YouTube Monthly Recap: September

Hi there best friends! Hope you're doing awesome! September came and went in a flash, seriously, it all happened so fast! Haha. I think now I've been doing YouTube for a year and a half and it's been tons of fun; I really like the different aspects that come with it and how it differs so much from photography and the usual shenanigans I post over here.

For September, I continued featuring monthly favourites; did a really cool haul with menswear pieces from H&M, Frank Wright and, for the first time, Mango! Also gave you some tips on how to become a better student (and cheat on exams, haha) and talked about the people I see at the gym... They're very peculiar. Let's catch up, here are all the videos that went live throughout September!

See you next month to recap October!

Hope

Wisdom #15 Hope
One of the things I like most about romantic thinking is the strong connection that ideas must have with feelings. We often hear that, in certain scenarios, we mustn't follow our hearts, that we have to make decisions based on rational thinking. Romance could be thought as the opposite but I like to think it's not; that people say that because they like to simplify concepts and, in reality, romance is the balance of having ideas infused with emotion.

I think most of what I shared throughout this month revolved around my bad luck with relationships and difficult times I've faced but I want to end it in a different note. By now, I've come to accept the fact that there's a strong chance of me not finding true love and I'm okay with that, really... But I also have hope, deep inside, that that's not the case and I'll be able to get a happy ending.

We must always have hope, hope has to live on forever because, trust me, the moment it dies, a part of us dies with it as well. Our futures are not set in stone and we have the ability to moderately shape our lives and have them be what we want them to be. Hope isn't magic and it doesn't work by itself, it's something that we must use as fuel, something that motivates us to go into the world and fight for our dreams, for our romantic ideals.

Love always,
Henry.

100 Pieces of Perry (in collaboration with Perry Ellis)

100 pieces of Perry Perry Ellis GQ
100 pieces of Perry Perry Ellis GQ 4 I'm wearing:

3. Extreme super skinny jeans in black, from Asos.
4. Leather Chelsea boots in black, from Pull & Bear.
5. Rings, from H&M.
Get a similar look with East Dane
Tor Feren Chelsea boots, from Clarks / Bonded wool zip jacket, from Capital Goods / Nouvelle Vague sweater, from Maison Labiche / Tight jeans, from Cheap Monday.
100 pieces of Perry Perry Ellis GQ 5 This post is very important, I want to start by saying that, haha. Perry Ellis is a really cool menswear brand and they decided to shake things up by not doing a traditional presentation of their newest collection. They invited me (and a bunch of other stylish guys across the world) to make the street our own runway and showcase the collection, each of us wearing different pieces. The project is called 100 Pieces of Perry and it's a collaboration with GQ as well.

The two items that I got are really cool: first up (and my favourite) is a cropped anorak that came straight off the real runway show! I have to say I got a bit nervous because I really wanted to look good in it, being no model myself, and I think I pulled it off. It's a really cool and different piece and I love all the work that it has in it, like the XL pockets, the gold zippers and the lining in a fun print.

The second item I got was a crew neck sweater and, sure, it looks like a regular sweater with texture but what really makes it special is the fit. Damn, the fit is amazing. I look like I work out a lot more than I actually do, haha. So yeah, overall, I think I accomplished to turn the street into a runway and look really good in my Perry Ellis outfit. Of course, this wouldn't have happened without the expert lens of my friend and blogger-photographer Andrea Nahle, from The A Lens. You have to check out her blog, she's amazing!

You know how I always talk about letting people go, moving forward and stuff like that? Well, every coin has two sides and this situation is one of those. What to do when you want to get back in touch with someone? How to avoid the awkardness? And, most importantly, how to face the fear of rejection? Because it's possible that the other person has, indeed, move on and is no longer interested in you.

I don't like loose end in my life and I always try to make peace with everyone, even if they hurt me at a certain point in the past, it's part of my "being nice to everyone" approach. Sometimes, people are really open to discuss the things that drove us apart and even though we end up going our separate ways, it's nice to know that if, for some reason, we see each other again, it's going the a polite and tranquil moment.

That's one situation, the other scenario appears when you want to fix things and try to approach the person to understand the problem and, maybe, repair the relationship. To achieve this, you must get rid of your fears: if the other person says no to a meeting, then you can let it go and move past that, you did everything you could. And if the other person says yes, when you see each other, listen to everything he or she has to say and then bring your own arguments. It's going to be a difficult conversation but, in most cases, misunderstandings will clear up and a new, and improved, stage of your relationship will start there. I swear.

