YouTube Monthly Recap: January

Hey guys! January came and went incredibly fast! I still can't believe we're in 2017, that's insane. December and January were nice but tough months for me because I went to Sacramento to visit my mom and then I had to get back to Mexico which, quite honestly, hasn't been that great. But, hey, things move forward and I have to do the same.

Throughout the month, I shared my resolutions for the new year and also gave you some advice on how to achieve your own; I showed you a bit of my trip to Sacramento; did a jelly bean challenge with a fellow YouTuber friend; tried on some cool Korean eye patches and; finally, told you about my current favourites. Here are all the things that went live during January, enjoy!

Small Towns

Some people say that it's better to live in smaller towns, it's more comfortable, less crowded and chaotic. Some people say small town life is richer, that it's good for spending time with your loved ones, to breath cleaner air, to appreciate the little gifts of nature. Some people may tell you that but I won't be one of them. Small towns are cute, they serve a purpose but, after a while, they become real dull and boring.

I don't know if it's because I grew up in a big city but I'm used to a hectic lifestyle, a busy schedule and I sort of learned to roll with it. Like I said on a previous post, I didn't get to travel a lot when I was little but that has changed a bit in recent years. I lived in Seoul for a while, got the chance to go to Tokyo, Los Angeles, Las Vegas... All big cities and, for some reason, I really feel like I belong there, you know?

I love small details like being able to go out for a burger late at night, seeing tall buildings, people on the streets, concrete roads and lights everywhere. Big cities are my thing and, even though it's nice to change scenery and visit small towns every once in a while, I'm definitely more comfortable being part of the busy vibe and endless movement that comes with bigger places. Small towns are good for laid back people, I'm just not one of them yet.

Algunas personas quizá dirán eso pero yo no soy uno de ellos. Las ciudades pequeñas son monas, sirven un propósito pero, después de un rato, se vuelven sosas y aburridas.

No sé si es porque crecí en una ciudad grande pero estoy acostumbrado a un estilo de vida intenso, un horario ocupado y, en cierta forma, aprendí a vivir con eso. Como les dije en un post reciente, no tuve mucha oportunidad de viajar cuando era niño pero eso cambió un poco en los últimos años. Viví en Seoul por un tiempo, tuve la oportunidad de ir a Tokyo, Los Ángeles, Las Vegas... Todas ciudades grandes y, por alguna razón, en serio siento que pertenezco ahí, ¿saben?

Me gustan pequeñas cosas como poder salir por una hamburguesa tarde en la noche, ver edificios altos, gente en las calles, caminos de concreto y luces por doquier. Las ciudades grandes son lo mío y, aún cuando es bueno cambiar de escenario y visitar lugares pequeños de vez en cuando, definitivamente estoy más cómodo siendo parte de la vibra ocupada y el movimiento eterno que viene con lugares más grandes. Las ciudades pequeñas son buenas para gente más relajada, yo todavía no estoy en ese estado.

I know it's over, I'm just not over it.

It's hard to let go and forget about someone. Sometimes our mind and heart aren't synced and the first wants one thing while the latter wants a completely opposite thing. Have I ever told you I fall in love super easily? It's true. I'm a firm believer in love at first sight and it has happened to me one too many times (95% ending terribly, though). But yes, my heart and mind get synced for a full minute to fall in love with some girl and, moments later, they start wanting different things.

When I tell you that 95% of those crushes end terribly, I mean it. I'm one of those guys that never get the girl at the end of the movie; actually, if my life was a movie I'd be forever billed as the funny best friend and, even at the times where I hate that, I've learned to live with it. The one part that always breaks me is feeling like I'm not over something that didn't even start, that I didn't get the chance to say or do what I wanted; my mind tells me to forget, my heart asks me to grieve. Most times, I know it's over, I'm just not over it.

// Es difícil dejar ir y olvidar a alguien. A veces, nuestra mente y corazón no están en sincronía y el primero quiere una cosa, mientras que el segundo quiere todo lo opuesto. ¿Alguna vez les he contado que me enamoro muy fácilmente? Es verdad. Soy fiel creyente del amor a primera vista y me ha pasado eso más veces de las que deberían (el 95% terminando terriblemente). Pero sí, mi corazón y mente se sincronizan por un minuto para enamorarme de alguna niña y, momentos después, comienzan a querer cosas distintas.

Cuando les digo que el 95% de esos crushes terminan terriblemente, lo digo en serio. Soy uno de esos chavitos que nunca terminan con la niña al final de la película; de hecho, si mi vida fuera una película, yo sería acreditado como el mejor amigo por siempre y, aún en los días que odio eso, he aprendido a vivir así. La parte que siempre me destruye es sentir que no estoy superando algo que ni siquiera comenzó, que no tuve la oportunidad de decir o hacer lo que quería; mi mente me dice que olvide, mi corazón pide que sufra. La mayor parte del tiempo, sé que se acabó, sólo que no estoy listo para dejarlo ir.

