la estructura estaban bien padres y los productos ofrecidos también. Si van ahí, asegúrense de probar los aceites, las especias en aerosol y el helado de miel. Tras eso, fuimos a almorzar a ButterCream, una de las panaderías-cafeterías más viejas de la ciudad y, aún cuando la cafetería ya estaba cerrada ):, compré la mejor dona glaseada que he comido (¡¡por 50¢!!) y una galleta de coco y chocolate excelente.

Finalmente, después de preguntarle a una de las panaderas en ButterCream, fuimos a Red Rock Café: un cafetería pequeña pero súper buena onda decorada con todo, desde figuras de Superman, hasta candelabros con comida rápida y tablas de surf. Ahí, comí uno de los mejores mac & cheese de mi vida, una hamburguesa de pavo buenísima y una papa al horno igual de buena. Así que, si me preguntan qué aprendí de ese viaje es que las ciudades tienen más cosas increíbles de las que imaginamos. Napa es mucho más que viñedos.

Strolling Down San Francisco

During my time in California, I had the chance to do a road trip to the incredible city of San Francisco. I was told that it wasn't like any other cities, that the vibe was different. People were right. San Francisco is amazing and weird in its own sense and I think I know why: many big companies, like Facebook or Twitter, have their headquarters there. That, of course, elevated the city and raised the prices of everything. San Francisco is expensive.

Many people have good jobs, but others can't seem to cope with the rise of prices and people arriving from all the country to work for the big names and leaving them without jobs. There are lots of crazy people in the streets. With that said, it also has an incredibly good side: it's multicultural like no other place I've seen. You get Little Italy, Little Japan, China Town, Valencia (the Latino neighbourhood), and regular American areas. That's amazing. The street art, the architecture... It's a really creative place. This is a photo journal through my lens, this is what caught my eye in this amazing city.

Me habían dicho que no era como ninguna otra ciudad, que la vibra era diferente. La gente tenía razón. San Francisco es grandiosa y rara en su propio sentido y creo que sé por qué: muchas compañías grandes, como Facebook o Twitter, tienen sus cuarteles generales ahí. Eso, por supuesto, ha elevado la ciudad y los precios de todo. San Francisco es caro.

Mucha gente tiene buenos trabajos, pero otros parecen no poder lidiar con la alza de precios y gente llegando de todo el país para trabajar para los grandes nombres y dejándolos sin empleos. Hay mucha gente loca en las calles. Con eso dicho, también tienen un lado bueno increíble: es multicultural como ningún otro lugar que he visto. Tienes Little Italy, Little Japan, China Town, (el barrio latino), y areas estadounidenses normales. Eso es increíble. El arte en la calle, la arquitectura... Es un lugar muy creativo. Éste es un foto diario a través de mis lentes, esto es lo que atrapó mi ojo en esta increíble ciudad.

(finding) The Perfect Spot (for photos)

Over the years, I've developed a certain malease about finding the perfect location for my photos. I think social media has made us want to record our lives and it's not just about taking lots of photos anymore, it has evolved into wanting to have perfect galleries, shooting perfect places and things, making sure everything we share is pretty. We've all seen those Instagram accounts that follow a theme: the white feeds; the ones that post photos of floors or; even, some special ones that are about posting photos with half and half imagery.

One of the most important things for me is finding the perfect spot for photos but, how do you find a good location to shoot? It isn't that difficult. I'm going to give you some advice on that: first up, you need to find a place with good light, that means, looking for the angle where the daylight hits you favourably, then; you also don't want lots of people walking around you, they might ruin your photo. A third factor is choosing a spot where you have enough space to frame the things you want people to show and; lastly, make sure that, if you or someone else is appearing in the photo, the clothes fit with the backdrop.

This was my second and final outfit shoot in San Francisco. We were walking around an area called "Little Italy", which is the Italian version of Little Korea or Chinatown, and it was filled with incredible looking houses and pretty things. I felt like I was inside a fairytale or something. I came across this pink house before lunch and instantly fell in love with it; after a while, we couldn't find it anymore and I was really sad about it but, don't ask me how, we ended up walking in front of it again and that's when I shot these photos. It was the perfect spot and I think my outfit looked great alongside it. It's important to always be prepared and look great, you never know when you'll come across a perfect spot for images.

