Vulnerability

Wisdom #75 Vulnerability
The way we behave has always seemed a bit weird to me, there's a lot of interaction with strangers (mostly thanks to social media) and when we transcend and try to get together in real life, certain aspects complicate everything. Nobody likes feeling vulnerable, it's commonly seen as being weak, you put down your guard and let people in, I believe that's difficult for some people... Showing vulnerability can result in a deeper connection with others or, on the opposite side of the spectrum, a scary feeling that makes people go away.

As much as I hate feeling weak, I don't necessarily associate that with showing my vulnerable side; I'm a sensitive guy and sometimes I feel way too much; so when I connect with others, I easily find myself being too trustful; I believe in people but sometimes they tend to shatter that bond. Feeling vulnerable is not a bad thing, I think, it helps to deepen your bonds with people... Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way and, sometimes, when you feel like things are going great and you found a new interesting, valuable, person... That's the moment they cut you off... And it sucks. So what can we do about it? Should we be meaner, colder? Should we just carry on and keep moving forward? I don't have a definite answer but I will keep trying to figure it out.

¿Deberíamos no darle importancia y seguir adelante?
Love always,
Henry.

Dear Sacramento 4
A  few months ago, one of my close friends told me that I should watch this movie called Lady Bird, I think it was partly because it's set in Sacramento but I also feel like the plot had a little bit to do with that. Basically, Lady Bird is a story about hating where you are but kind of loving it as well; it's a dark comedy at times but it has this eery sense of nostalgia to it that I really, really loved; it shows how we connect with our parents, with our best friends and with the places we live in.

I happened to watch it during my trip to Sacramento and I think that watching it while I was there really changed the whole way I absorbed it, you know? There's this one scene near the ending where they show you a lot of iconic places around Sacramento and that made me think about how much this city has given me over the past few years (and I say this with a hint of sadness because I won't be coming back in the near future, my mom is moving elsewhere pretty soon). That's why I chose the blue house that's featured in the movie as the backdrop for these photos.

So, dear Sacramento, thank you so much for all the amazing spots you've given me to snap photos, for all the murals and sculptures and cafés; for all the weird people I saw on the streets, for all the long walks I took to get from place to place. Thank you Sacramento because you reminded me how it feels to fall in love at first sight (with a Tumblr girl, nonetheless), because you gave me some of the best ice cream I've ever had and some of the worst too, haha; for making me feel confident about moving somewhere else and actually finding out a bit more about myself. Dear Sacramento, I had some amazing and some really bad experiences but, overall, I'll always remember you with so, so, so much love.

Henry.

Why do we go back to people?

Wisdom #74 Why do we go back to people
You know how people say that the dumbest thing you can do is doing the same thing but expecting different results? Well, I'm pretty dumb in that sense. I don't think I make mistakes on a regular basis but when it comes to interpersonal relationships, I'm not as savvy as I'd like to be. I have people in my life that, quite honestly, should not be there anymore but I keep them around due to remnants, nostalgic value (if you must name it), and every time I go back to them in hopes of getting back what we once had, I end up hurting.

Why do we go back to people that don't come to us? I still don't know a clear answer but I guess it has to do with missing the past.  I once had a great time with those friends, then the seasons changed and their hearts did the same; connecting with people is not easy but when I say something, it's genuine, when I put effort, it's because I mean it. I guess the real lesson here isn't about nostalgia or sadness, it's about letting go and stop putting yourself in emotional danger...

Love always,
Henry.

Boy Wonder 2
Sometimes I'm amazed at myself, haha. I remember watching The Perks of Being a Wallflower a few years ago and connecting to the character of Charlie, at one point he says something like "I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be", and that stuck with me because I feel like I'm like that too. No matter how happy I am, there's always a trace of sadness within me and; even when I'm really sad, I can't let myself be beaten just like that, so I push my happy side to get back up.

"Boy Wonder" is one of the many nicknames for Robin, you know, Batman's sidekick, and I don't know why but he's also a character that I've been connecting to lately. I watched Titans last month and I was surprised at how much I understand the character of Robin and the way he thinks; he's dark but there's also some light inside of him. I like that duality, I feel like I have that too. It's not a cliché kind of thing where I say something silly like "I can be your best friend or your worst enemy", it's more of a "there's darkness and light, sadness and happiness, in all of us, I just choose to embrace both."

When I talk about this with people, they instantly think that I'm depressed or that I should see a psychologist or something, I feel like they get a bit scared because it's not an easy thing to understand. I feel like people always try to put labels on you, to put you in a box, so they know how to treat you or behave around you... But I'm not like that, I feel like we have so many different aspects within our personalities and it's important to embrace them and make the most out of them, you know, become a Charlie, a Robin, a wallflower, a boy wonder.

March: Connection

March Connection
We're all trying to connect, aren't we?

I was watching this weird anime show the other day (it's called Kiznaiver) where the main thing about the characters is that they're completely disconnected from each other and how they all long to have that certain something special between them. You don't have to be a genius to figure this out, we're all trying to connect with each other on so many different levels, it's one of the fundamentals of being human.

In one way or another, we're constantly interacting with other people; in real life, over on social media, it's all a big network of people reaching out to people with good and bad intentions. Connecting doesn't always result in a meaningful relationship, you know? Over the years, I've experienced so many different kinds of relationships, I've seen people that I cared about complete abandon me, I've been meaningful to people that I don't even acknowledge. We live in a strange world.

Yet, one truth remains: we're a sociable species, we need to talk to others, to interact, give opinions and take blows from harsh comments every now and then. It's because we don't understand that we wonder that the others are thinking and desperately try to understand every word they say. Sometimes this ends up in misunderstandings, sometimes this scares others. Connecting can make you feel very vulnerable and no one likes that, yet, when you find the right people, it's that vulnerability what strengthens your bonds. This month will revolve around connection and what it means to me and others, I hope you stick around for that. No playlist this time, but you can totally go ahead and watch Kiznaiver, it might give you some ideas, haha.
