Book Club #15: Life Form

Hello there, best friends! By now you should know that I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog. While it's not tightly related to fashion, reading is one of my favorite activities and I do think people within the fashion industry (and everyone else too, really) need to read things other than magazines. If there's been an author that has transformed the way I read and, honestly, look at life is Amélie Nothomb. This particular book enlightened me in ways I didn't expect, so, here it goes: Book Club #15 is Life Form, by Amélie Nothomb.

// ¡Hola mejores amigos!
What's the harm in exchanging letters with someone? Isn't having a pen pal one of the coolest things in the world? I used to think that; I had a pen pal and it was something amazing; even though we didn't know each other in person, we had a lot of things in common and confided in each other; it was a great friendship... Until it wasn't. My pen pal stopped replying and a chilly air filled the distance between us. It was really hard for me to understand why that happened, that was until I read this book.

In Life Form, a semi-biographical work, Amélie Nothomb exchanges letters with a soldier in Afghanistan. He's morbidly obese and depressed. Due to his loneliness and desperation, he names his body fat Scherezade and begins a romantic relationship with it/her. He and Amélie send letters to each other, he gives tons of details about his life while she's a bit more reserved. One thing leads to another and the extension of the letters and the interest from Nothomb's side increases. Their relationship starts to mutate and grow until they become really close, dangerously close.

Filled with sarcasm, dark but hilarious moments and knowledge, Nothomb proves that people can get really close even when the physical distance is significant. Sometimes one gets too close and that scares the other side (which is what I like to think happened between me and my pen pal). In between truths, lies, challenges and, in true Amélie Nothomb fashion, deep thoughts about body image and self esteem, Life Form is one of the most refreshing things I've read this year and I will be grateful to Amélie for giving me clarity on something that had been troubling me for quite some time.