// A través de los años, he desarrollado cierto malestar sobre encontrar la locación perfecta paramos fotos. Creo que las redes sociales nos han hecho querer documentar nuestras vidas y ya no sólo se trata de tomar muchas fotos, ha evolucionado en querer tener galerías perfectas, tomarle fotos a lugares y cosas perfectas, asegurándonos de que todo lo que compartimos es bonito. Todos hemos visto esas cuentas de Instagram que siguen un tema: las galerías donde todo es blanco; las que postean sólo fotos de pisos o; incluso, algunas más especiales que postean fotos con imágenes en mitades.

Una de las cosas más importantes para mí es encontrar el lugar perfecto para fotos, pero, ¿cómo encontrar una buena locación para fotos? No es tan difícil. Les voy a dar un par de consejos al respecto: primero, tienen que encontrar un lugar con buen luz, esto significa, buscar el ángulo donde la luz de día pega en forma favorecedora, después; tampoco quieren mucha gene que esté caminando por ahí, pueden arruinar la foto. Un tercer factor es elegir un lugar donde haya suficiente espacio para enmarcar las cosas que queremos mostrar y; por último, asegurarnos de que, si nosotros o alguien más saldrá en la foto, la ropa encaje con el fondo.

Éstas fueron mis segundas y últimas fotos de atuendo en San Francisco. Estábamos caminando por un lugar que se llama "Little Italy", que es la versión italiana de Little Korea o Chinatown, y estaba lleno de cosas bonitas y casas increíbles. Sentí que estaba dentro de un cuento o algo así. Me crucé con esta casa rosa antes de comer e instantáneamente me enamoré de ella; después de un rato, no podíamos encontrarla otra vez y eso me puso triste pero, no me pregunten cómo, terminamos caminando frente a ella otra vez y fue ahí que tomé las fotos. Fue el lugar perfecto y creo que mi atuendo lució muy bien aquí. Es importante siempre estar preparado y lucir bien, nunca sabes cuándo de cruzarás con un lugar perfecto para fotos.

A Day In San Francisco

I'm wearing:

I don't think I've ever showed you my outfits when I travel, and there's a reason for that: I'm not a practical traveller. I always wear the heaviest garments I have, layer stuff like crazy, add tons of unnecessary accessories and, as you can imagine, things don't always look right together. But I do that because there's no restriction to the weight and number of pieces you can wear for a flight, so that's how I manage to never pay for extra luggage.

However, things change when I'm doing a road trip. I went to San Francisco and this is one of the outfits I wore. The weather was cold and windy but not unbearable (I don't care about the weather when it comes to clothes, to be honest), so a denim jacket and a thick t-shirt underneath did the trick. I wouldn't be me without skinny jeans and I knew we were going to walk a lot, that's why I wore sneakers instead of boots. 

I think there are a couple of things that you should always pack with you when you travel: sunglasses are very useful; a pair of boots; a pair of sneakers; a lighter jacket (and a coat if it's colder); jeans; several t-shirts (balancing long sleeve and short sleeve ones); one or two sweaters or sweatshirts; a backpack and; a bag with accessories (rings, necklaces, bracelets), a hat and a scarf are also good ideas. With that, you can mix and match several outfits without sacrificing comfort but still looking pretty damn good and not like a tourist. Keep that in mind folks.

// Creo que nunca les he enseñado mis atuendos de viaje, y hay una razón para eso: no soy un viajero práctico. Siempre uso la ropa más pesada que tengo, haciendo capas y capas como loco, añado muchos accesorios innecesarios y, como pueden imaginarse, las cosas no siempre combinan bien entre ellas. Pero hago eso porque no hay restricción en el peso y cantidad de piezas que puedes usar para un vuelo, así es como me las arreglo para no pagar por equipaje extra.

Sin embargo, las cosas cambian cuando hago un viaje en carretera. Fui a San Francisco y éste fue uno  de los atuendos que usé. El clima era frío y con viento pero nada rudo (de todas formas no le hago caso al clima para vestirme), así que una chamarra de mezclilla y una playera gruesa fueron suficiente. Yo no sería yo sin jeans entubados y sabía que íbamos a caminar mucho, por eso me puse tennis en lugar de botas.

Creo que hay un par de cosas que siempre deberías empacar contigo cuando viajas: los lentes de sol son muy útiles; un par de botas; un par de tennis; una chamarra ligera (y un abrigo si hace mucho frío); jeans; varias playeras (balanceando mangas largas con mangas cortas); uno o dos sweaters o sudaderas; una mochila y; una bolsa con accesorios (anillos, collares, pulseras), un sombrero y bufanda también son buenas ideas. Con eso, puedes combinar tu ropa en varios atuendos sin sacrificar estar cómodo pero viéndote muy bien y no como turista. Tengan eso en mente, amigos.