Love You To Death

Wisdom #14 Love You To Death

You don't need to be an evil person to do evil deeds. It's something about power: when you allow people to cross certain lines, overtime, they start gaining more and more control over your life. It's like a snowball effect, where you don't see things coming until they hit you like a school bus. I always say that people tend to over-react about the silliest things, but, here's something you may never expected to hear: I was in an abusive relationship and didn't know it until it was over.

And, sure, this girl didn't hit me or anything like that, but she had me eating from the palm of her hand. We weren't even boyfriend and girlfriend but she always managed to give me enough to keep me there, whether it was a kiss, a hint of flirting or a ray of hope. It was really sad because I always thought that someday she would give me a chance... She never did. It never happened. After thinking long and hard about it, I came to this conclusion: she didn't want to take things to the next level because she didn't want to lose me.

How's that? You may wonder. Well, I was her comfort zone, the one that always gave her strength, the one who admired her and boosted her confidence. She didn't want to risk losing that and I was so in love with her that I tricked myself into believing that she was the right one for me, that she would eventually realise that I've been there all along, that I loved her. Stuff like that only happens in movies; in real life, the only solution I had was to cut ties with her. It hurt like hell for a while but, slowly, I recovered and I'm better now, I know that it was a toxic relationship. That, my friends, is how I, painfully, learned the true meaning of I love you to death.

Love always,
Henry.

Dream (in collaboration with Gola Classics)

Dream in collaboration with Gola Classics
Dream in collaboration with Gola Classics 5 I'm wearing:

3. Knit sweater with embroidered crest, from Tommy Hilfiger.
4. Super skinny jeans in black, from Dark Future.
5. Print bandana, from Pull & Bear.

Dream in collaboration with Gola Classics 6 I once fancied a girl who had a very old-fashioned dream. She's older than me (being 27 now) and her dream had to do with getting married, having kids and being a stay home mom, as soon as possible. Call me crazy, but I think that's way too old school for this time. I still liked her, even with that, but thing didn't quite work out for us. I guess we wanted different things... I don't know.

We all have very different dreams. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to have a family and kids (because I do want that), but that's not part of my top priorities. There are many things that I would like to do first and, being completely honest here, I don't even know if I will ever find a girl whom I can start a family, haha, they don't seem to be into me. But, hey, who knows?

I did this post in collaboration with Gola Classics, a super cool brand from the UK, and one of the things I love about them is that they've been in the market for more than a 100 years, that's incredible, and they still manage to keep true to who they are and to dream on. It's about tradition, heritage, transcending from one era to the next one, dreaming that anything can happen. That, my friends, is pure romance. Go to their website for sneakers, cool backpacks and more!

Book Club #26: The Painter From Shanghai

Hey guys! As many of you know (and all of you should by now), I run an online book club here on the blog; the main goal is to find cool novels to share with you and, also, to prove a point that you can be into fashion and read more than magazines. I read this book a while ago and I still think it's something worth sharing, it really, truly is. Book Club #26 is The Painter From Shanghai, by Jennifer Cody Epstein.

// ¡Hola amigos!
Book Club 26 The Painter From Shanghai
Being a working woman in China was frowned upon, one who was an artist... She was a criminal... This novel tells the story of Pan Yuliang, a woman who was sold to a brother when she was a little girl and grew up in the world of prostitution until she was bought by a man at the beginning of the 20th century. She shows interest in painting but has to hide it because of how the Chinese society reacted to that. She dared to go even further and started painting portraits of naked women.

She had to leave China and move to Paris, where her work was more appreciated. Criticised often, her work was abhorred by Asians, but she never gave up. She wasn't interested in creating beautiful pieces, she wanted to cause a reaction in people, breaking the idea of "art should always be beautiful", claiming that true passion comes when you're able to create what you want; she was the one defining art, no one else could do it in her eyes.

Reading this book teaches you a big lesson: fight for what you believe. It doesn't matter if others don't believe in it, if people talk about you and give you a hard time. The only thing that matters is your own opinion and the idea of feeling satisfied and proud with your work. This novel is raw at some points but it's also very valuable in the sense that we all have a Yuliang inside of us, we all want to transcend, we all want to cause a reaction.

If you want to read this book, you can get it at Book Depository, with free worldwide shipping, along with other titles from Jennifer Cody Epstein!

Love always,
Henry.

Most of us go through life waiting for something great to happen. Seasons come and go and, as we grow older, we begin to realise that if we want something, we have to go and get it. It's important to understand that and make our peace with it. A few years ago, at least within the blogging business, things happened easier; posts went viral naturally and influencers were born out of nowhere.

