The throne room.

Only one can be king, he will rule, he will reign, he will be a leader, looked up to by many, feared by others... Tales of kings and queens have played a big part on my life; I can't begin to tell you how many times I've imagined living in a different era, in a kingdom. I've always thought that I'd be a pretty good king. Even my name has a king's charm to it. I could be "Henry the Twentieth", for all I know.

But kingdoms faded and gave way to different political systems; the power shifted and transformed over the generations and now we're stuck with government issues and, truth be told, I wouldn't like to be a president. I want to be a king. Only one can be king, even if it's only in a stage created by my imagination.

Love always,
Henry.

My Converse: Converse Spring Summer 2015

A few weeks ago, the Converse team invited me to an art gallery where they introduced their campaign for spring/summer 2015. The main theme behind it was pretty cool: My Converse. They asked us to bring our favorite pair of Converse so they could take a portrait of them (pictured above). I believe every piece of clothing has a story of their own, I bought my gold Converse in a really great thrift store called RAGTAG, in Tokyo. In a way, I will always relate those shoes to Japan and the amazing time I spent there.

The gallery was filled with photos of several pairs of Converse, they all had a story to tell. It was pretty cool, in a  nostalgic and sweet kind of way. The part of the newest collection that really caught my eye was the collection infused with Andy Warhol and pop art. Let me tell you, those sneakers look amazing. Besides that, I also liked the Converse made out of leather and the ones that have spikes and studs. I like simplicity in Converse but the ones that have special features are definitely my favorites, that explains why I love my gold ones so much.

Thanks Converse for immortalizing my kicks!
Love always,
Hen.

Book Club #8: Tokyo Fiancée

Hello there, best friends! By now you should know that I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog. While it's not tightly related to fashion, reading is one of my favorite activities and I do think people within the fashion industry (and everyone else too, really) need to read things other than magazines. So far, this author has made quite a few appearances over here and today marks the 4th review on her work. If you guessed Amélie Nothomb, you are correct. This book is officially on my top 3 favorite works from her: Book Club #8 is Tokyo Fiancée, by Amélie Nothomb.

// ¡Hola mejores amigos!
Love in a foreign country is a funny thing... It's a weird balance between sorting out your feelings and, also, adapting to a new life in a different place. In Tokyo Fiancée, Amélie Nothomb tells her own story, the tales of her return to Japan, her first time living alone, the battles she faces against herself and the challenges that arrive in the form of Rinri, a male Japanese student who seeks her out to learn French.

Their lives couldn't be more different: he's very noble, easily surprised, a planner; she's kind of broken, keeps a lot to herself, has a deep love for the Japanese culture and doesn't like to waste a day. What starts as a teacher-student relationship (she's 21, he's 20), evolves into a sweet romance, as sweet as Nothomb allows it to be, which makes it very peculiar. Funny, heart-breaking and powerful at the same time, this book was glued to my eyes and to my brain. I couldn't stop reading and, also, was unable to stop marking my "favorite" moments with post-its.

For me, Amélie Nothomb's books have been very easy to read and understand, but maybe that's because I'm completely fascinated by her brain. You know that game where you are asked "who would you like to have dinner with, dead or alive?", well she would definitely be present on that dinner party. I recommend to read this after The Life of Hunger (which I already reviewed and strongly suggest to be the first approach to Nothomb's mind), and, also, after Fear and Trembling (which narrates simultaneous events unrelated to love). Trust me, you'll enjoy this reading.

Let me know what you think of this entry with a comment!
Love always,
Hen.

The stage changes.

When I say "life is a show" what I mean is that, for me, life is a huge stage, one where we perform everyday, not as fiction characters but as ourselves (well, some of us do). I use the stage metaphor because I find it very complete, we coexist with others, people watch us, we watch some things from the backstage, certain scenarios unfold and, at some point, pivotal characters finish their act and they leave.

Said stage is bound to change from time to time, we evolve and so does our environment. I think it's very important to know how to adapt, assimilate and transform to the new challenges, victories and opportunities that will come our way, to accept where we come from and, that way, understand where we are going. Life is a show and the stage changes sometimes. It's up to us to change with it to survive and avoid an early curtain call.

Love always,
Henry.

BIMBA Y LOLA Spring / Summer 2015

A few weeks ago, BIMBA Y LOLA presented its spring/summer collection from 2015. The inspiration and theme behind it is TROPICANA, a word that is vastly used when referring to tropical, caribbean, jungle and beach matters. Therefore, the whole collection has a tropical vibe, teasing beachwear but creating fresh and beach-inspired clothes for the city.

I think, this time, BIMBA Y LOLA is showing a collection that's a bit more wearable than their past one (you can see that here), since now there's a lot of separates and the pieces aren't as heavy and long as their winter ones. I still love both collections very much, tho, haha. As usual, the quality in textiles, jewellery and overall design is impeccable.

What do you think?

Hen.

January: Life is a show.

Welcome, welcome, 2015 is upon us...

I'm not gonna repeat all the clichés I've reading lately; I'm not expecting 2015 to "surprise me" or "write a new chapter in the 365 blank pages I have in front of me", God, I don't even think 2015 is going to be "the best year of my life" nor do I want it to be (being honest, I still have a lot of years to live through and I don't need this to be the best of them all).

I don't mean to sound pessimistic, quite the contrary actually; you see, I don't have New Year resolutions, it's not in me to do things like that. But I do have long-term plans, dreams, wishes that aren't limited to one year specifically. With this, I want to say that we should make the most of our year, of course, but I'm not going to act all eager about something that doesn't, well, excite me. The first day of the year felt like any other day and, aside from writing the wrong date for a couple days, nothing really changed.

It's in our hands to accomplish the things we've wanted and face the challenges that will come ahead. I wish you the best of luck and I hope to receive some as well. After all, life is a show and we're expected to perform every single day. That's what this month will revolve around, different aspects of that metaphor within all the different sections of the blog. I hope things turn interesting and you'll like what you see and read. In the meantime, check out the playlist, I really liked this one.

Take a moment to consider everything you want to accomplish and start working to get it.
Again, best of luck and tons of love,
Firma Hen Evia 200

Firma Hen Evia 200
