Tourists

Traveling is one of the greatest privileges a person can have. It's stepping out of your world to enter a different one, with new people, new traditions, new ways of living. I've been fortunate enough to do a bit of traveling; I've been to the Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Tokyo, Seoul... Every city has left an imprint on my heart, on my brain.

For me, traveling requires courage, because being a tourist isn't easy. I like to try my hardest and blend in, live like a local, soak in all the life lessons these new cities have to give. I can tell you, so far, it works. I've been able to feel like a part of that new world, like I'm no intruder. Based on that, I teamed up with a couple other bloggers for this editorial, inspired on being a tourist. I hope you guys like it.

YouTube monthly recap: August

Hey guys! It's that time of the month again where I'm recapping all the videos that went online on my YouTube channel during the month of August. This has been a really good month for me and creating those videos was heaps of fun. Videos are way different from what I usually do here but, you know, I'm always up for a challenge.

Hope you guys like this and, if you do, come on board and subscribe to my channel for more useful or silly or fun stuff. I'll be waiting for you over there, okay? Thanks very much for all the support and I'll see you next month, when it's time to recap September.

// ¡Hey amigos!

Love always,
Henry.

Pop (a collaboration project with Tommy Hilfiger)

Pop collab with Tommy Hilfiger
Pop collab with Tommy Hilfiger 3 I'm wearing:

1. TH crest sweater in blue, from Tommy Hilfiger.
2. Shirt in gray and white, from H&M.
3. Collar tips with stags and chain, from Tally & Hoe.
4. Skinny chinos in black, from Zara.
5. Leather city sneakers, from Tommy Hilfiger.
Pop collab with Tommy Hilfiger 7 DiegoPopFridaPop Hey guys! A really cool thing happened this month: I was chosen to be an ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger for a couple of projects this year. That makes me feel very special. I can be very sleek and dark when it comes to the clothes I wear but I have a soft-spot for preppy items. Guess I always wanted the varsity jacket in high school or the family crest and stuff like that. That's where Tommy Hilfiger comes in.

I remember when they started with a campaign called "The Hilfigers", that was all about taking the brand to all ages and races and making all the people a family. As an advertiser, I loved it but; as a person, it resonated with me. Now, a couple of years later, I'm starting to feel as part of that family, as a Hilfiger.

The brand is currently sponsoring a really cool art exhibition called "#DiegoPopFridaPop" in Mexico City, it's all about Frida Kahlo and her husband (Diego Rivera) when they had to move to the States and how that transformed their lives and artistic style. Moving to a different country, even if it is for a short period of time, can change the way you look at life. All of the sudden, something inside you pops and you become a different version of yourself. I like that; I like those stories...

// ¡Hey amigos!

Birthdays

You get one day per year that's yours and only yours. Well, that's how it's supposed to work. I've never had that. I was born on the same day as my sister and we've always shared our birthdays. I guess we could've chosen to celebrate on different days but, in some way, we end up preferring to always do it together, it's a special bond that we have, something that only brothers could understand. I love my sister and I love sharing my birthday with her, that always makes it special day for me.

After turning 20, I started feeling less and less excited about my birthdays. I feel old but not very wise; and the fact that my age is only increasing doesn't make me very happy nowadays. My birthday (later this month) excites me for a couple of reasons but, also, makes me kind of sad. I don't like the idea of getting older, I don't like growing up. I want to be like Peter Pan or a vampire or something like that. But, guess what? That's fiction and this is a different story, a bittersweet one. I just hope that life has something greater in mind for me, something that can make me love my birthdays again.

// Se te da un día al año que es tuyo y de nadie más. Bueno, se supone que así funciona. Yo nunca he tenido eso.

Love always,
Henry.

He who walks alone Minga Berlin Socks Review 4 Hi! This month is coming to an end and I feel like I still have so much to do, so much to say. I promised life lessons for August and here's one more: you always walk alone. And I mean this in the best way possible; even when you're with company, even in a crowded place, you always walk alone in your own path, the one you choose, the one that's meant for you.

I've learned that it's not selfish to put yourself first, you have to do that because no one else will do it for you. I used to try exhaustively to save everyone, to make them come with me towards my goals and a greater good but I learned that every person out there has its own pace and goals. Sure, we come together from time to time but, esentially, we always walk alone and that's perfectly fine.

Speaking of, this post features a collaboration I did with the coolest German brand of socks I've seen: Minga Berlin. I received two pairs of socks (you can see both on my Instagram) but these granny socks were my favorites. I feel like walking in clouds and, since I'm walking alone, that's an amazing feeling. Be sure to check out their website for tons of socially responsible, unisex, godly socks with free worldwide shipping if you order 2 or more pairs. Thanks Minga Berlin, you're awesome.

// ¡Hola!

Book Club #15: Life Form

Hello there, best friends! By now you should know that I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog. While it's not tightly related to fashion, reading is one of my favorite activities and I do think people within the fashion industry (and everyone else too, really) need to read things other than magazines. If there's been an author that has transformed the way I read and, honestly, look at life is Amélie Nothomb. This particular book enlightened me in ways I didn't expect, so, here it goes: Book Club #15 is Life Form, by Amélie Nothomb.