Nowadays, things have changed. Achieving viralization is possible if you're willing to pay a price and, being honest, you can become really famous real fast with just a slight hint of strategy and talent (that is if you have the money to do it). We live in an era where reality TV stars can become supermodels, where perfection is just a matter of perception on social media and a time when creativity is no longer needed to be successful.

I don't mean to sound like a downer, not by any means, I'm' just trying to showcase some aspects of the world we live in today. Of course, some things manage to be exempted from this situations. You wanna know how to identify them? Look for honesty, for well thought and expressed ideas. There still are individuals with these characteristics, there are still brands that stay true to who they are, like my friends at Frank Wright who make the best boots in the world, you should seriously check out their website if you haven't already.

I think we'll always be waiting for opportunities but we also need to learn how to make things happen, staying true to who we are and being honest with the world.

Be The Kind of Person You'd Like to Meet

Wisdom #13 Be Kind
This has been one of my favourite quotes and, quite frankly, life mottos for a very, very long time. I'm going to jump on the memory train and transport us back to when I was 14-17 and didn't really like myself. I had self-esteem issues and I thought the only way of compensating them was being mean to people. I was awful to so many of my classmates and friends for no reason other than they allowing me to be like that.

I had a change of heart and decided to become something different, someone better, a greater version of myself. That was the moment I tried hard to be nice to everyone, really, every single person out there. Be the kind of person you'd like to meet. Imagine for a second that you're not you, that you're someone else, would you like to hang out with you (the real you)? Would you like that person?

I think this is really important. Treat others the way you'd treat yourself; if you can't find a person who fulfils all of your ideals, then become that ideal person. Choose yourself, be nicer, be gentle, be a romantic. Stop wasting energy on petty things, be the bigger person, it's so much easier than being mean and, believe me when I say this, you'll feel relieved and at ease because the only person you're trying to change will be yourself.

Love always,
Henry.

the power within 5
Potential is such an overused word; people say it all the time: you're not bad, you got potential; he's got all the potential in the world; you have the potential to be incredible... And the list could go on and on and on. Sometimes it is true, people got potential to do great things but we must always remember: there is a big difference between having potential to do something and actually doing it. It's important to do things, not just dream about doing them.

Potential could be defined as the power we have within ourselves to change a situation. It's the strength to accomplish something, to achieve a goal and follow our destiny. It can also be used as a way to avoid telling someone that he or she isn't good enough for an activity but they definitely have room for improvement and, again, we're talking about certain ability or power we have within ourselves to become better at something.

The beautiful thing about the power within is that it's there, inside us, just waiting to be triggered; and when that moment arrives, we strive and reach the stars. In some way, we're all special and we're all powerful but a great deal of us spend most of our time waiting for an opportunity, standing there, analysing possibilities and scenarios, hoping for that thing that will trigger our power, that will unleash our potential. We're waiting for our lives to start.

Some things about freedom

Life Journal 49
It's hard to love where you are; as humans, we're always looking for more, we always want to see what's out there. That's called drive, it's a longing for something, for freedom. How many times do we feel trapped in the place we live in? How many of our friends (even ourselves) hate their jobs, their salaries, their school, their family status? Life can be a lot like quicksand, the more we try to escape, to get away, the more trapped we are.

But life can also be like a curtain on an open window, catching the breeze, moving and shifting even while it sits on the same spot. Tons of times, freedom is a state of mind, a moment of clarity when we're able to see the things we want and a clear route to get there. Freedom is going with the wind, setting flight and going after our dreams, infusing those with passion, running, flying. Freedom is feeling at ease and letting ourselves be caught in the currents, freedom is letting go and moving forward.

Love always,
Henry.

There's something quite romantic about confrontation. Think about it: you care so much about something that you're willing to fight for it... There's nothing as underwhelming as indifference, there's no passion within indifference, just people wanting to step away from something; and while all that is useful and good in certain occasions, lives without confrontation tend to be slightly boring.

I'm not saying that you should be fire and dynamite all the time, but, there are moments where a bit of heat turns out to be exactly what you need. I bet you've had or heard about relationships that are dull and boring, people that break up because they have no spice in their lives... That sucks, but the important thing to understand here is that if you have explosions all the time, eventually, you blow up as well. Sometimes the smart move is to row, row, row your boat and get the hell outta there.

But, again, from time to time, it doesn't hurt to play with fire for a little while. Romance is about getting in touch with emotion, about feeling stuff and being passionate, about adrenaline. If you happen to find something that makes you feel that, keep it for a while but remember that, if you play too much with it, you're gonna get badly hurt. Row the boat, test the waters and get out when you had enough, when you're ready to settle down but not, never ever, before that.