Lost Boy

I've been obsessed with Peter Pan for a really long time. It all started when I watched the 2003 version of the movie and, I don't know, something really clicked inside my brain and it was powerful enough to take over my thoughts. I started thinking: what if I could be like Peter Pan? What if I had the choice to remain young forever? And it hit me like a bullet: I don't want to be old, I want to stay young forever.

Of course, life happens and time doesn't really stop for anyone, I'm getting older with each day passing and there's no Peter Pan that will come to my window and take me to Neverland to be with the other lost boys for eternity. It's funny because I feel younger than my age in most scenarios but when I'm hanging around people way younger than me and I have to assume a "grown-up role", I'm quite successful at it.

So yeah, deep down, I want to be a Peter Pan, a lost boy, who will remain a kid forever, that's how I feel inside but the outside world keeps moving forward and I don't want to be left behind. Still, I'll hold on to every little magic moment, every memory, every piece of my soul that exudes youth. Maybe if I believe it hard enough, I'll earn the right to become a Peter Pan, forever in love with a Wendy but always choosing to remain young.

Todo comenzó cuando vi la película de 2003 y, no lo sé, algo hizo click intenso dentro de mi cerebro y fue lo suficientemente fuerte como para apoderarse de mis pensamientos. Comencé a pensar: ¿qué pasaría si pudiera ser como Peter Pan, si tuviera la opción de permanecer siempre joven? Y me pegó como una bala: No quiero envejecer, quiero ser joven por siempre.

Por supuesto, la vida sucede y el tiempo realmente no se detiene para nadie, estoy creciendo con cada día que pasa y no hay un Peter Pan que vendrá a mi ventana y me llevará al País de Nunca Jamás para estar con los otros niños perdidos para toda la eternidad. Es chistoso porque me siento más joven de mi edad en la mayor parte de los escenarios pero cuando estoy conviviendo con gente mucho más chica que yo y tengo que asumir el "papel de adulto", soy bastante bueno.

Así que sí, en el fondo, quiero ser un Peter Pan, un niño perdido, que se mantenga joven por siempre, así es como me siento por dentro pero el mundo exterior sigue avanzando y no quiero quedarme atrás. Aún así, me aferraré a cada pequeño momento de magia, cada recuerdo, cada pieza de mi alma que exuda juventud. Quizá si lo creo con mucho ahínco, me ganaré el derecho de convertirme en un Peter Pan, por siempre enamorado de una Wendy pero siempre eligiendo permanecer joven.

Diner Dreams

I didn't get to travel a lot when I was little; money was a bit tight and, I don't know, I guess my parents weren't big fans of travelling far, it was always the East coast (to see my dad's side of the family) or the West (to see my mom's). I was one of those kids that watched a million American TV shows and movies, that made me fall in love with a culture that wasn't truly mine but, hey, who says you can't treasure something that feels yours, even if no one else understands?

One of the things that resonated in mind for ages was the idea of diners. Those places that were in the middle of the road, with a robust lady taking orders, people eating pancakes, drinking unlimited coffee, asking for the day's specials and decorated in a retro-1950's manner. Man, going to one of those was a big dream of mine when I was younger. Funny enough, I saw one a few years ago when I went to Los Angeles and didn't even bother to go in, haha. 

Well, during this winter break, I went to Mel's with my family. Mel's has been there since 1947 and I loved everything about it. Of course, the diner experience wasn't quite like I saw on TV but I still had an amazing burger, played with a jukebox and my robust waitress turned out to be a really really pretty girl, so no complaints on my behalf. If you have a dream, even if it's one as silly as going to an American diner, don't let it be forgotten; just because it's a non-ambitious one, doesn't mean it's not important.

// Cuando era niño, nunca tuve la oportunidad de viajar mucho; no había tanto dinero y, no sé, supongo que mis papás no eran aficionados de viajar lejos, siempre era la costa Este (para ver a la familia de mi papá) o hacia el Oeste (para ver a la de mi mamá). Yo fui uno de esos niños que vieron un millón de películas y series estadounidenses, eso hizo que me enamorara de una cultura que no era verdaderamente mía pero, hey, ¿quién dice que no puedes atesorar algo que se siente tuyo, aún cuando nadie más lo entiende?

Una de las cosas que resonaron en mi mente por mucho tiempo fue la idea de los diners. Esas cafeterías en medio de la carretera, con una mujer robusta tomando órdenes, gente comiendo hot cakes, tomando café ilimitado, preguntando por los especiales del día y decorado en una moda retro de 1950. Les juro, ir a uno de esos era un sueño grande que tenía de niño. Irónicamente, vi uno hace algunos años cuando fui a Los Angeles y ni siquiera entré, jaja.