// ¡Hola mejores amigos!
What's the harm in exchanging letters with someone? Isn't having a pen pal one of the coolest things in the world? I used to think that; I had a pen pal and it was something amazing; even though we didn't know each other in person, we had a lot of things in common and confided in each other; it was a great friendship... Until it wasn't. My pen pal stopped replying and a chilly air filled the distance between us. It was really hard for me to understand why that happened, that was until I read this book.

In Life Form, a semi-biographical work, Amélie Nothomb exchanges letters with a soldier in Afghanistan. He's morbidly obese and depressed. Due to his loneliness and desperation, he names his body fat Scherezade and begins a romantic relationship with it/her. He and Amélie send letters to each other, he gives tons of details about his life while she's a bit more reserved. One thing leads to another and the extension of the letters and the interest from Nothomb's side increases. Their relationship starts to mutate and grow until they become really close, dangerously close.

Filled with sarcasm, dark but hilarious moments and knowledge, Nothomb proves that people can get really close even when the physical distance is significant. Sometimes one gets too close and that scares the other side (which is what I like to think happened between me and my pen pal). In between truths, lies, challenges and, in true Amélie Nothomb fashion, deep thoughts about body image and self esteem, Life Form is one of the most refreshing things I've read this year and I will be grateful to Amélie for giving me clarity on something that had been troubling me for quite some time.

Henry.

Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch
Sucker Punch 5 I'm wearing:

1. Sunglasses, from Jeepers Peepers.
2. Varsity jacket with leather sleeves in burgundy, from Zara.
3. Graphic tank top, also from Zara.
4. Extreme super skinny jeans in dark blue, from Asos.
5. Sneakers, from Vans.
Sucker Punch 7 Hi! I wanna talk about something really important today: life will throw some curveballs your way every now and then and those will be unexpected. It could happen when you feel your whole life is going in the right direction, it could also happen when you're life is about to change. I called those "sucker punches". A sucker punch is something you don't see coming and, let me tell you, it hits hard.

Recently I had a pretty horrible thing happening to me; I was about to get an amazing job and, all of the sudden, the reason why I was sought was the very same factor why I didn't get it (if you're wondering, it's because I'm a blogger and the media corporates in Mexico are still living in the stone age, apparently). But yeah, I was a bit heartbroken because they told me that I was already in and, in one minute, my hopes were crushed.

I know that when things like that don't happen is because you are meant for greater ones but it still hurt like hell. I received a sucker punch and I'm just starting to recover. That sucks, you know? That's the reason why I don't let myself get too excited about things because when/if they go away, I feel devastated. But, also, those awful punches always leave you with a lesson. If you're strong enough, you'll come back, OHKO your opponent (what ever that might be) and be pronounced a champion. Just keep fighting until the end.

// ¡Hola! Yo llamo a esos "sucker punches".

Photo Journal: Folsom, California

Folsom California Photo Journal 1 Folsom California Photo Journal 11
Folsom California Photo Journal 7 Folsom California Photo Journal 8 A few weeks ago, I traveled to Folsom, a small town within Sacramento County, in California. Why was I there, you may ask, I went because my mom married a man from her past and, honestly, how many times can you attend your mother's wedding? It was something that I needed to do. The wedding was really beautiful (but kind of private, therefore the lack of photos) and my mom seems really happy nowadays. I guess, and I said this during my toast, that the most important thing to tell my mom was that I'm glad she's going to be okay and, also, to guarantee her that I will be okay too.

Whether I like it or not, I'm growing up and my mom leaving me to begin a new chapter of her life might be a blessing hidden in disguise. I lived alone in Seoul but this is completely different, my everydayness has gone through so many changes in the shortest period of time, it's crazy, but I'm coping. I was in Folsom for almost a week and it's a beautiful little place. People there are simpler, nicer; everything is covered in vanilla twilight and every corner is a photograph. It's kind of amazing.

I didn't do much in those days; my mom's living in the suburbs and there's no public transportation over there. I did regular stuff: the mall, went for cake, supermarkets, all that. It's funny how that quiet place charmed me in ways I can't fathom. Folsom has become, too, a big part of my life and I will be spending a lot of time over there. I'm starting to love it, from its old-town-square, to its bridges and sunsets. I'm ready to embrace the change, to soak in vanilla twilight.

Those summer stories 3 Hey pals! Summer is coming to an end; throughout July and August I've been using the hashtag #EternalSummer everywhere, not because I like summer (I'm more of a winter or autumn kinda guy) but because I like what summer means for a lot of people: it's a moment of rupture, a chance to start something new... And when I begin with a novelty chain, I want it to last forever, I want those summer stories to be eternal.

I've been taught that nothing lasts forever, it's something that I know in my brain but, my heart wants a different path, you know? I want to believe that some things are eternal, that some stories never truly end. If that makes me naive or silly, I honestly don't care. Eternity is a beacon of hope for me, something that tells me everything is going to be okay and there will be stories that will surpass you beyond your years as a person in this planet. I want to believe that.

Maybe watching Free changed my perspective on life a bit, it's this Japanese series about friendship (and swimming ¿?) that is really pure; I long for something like that in my life, I want to have eternal relationships and moments. I heard once that we're all made of stardust, that's some powerful energy we possess; we can be just like stars, twinkling for someone even if we're already fading out years and years away. During the rest of the summer, gaze at the stars, think about longevity, being eternal, think about those summer stories.

// ¡Hey amigos!
