Is being a blogger all I've ever wanted?

Am I living the dream? Certainly not. Being a blogger has been a fun job, one that wasn't meant to be a job. When I first started writing a blog about my life, it was supposed to be for my friends and those who were around me, I never quite imagined where it would take me and how much more of an audience I ended up having. The opportunities and experiences I've had so far are something that I truly treasure, but, is being a blogger all I've ever wanted?

The answer is no. Is it something that I enjoy doing? Of course! I never imagined myself writing or creating content for magazine or a TV network; I always thought I'd work as a publicist from 9:00 'til 6:00, haha. But I'm glad I'm not doing it, that's not the life I want for myself (not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm not meant for it), I'm glad I'm able to have creative freedom, control of what I post and the brands I work with. I'm inside a creative world, the entertainment industry and, for now, I think I'm content with that.

Cuando recién empecé a escribir un blog sobre mi vida, se suponía que sólo era para mis amigos y aquéllos cercanos a mí. Nunca pensé o imaginé a dónde me llevaría y cuánta más audiencia tendría. Las oportunidades y experiencias que he tenido hasta ahora son algo que en serio atesoro, pero, ¿es ser blogger todo lo que he querido?

La respuesta es no. ¿Es algo que disfruto hacer? ¡Claro que sí! Nunca me imaginé escribiendo o creando contenido para una revista o canal de televisión; siempre pensé que trabajaría como publicista, de 9:00 de la mañana a 6:00 de la tarde, jaja. Pero me da gusto no estar haciendo eso, esa no es la vida que quiero para mí (no digo que haya algo malo con esa vida, es sólo que no estoy hecho para eso), estoy feliz de poder tener libertad creativa, control de lo que publico y de las marcas con las que trabajo. Estoy dentro de un mundo creativo, de la esfera del entretenimiento, y creo que, por ahora, estoy contento con eso.

The Instagram Look

I'm wearing:

Why is everyone on Instagram so good looking? That's a question I've been asking myself for quite some time. Every time I go to the "explore tab", I see all these really cool shots of people with incredibly nice features; they're either really pretty or have hot bodies and I sit here wondering: what's up with that? I think Instagram gave a place for all those who couldn't be models to express themselves and be a part of the fashion-entertainment industry; I mean, c'mon, it seems like half of the bloggers out there sometimes feel like they're on America's Next Top Model, haha. 

I've heard people say that Instagram creates a lot of anxiety for "regular" people, like, they're always watching these seemingly perfect lives with pretty food, pretty people, pretty everything, and I get it but; since I've been a blogger and YouTuber for some time, I also know and understand what goes behind all that perfection, behind the "Instagram look"; a good photo requires some skills and it always, always, helps when you're attractive. If you're normal-looking (like me), then you have to depend a lot on said skills: a good camera, good editing, good taste.

Those who claim to live a perfect life just because it looks like that on social media are lying, don't let yourself get fooled by that; we all struggle but, also, when your job depends on those platforms, it's natural that you put a lot of effort in the things you share. I like to say that the way I dress comes from my own mind and choices but, for this one look here, I tried to recreate a look that I see a lot on Instagram's explore tab: white unbuttoned shirt, white sneakers, black jeans, sunglasses and a sort of bad-ass attitude. I know I'm not Insta-hot but I think I did a good job; who knows, maybe it's fine to go with that the crowd likes every once in a while, right?

// ¿Por qué toda la gente en Instagram es tan guapa? Esa es una pregunta que me he hecho por bastante tiempo. Cada vez que voy a la "pestaña de explorar", veo todas estas fotos padres de gente con muy buenas características; son o muy bonitas o tienen muy buen cuerpo y yo me siento aquí preguntándome: ¿qué pasa con eso? Creo que Instagram le dio un lugar a todos aquéllos que no pudieron ser modelos para expresarse y ser parte de la industria de la moda-entretenimiento; digo, a veces parece que la mitad de los bloggers allá afuera sienten que están en America's Next Top Model, jaja.