Pues, durante mis vacaciones de invierno, fui a Mel's con mi familia. Mel's ha existido desde 1947 y amé todo al respecto. Por supuesto, mi experiencia de diner no fue tan similar a lo que vi en la televisión pero aún así comí una hamburguesa deliciosa, jugué un poco con una rocola y mi mesera robusta terminó siendo una niña muy muy bonita, así que no hay quejas por aquí. Si tienen un sueño, aún si es algo tan tonto como ir a un diner estadounidense, no lo dejen ser olvidado; sólo porque no es un sueño muy ambicioso no significa que sea irrelevante.

Boys Cry Too...

During the past few days, I watched an anime called Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, because a friend of mine said that it's something quite special and, trust me, it is. It tells the story of a group of friends who fell apart after one of them died when they were kids; the loneliest one begins to see the ghost of said friend and that unravels a series of events that brings the group back together to grant their long-gone friend's last wish. 

I cried a lot while watching this series, specially during the final episodes, but that got me thinking of something: when was the last time you saw a boy/man cry? I, for once, cry a lot, I'm a very emotional person and, for some reason I don't understand, crying is always associated with weakness and that's not true. For a man to be able to cry he has to be connected with his emotions and emotions are the source of our strength. 

So, next time you (as a man) feel like crying, do it; and, if you see a boy crying, respect that. Crying doesn't make you weak, it doesn't make you any less of a man or defines what you like or dislike. Everyone cries and sometimes it's a healthy way of releasing stuff that are buried deep within your soul. Let's face it: boys cry too and that's okay.

// En estos días, vi un anime que se llama Anohana: La Flor Que Vimos Ese Día, porque un amigo me lo recomendó y dijo que era especial, créanme, lo es. Cuenta la historia de un grupo de amigos que se desintegra tras la muerte de uno de ellos cuando eran niños; el más solo comienza a ver al fantasma de la amiga y eso desata una serie de eventos que reúne al grupo con la misión de cumplir el último deseo de la amiga que ya no está con ellos.

Lloré mucho viento esta serie, especialmente durante los episodios finales, pero eso me puso a pensar en algo: ¿cuándo fue la última vez que vieron a un niño/hombre llorar? Yo, por ejemplo, lloro mucho, soy una persona muy emocional y, por alguna razón que no entiendo, llorar siempre se asocia con debilidad y eso no es verdad. Para que un hombre pueda llorar tiene que estar conectado con sus emociones y las emociones son la fuente de nuestra fuerza.

Así que la siguiente vez que tú (como hombre) tengas ganas de llorar, hazlo; y si ven a un niño llorando, respeten eso. Llorar no te hace débil, no te hace menos hombre o define lo que te gusta o disgusta. Todos lloran y a veces es una forma saludable de sacar cosas que están enterradas en lo profundo de nuestras almas. Enfrentémoslo: los hombres lloran también y no tiene nada de malo.

Haunted House

How many stories can are created every day? Our mind is capable of crafting the craziest scenarios with just a pinch of inspiration, it's a matter of stimulating our imagination with images, sounds, references. We live a real life in a real world, but that doesn't mean we're unable to create different realities, new worlds, brand new places with their own stories to tell.

The other day, I was walking around with my step-nephew (my stepdad's grandson, haha, it's hard to define, isn't it?) and we saw this house that looked abandoned, the lawn looking like it hasn't been trimmed in ages, dents on the garage door and the main entrance... It had a really eerie quality about it and I loved it, that's why I chose this haunted house as the backdrop for my outfit photos.

Why do you think I called it a haunted house? Well, I made up a story about it to make it creepier; maybe there is a family living there or they went away on vacation, maybe it is abandoned and it's a spooky place... We'll never know... The thing is, at least for me, it's a creepy house in the suburbs that could easily pass for a haunted place and that triggered my imagination to create a story. How many stories have you created lately?

// ¿Cuántas historias se crean todos los días? Nuestra mente es capaz de trazar los escenarios más increíbles con sólo una pizza de inspiración, es cuestión de estimular nuestra imaginación con imágenes, sonidos, referencias. Vivimos una vida real en el mundo real, pero eso no significa que somos incapaces de crear diferentes realidades, nuevos mundos, lugares nuevos con sus propias historias para contar.

El otro día, caminaba con mi sobrinastro (el nieto de mi padrastro, jaja, es difícil de definir ¿no?) y vimos esta casa que parecía abandonada, el pasto sin cortar desde hace mucho, golpes en la puerta del garage y la entrada principal... Tenía una vibra bastante rara y me encantó, por eso elegí esta casa embrujada como el escenario para mis fotos de atuendo.

