Why You Need To Watch Unbelievable

I've watched so many good shows this year, some more poignant than others... That's why I want us to talk about Unbelievable, it's this new limited series from Netflix, starring Kaitlyn Dever as a teenager charged with lying about being raped (she didn't lie) after the cops coerce her to say that her assault didn't happen; Toni Colette and Merritt Wever as two detectives looking to find the rapist who attacked Dever's character and many others. Rape is a very delicate subject, but Unbelievable has this way of looking deeper into the victims/survivors (instead of focusing on the criminal's mind) in such an insightful and graceful way. Oh, and did I mention it's based on a true story?

8 episodes, I devoured them in a single night. It's been ages since a show captivated me in that way but this one did. Not only it's about a very big and important subject, it's perfectly scripted, perfectly performed, it draws you in and makes you feel frustrated, uncomfortable, helpless, hopeful and so much more throughout the season. After watching it, I felt so mad but also useless, haha, not in a terrible way but somehow I learned that no one's really safe and that we need to support and be there  for each other, it's important that we start talking about sexual assault and that we help each other out.  I'm predicting Unbelievable will receive tons of accolades during the next awards' season and it completely deserves it. You have to watch it.

Henry.

A playlist for a good dinner party

Playlist 5 Dinner Party
When I think about my strange love for dinner parties I suddenly feel like a housewife, like Bree van de Kamp level of housewifeness, haha. But it's true, I really do love a good dinner party, I love being a good host and cooking and making sure everyone has a good time. Food, drinks, fashion and decorations are pretty important elements in a good dinner party but, guess what, a good playlist is important too! So I made one that might inspire you to create yours and, why not, host your own dinner party. 8 songs might not be enough but they're great for setting a vibe, okay?

Henry.

Growing up and realising that you're not the center of the universe is tough, haha. I was always an over-achiever, even as a little kid, very competitive, a born-leader, all that... But it came with consequences, a certain vulnerability that I didn't like to show and yet, it was something that became present without me actually acknowledging it... Very annoying for the kind of kid that I was, haha. I've told you a million times about how I changed in my teens and became nicer and kinder to people, but I don't think I've ever mentioned that being like that also came with a big dose of said vulnerability.

For years and years, especially the ones I spent loving girls who never loved me back, I wanted to become colder and show less emotion. I'm a sensitive kid, I'm always going to be that way, but I didn't want the whole world to know that, you know? I wanted to keep that side to myself and, yet, it kept popping up every time I worried about a friend, my family, people in general. The cold front I tried to achieve was something that didn't ever come naturally to me.

For a few years after my failure, I thought about conforming with the idea that I was going to be sentimental and people would see that and use it to their best advantage, that there was nothing more I could do about that. However, I've grown since then and I think that, nowadays, I'm better at concealing what I don't want people to see, I'm better at acting chillier towards people who deserve it. I'm still growing and learning, evolving, so this isn't a finish line, I know I'll be able to keep a cold exterior when it's necessary and, also, bring my vulnerability to the surface when it's needed.

I feel old but not very wise

Wisdom #79 Old But Not Very Wise
I love the idea of birthdays but I hate growing up. Most of my friends are older than me so, when I complain about my age, they tell me to shut up, that I'm still young and have my whole life in front of me but, I don't know, sometimes it doesn't feel like that. Looking back a few years ago, while I was still in college, I felt so sharp, so clever and smart, I remember even being cocky about it, haha (at the end of the day, I'm still a bit competitive), but nowadays I feel different, I feel dumber somehow, dumber and older: it's awful.

It has a lot to do with the fact that I haven't been as successful in my business ventures, it has to do with the fact that I love (and miss) school, I miss having educational challenges. I know that I've grown and learned and evolved from who I was back then but it still doesn't feel great. I want to try and change that, to focus on challenging myself once more and not be stuck in my comfort zone; I'm not getting any younger, that's a fact, but I know that I can become wiser, smarter, so I definitely want to push myself and aim for new heights.

Love always,
Henry.

September: Constantly Evolving

September Constantly Evolving Evolution is a constant in our lives...

Whether we like it or not, life takes us places. Even if we stay still, the world around us keeps on moving forward. We see ourselves grow, see people we know us change, scenarios mutate and, at the end of the day, I think we all try our hardest to keep up with the world, that's kind of our mission, our duty. Ever since I was little, I remember associating my growth with school, education, it was as if the grade I was in was what determined my behaviour, the things I was supposed to be doing (or avoiding), the way I needed to act and how I selected the people I surrounded myself with.

Sadly (at least for me), school ends and we're thrown in this grown-up world where educational hierarchies are replaced with a different set of rules to determine superiority over others. In Japan, they tend to use the terms senpai and kouhai (senior and junior, respectively) as a system to always be aware of who has a higher ranking in society, they maintain that even after being finished with school and apply it onto their lives at work. In Western society, it seems like it's more about looks, money, popularity and, more recently, social media following, than it is about attaining a higher level of education or age. Both systems have their own pros and cons.

Being done with college and having no budget for a Master's degree (at the moment) makes it seem as if my educational journey has come to an end; of course, I'm still learning tons of stuff and I can teach myself a new trick or two every now and then but it's not quite the same as going to school and having projects with a deadline that serve to move forward in school life and no other particular purpose. Yet, school or not, I'm still constantly evolving (we all are), the moments we experience along the way enrich our minds and souls; that's why, throughout this month, I want to talk about the continuous process of evolution, how we change and how we adapt to a changing world.
