Book Club #23: The Book Of Proper Names

Hello there, best buddies! I promised a double dose of the book club for this month and I'm keeping my word! For me, it's always about finding a cool novel to share with you and, also, I love boos, so, it's amazing to have a chance of writing reviews about the things that I read. This is yet another novel from one of my favourite authors (if not the favourite one) and with this one, I can reaffirm my love for her. Book Club #23 is The Book Of Proper Names, by Amélie Nothomb.

Ésta es otra novela de una de mis autoras favoritas (si no es que es la favorita) y con ésta, puedo reafirmar mi amor por ella. El Book Club #23 es The Book Of Proper Names, de Amélie Nothomb.

Destiny begins with something as simple as your name... How many legends are out there in the world? Incredible characters usually have incredible names. It's not the golden rule but, from the minute you're named, there's a legacy for you to follow. Plectrude, the main character in The Book Of Proper Names, was born under unusual circumstances: her mom killed her dad, went to prison and gave birth to her just before committing suicide herself, her only wish was for her daughter to be called Plectrude. Her sister takes care of the baby and treats her like her own.

With a name like that, you can either be terribly ugly and weird or a powerful character. Nothomb goes for the latter, Plectrude lives a fairytale-like life during her childhood and grows up to be a quirky, enchanting, beautiful girl. During the first half of the novel, we're introduced to Plectrude's unique way of doing things, her struggles with school, power and, also, her peculiar love for unreal love stories and ballet, which leads her to enrolling at a ballet academy.

The second half of the novel, in true Amélie Nothomb's fashion, deals with Plectrude's life at the Academy, the developing of her eating disorders and her complete disconnection to emotions. That's when it gets really interesting; I've always said that Nothomb's best works are the autobiographical ones and, although The Book Of Proper Names is fictional, it has the same scent of her more realistic writing. The ending is a bit of a let-down but it's still incredible what this woman can do in novels that are less than 200 pages long. Definitely one of my favourite titles from her.

// El destino comienza con cosas tan simples como tu nombre... ¿Cuántas leyendas existen en el mundo? Increíbles personajes usualmente tienen nombres increíbles. No es la regla de oro pero, desde el minuto que recibes un nombre, hay un legado para seguir. Plectrude, el personaje principal en The Book Of Proper Names, nace en circunstancias inusuales: su mamá mata a su papá, va a la cárcel y da a luz antes de suicidarse, su único deseo era que su hija se llama Plectrude. La hermana se queda con el bebé y lo trata como si fuera suyo.

Con un nombre como ese, puedes o ser terriblemente fea y rara o un personaje poderoso. Nothomb va por la segunda ruta, Plectrude vive una vida de cuento de hadas para su niñez y se convierte en una niña encantadora, peculiar y hermosa. Durante la primera mitad de la novela, somos introducidos a la manera única en que Plectrude hace las cosas, sus dificultades con la escuela, el poder y, además, su amor peculiar por historias de amor imposibles y ballet, esto último la lleva a unirse a una academia de ballet.

La segunda mitad de la novela, en completo estilo de Amélie Nothomb, lidia con la vida de Plectrude en la Academia, el desarrollo de sus trastornos alimenticios y su completa desconexión ante los sentimientos. Ahí es cuando se pone muy interesante; siempre he dicho que los mejores trabajos de Nothomb son aquéllos autobiográficos y, aunque The Book Of Proper Names es ficción, tiene los mismos matices que sus escritos más realistas. El final es un poco decepcionante pero aún así es increíble lo que esta mujer puede hacer en novelas que son menores a 200 páginas. Definitivamente uno de mis títulos favoritos de Amélie.