He escuchado a personas decir que Instagram crea mucha ansiedad para la "gente normal", porque siempre están viendo estas vidas aparentemente perfectas con comida bonita, personas bonitas, todo bonito, y lo entiendo pero; como he sido blogger y YouTuber por un rato ya, también sé y entiendo lo que hay atrás de toda esa perfección, detrás de la "estética Instagram"; una buena foto requiere ciertas habilidades y siempre, siempre, ayuda cuando eres atractivo. Si tienes un aspecto más normal (como yo), entonces tienes que depender mucho en dichas cualidades: una buena cámara, buena edición, buen gusto.

Aquéllos que afirman tener una vida perfecta sólo porque así parece en redes sociales, están mintiendo, no se dejen engañar por eso; todos sufrimos un poco pero, también, cuando tu trabajo depende de esas plataformas, es natural que le pongas mucho esfuerzo a las cosas que compartes. Me gusta decir que la forma en que visto viene de mi propia mente y decisiones pero, para este atuendo de aquí, traté de recrear un look que veo mucho en la pestaña de explorar de Instagram: camisa blanca desabotonada, tennis blancos, pantalones negros, lentes de sol y una actitud como rebelde. Sé que no soy Insta-hot pero creo que hice un buen trabajo; quién sabe, tal vez está bien ir con lo que al público le gusta de vez en cuando, ¿no?

December: Originality

What does "originality" mean?

A work created with a unique style and substance can be called original. To think independently, come up with something fresh, different. The concept itself has gone through some changes through the years and modern times have made the idea of being "an original" harder to achieve. I don't think it's about finding the newest marvels, pretty much everything we know and we can come up with is a construction of previous knowledge and ideas, but that's okay. I believe in originality as something more on the tracks of clever, well constructed, ideas. Something coming from a personal perspective, a way of looking to the outside through a certain pair of glasses.

Of course, as a fashion and lifestyle blogger, it's hard to bring something new to the table. Most of us do quite similar stuff: outfit photos, event coverage, tutorials... Things like that. I think the most important part is doing things in our own way, show life through our own pair of glasses (like I said before); dozens of bloggers can watch the same thing but only a few know how to tell a story in a way that feels fresh, clever and well constructed, that's what I've been trying to do during the past few years.

For December, I chose "originality" as the blog's theme, not only because I feel like there's a lot to say about it but also because I think, as bloggers, we're losing the drive to tell and share stories, to connect with others; quite frankly, I don't know how much more "original" we can be (we're all very limited here)... Throughout the month, I'll talk about that: my origins, the things I've done, the things I could've done better and the plans I have for the future. It will be about thinking, creating, sharing, connecting and evolving. As usual, don't forget to catch the latest playlist I created by clicking here.

¿Qué significa "originalidad"?

Una obra creada con un estilo y substancia única puede llamarse original. Pensar independientemente, tener ocurrencias frescas, diferentes. El concepto ha pasado por varios cambios a través de los años y los tiempos modernos han hecho que la idea de ser "un original" sea más difícil de conseguir. No creo que se trate de encontrar las maravillas más nuevas, casi todo lo que sabemos y lo que se nos ocurre es una construcción de conocimiento e ideas previas, pero está bien. Creo en la originalidad como algo más parecido a ser astuto, tener ideas bien construidas. Algo que viene de una perspectiva personal, una forma de mirar hacia afuera a través de un cierto par de lentes.

Claro que, como blogger de moda y estilo de vida, es difícil traer novedades al juego. La mayoría de nosotros hace cosas muy similares: fotos de atuendo, cobertura de eventos, tutoriales... Cosas así. Creo que la parte más importante es hacer las cosas en nuestra propia manera, mostrar la vida a través de nuestro propio par de lentes (como dije anteriormente); docenas de bloggers pueden presenciar la misma cosa pero sólo pocos saben cómo contar una historia de forma que se sienta fresca, astuta y bien construida, eso es lo que yo he intentado hacer durante los últimos años.

Para Diciembre, elegí "originalidad" como el tema del blog, no sólo porque siento que hay mucho que decir al respecto, pero también porque creo que, como bloggers, estamos perdiendo esas ganas de contar y compartir historias, de conectar con otros; siendo honestos, no sé qué tanto más "originales" podemos ser (estamos muy limitados en esto)... Durante el mes, hablaré sobre eso: mis orígenes, las cosas que he hecho, las cosas que pude hacer mejor y los planes que tengo para el futuro.
