Japanese Cherry

Two years ago, after I learned that I was going to do a semester abroad in South Korea, I started to think about the places in Asia that I would like to visit. I decided that when school was over, I was going to go to Japan and China for the winter break. Due to a Visa problem, I didn't go to China but my mind was set on Tokyo and to Tokyo I went. It was a short holiday, six days I believe, but that was enough to make me fall in love with the city.

Two years later, I was on my way back to that place that meant so much to me. Everything was arranged to be a completely different experience: I was staying at a different place, going for much longer, had Fashion Week and I had to balance working with vacationing. I can't even begin to compare the first time in Japan to the second time, they were both incredible in their own way and, as cheesy as it may sound, I promised myself to try and go back at least once per year.

This was the first time I was able to see the Japanese cherry. I just happened to be there when they blossomed and it was amazing. Cherry trees are my favourite kind of tree and I felt extremely lucky to be able to see them up close. I guess when you manage to fulfil a dream, you feel like the whole thing was worth it, that going there was the right thing. For me, going away to Japan was something that I desperately needed, a sort of emotional release. What are the consequences now? I'm still figuring that out...

// Hace dos años, después de saber que iba a irme un semestre de intercambio en Korea del Sur, comencé a planear los viajes que quería hacer en Asia. Decidí que cuando el colegio terminara, iba a ir a Japón y China para vacaciones de invierno. Por un problema de Visa, no pude ir a China pero mi mente estaba fijada en Tokyo y a Tokyo fui. Fue un viaje pequeño, creo que de seis días, pero eso fue suficiente para que me enamorara de la ciudad.

Dos años después, estaba en camino hacia ese lugar que significó tanto para mí. Todo estaba acomodado para ser una experiencia diferente: me hospedaba en un lugar distinto, iba por muchos más días, tenía Fashion Week y también debía balancear trabajo con vacaciones. No puedo ni empezar a comparar la primera vez en Japón con la segunda, ambas fueron increíbles en su propia forma y, por más cursi que suene, me prometí hacer todo lo posible para regresar al menos una vez por año.

Ésta fue la primera vez que pude ver los cerezos japoneses. Tuve la fortuna de estar ahí cuando florecieron y fue increíble. Los cerezos son mi tipo favorito de árbol y me sentí increíblemente suertudo de poder verlos de cerca. Creo que cuando consigues cumplir un sueño, sientes que todo valió la pena, que ir ahí fue la decisión correcta. Para mí, irme a Japón era algo que necesitaba desesperadamente, una forma de liberación emocional. ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias ahora? Aún estoy tratando de descifrar eso...
