Detach: disengage, remove, leave or separate from a situation or an individual. I've experienced that feeling many times in my life with me being the one left behind (mostly) and as much as I would like to say that it gets easier each time it happens, it doesn't really happen like that. BUT this post isn't about being the one left behind, it's about having to detach yourself from situations and people that are toxic and dangerous.

During my recent trip to California, some bad things happened to me and my family: my mom's current husband (soon to be ex-husband) lost his mind and became a crazy violent person; I will not go into details because this isn't the time or place but we learned (in the hard way) that sometimes you need to cut people from your life because they're literally threatening it. When we managed to do that, oh God, we were able to sleep again, to laugh and live without complications, it was amazing.

Toxic people tend to push a hammer down on you so slowly that you don't realise how badly they sink you below the surface. It's not until you detach yourself from them and their drama that you start to remember how things should be and you can start to strengthen the parts of you that were damaged. A toxic person (call it a friend, a significant other, even a family member) will change you and the way you see the world, it's sad but it's true, the important thing here is to not let them destroy your spirit, you need to start seeing those events and people as a way of becoming wiser and tougher. Detaching from bad things is good for your soul.

Small Talk

Wisdom #72 Small Talk
When I was little, it was hard for me to make friends, I remember going to therapy and all because I just wasn't a friendly kid. Growing up, my mom used to tell me that I needed to be more "political" with people, meaning that it would be good to be more polite, engage in small talk every now and then, smile a bit more and try to get along with others. That's really good advice, if you ask me; it's truly been helpful and I can't thank her enough for that.

Lately, I've been watching up close what not being able to be polite, being good at small talk and, overall, trying to get along with others can do to you: you start to become cranky, isolated and the world in front of you makes less and less sense. I don't mean to say that you should be cheerful and talk with absolutely every person you ran into but, trust me when I tell you this, if you don't make an effort, life will only get more complicated (more than it needs to be, anyways).

Love always,
Henry.

I remember being really young and watching cartoons all the time. From Pokemon, Digimon and Dragon Ball Z to Hey Arnold, As Told By Ginger and The Fairly Oddparents... I always longed to be inside those worlds, to be part of something that wasn't part of my reality. I grew up with this strange fascination to fiction, imagining that I was living all these different lives. Maybe that's why I wanted to become an actor back in the day (I only did tons of plays and one or two extra roles on TV), I was obsessed with the idea of living another person's life.

I think that evolved with time and my whole "I want to be a novelist" thing began. That remains true to this very day; thanks to writing blogs, schoolwork and stories, I found out that I was really good at writing and that all the daydreaming and fascination with fiction developed a great sense of imagination within me, I managed to keep my inner child alive; perhaps that's why I'm childish sometimes (I still love cartoons and sugary cereals, haha).

Being in your 20s and wanting to become a writer is such a cliché, I'm aware of that, but something inside me tells me that I'm good enough and that I can actually make something out of it. I started writing a series of novels a few years ago, even finished a draft of the first novel (that I think needs to be polished a bit) and started working on the second volume. I haven't touched those pages in years; however, I still think about the story most of the time, I write ideas that come to me and that will be developed in the future. In the end, it doesn't matter if I'm 5 or 25, my love for fiction and stories remain as alive today as it was back then and I intend to keep it that way.
