Book Club #22: Kafka On The Shore

Hey there, best friends! After failing to fulfil my duties as a book reviewer last month, the book club is officially back! This is the section where I try to find a cool title and share my thoughts with you. I read a lot and it's important for me that you guys know that. Who knows? Maybe it will inspire you to read a bit more... After being skeptical about this author at first (and changing my mind, of course), I decided to read another title from him. This is one of the weirdest books I've ever read and I don't regret doing so at all. Book Club #22 is Kafka On The Shore, by Haruki Murakami.

Tras estar escéptico con este autor al principio (y cambiar de opinión, por supuesto), decidí leer otro título de él. Éste es uno de los libros más raros que he leído y no me arrepiento de nada. El Book Club #22 es Kafka On The Shore, de Haruki Murakami.

If you think this was your average teenage story, guess again... Kafka On The Shore begins with the story of a teenage boy, self-named Kafka, who wants to run away from home, find his missing sister and mother and start anew somewhere else. The second chapter is a completely different scene, detailing some weird accident involving little kids. Then, you go back to Kafka and his story; afterwards, you start reading Nakata's story, a middle aged man, unable to read and not very bright, who can talk to cats... That's where this book stroke me as odd. It's not your typical tale told from the perspective of different characters, oh no.

As Kafka's journey progresses, he meets people along the way and finds himself involved in some weird situations, things he can't explain completely. Simultaneously, Nakata starts looking for a missing cat and the unfolding of that situation make him travel far from home and closer to Kafka. Both stories start to show links between them and supernatural events start appearing: fish falling from the sky, ghosts visiting bedrooms and mascots from brands offering riddles to the characters. It gets weirder and more captivating with each chapter that passes.

Maybe Kafka On The Shore is one of those novels that can be confusing and annoying at first; I wasn't that into it until I was completely absorbed by it. It made think lots about life and how connected we are to the world, even when we feel like we're not. Maybe our stories are linked to someone else's, someone we haven't met... I don't know, it could happen, right? Somehow, I ended up feeling wiser and more confused than ever after reading this but, oh boy, it was worth it.

Kafka On The Shore comienza con la historia de un adolescente, auto-llamado Kafka, que quiere huir de su casa, encontrar a su hermana y madre perdida y empezar de nuevo en otro lugar. El segundo capítulo es una escena totalmente diferente, detallando un accidente extraño donde hubo niños involucrados. Después, vuelves a Kafka y su historia y; luego, comienzas a leer la historia de Nakata, un hombre de edad media, que no puede leer y no es muy brillante, que puede hablar con gatos... Ahí es cuando el libro me pareció extraño. No es la típica novela contada desde la perspectiva de diferentes personajes, oh no.

Mientras el viaje de Kafka progresa, conoce gente en el camino y se encuentra involucrado en situaciones extrañas, cosas que no se puede explicar completamente. Simultáneamente, Nakata comienza a buscar un gato extraviado y el desenvolvimiento de esa situación lo hace viajar lejos de casa y más cerca de Kafka. Ambas historias comienzan a mostrar vínculos entre ellas y eventos supernaturales empiezan a suceder: peces cayendo del cielo, fantasmas visitando dormitorios y mascotas de marcas dando acertijos a los personajes. Se volvió más raro y cautivador con cada capítulo que pasaba.

Quizá Kafka On The Shore es una de esas novelas que son medio molestas y confusas al principio; no me gustaba tanto hasta que fui completamente absorbido por ella. Me hizo pensar mucho en la vida qué tan conectados estamos al mundo, aún cuando sentimos que no es así. Quizá nuestras historias están vinculadas a las de alguien más, alguien que no conocemos... No sé, podría suceder ¿no lo creen? De alguna forma, terminé sintiéndome más sabio y más confundido que nunca al terminar de leer esto pero, déjenme decirles, valió la pena.