¿Por qué creen que la llamé casa embrujada? Pues, inventé una historia para hacerla más espeluznante; quizá sí hay una familia viviendo ahí o quizá se fueron de vacaciones, quizá sí está abandonada y es un lugar de miedo... Nunca lo sabremos... El punto es, al menos para mí, es que es una casa rara en medio de los suburbios que fácilmente podría pasar por un lugar embrujado y eso detonó mi imaginación para crear una historia. ¿Cuántas historias han creado ustedes últimamente?

Good Vibes Only

Some days are tougher than others; suddenly the air becomes heavy and every muscle aches while walking, sad emotions feel ten times more intense and time moves painfully slower. Those days come and go and, if you're lucky, they disappear for a long time before coming back. However, some people aren't that fortunate and the darkness overcomes the light inside their hearts.

When that happens, it's important to imagine a safe place, a haven where the terrible things out there are unable to shape the way people live. Imagination becomes a powerful tool to escape reality, then transform it into what feels right. Imagination becomes a beacon of hope and a trusted friend. During dark times, good vibes only.

// Algunos días son más difíciles que otros; de repente el aire se vuelve pesado y cada músculo duele al caminar, emociones tristes se sientes diez veces más intensas el tiempo se mueve a una velocidad que lastima. Esos días viene y van y, si tienes suerte, desaparecen por un largo tiempo antes de regresar. Sin embargo, algunas personas no son tan afortunadas y la obscuridad vence a la luz dentro de sus corazones.

Cuando eso sucede, es importante imaginar un lugar seguro, un santuario donde las cosas terribles que pasan allá afuera no tienen el poder de moldear la vida de las personas. La imaginación se convierte en una herramienta poderosa para escapar de la realidad y, posteriormente, transformarla en lo que se siente correcto. La imaginación se convierte en un estandarte de esperanza y un amigo de confianza. Durante las malas épocas, sólo buenas vibras.

Imagination is a double-edged sword; it's about creativity, thinking beyond what's expected and day dreaming. If employed correctly, it can become a huge problem solver, it can lead you through the darkest of times and keep you safe; however, imagination can also be troublesome, a place where dreams become nightmares and open doors close in our face.

Have you ever been in a situation where you feel there's no exit? That going away feels like an impossible task? Most of times, that's our mind playing tricks on us, our imagination being carried away and making us feel like we have no choice but to remain where we are. That, my friends, is not true. We always have a choice and, while there might not be a good one among them, it's our job to be honest with ourselves and face reality.

Throughout my life I've seen people suffer, getting stressed, fighting with one another; I've seen weaklings who are too afraid to leave the situation they're in... But I've also seen champions, people who understand the game of life and use their imagination to map different outcomes with every choice. I've seen brave people who, even with a sad face, timely admit: it's time to go, I can't stay. Let's be more like them and use our imagination to explore new paths, to find new ways. 

La imaginación es un arma de doble filo; es sobre creatividad, pensar más allá de lo esperado y soñar despierto. Si se emplea correctamente, puede volverse una herramienta para solucionar problemas, te puede ayudar en los momentos más sombríos y mantenerte a salvo; sin embargo, la imaginación también puede ser problemática, un lugar donde los sueños se convierten en pesadillas y las puertas se cierran en nuestra cara.

¿Alguna vez han estado en una situación donde sienten que no hay salida? ¿Que irse a otro lado parece una tarea imposible? La mayoría de las veces, eso sucede porque la mente juega con nosotros, nuestra imaginación se sale de control y nos hace sentir que no hay otra opción mas que quedarnos donde estamos. Eso, mis amigos, no es cierto. Siempre tenemos una opción y, tal vez no haya una buena entre las opciones, es nuestra labor ser honestos con nosotros y afrontar la realidad.

Durante mi vida he visto a gente sufrir, preocuparse, pelear con los demás; he visto personas débiles que están aterradas de dejar la situación en la que están... Pero también he visto campeones, gente que entiende cómo funciona el juego de la vida y usan su imaginación para hacer mapas de diferentes resultados para cada elección. He visto gente valiente que, aún con una cara triste, admiten puntualmente: es tiempo de partir, no me puedo quedar. Seamos más como ellos y usemos nuestra imaginación para explorar nuevos caminos, nuevas rutas.

January: It's all about Imagination

Daydreaming is one of my favourite things to do...

Sometimes I daydream about the the past and make other decisions; I like the idea of creating different scenarios and think about how my life would change if I didn't make the choices I made. It's a matter of imagination and, for some reason, it's something that you kind of give up on as you grow older (even with all the Pinterest quotes revolving around imagination, inspiration and keeping your inner child alive).

It's funny to think that I'm getting older when, most of the time, I don't feel old; like, when people ask for my age, that question gets me all itchy because I don't like feeling like I'm ageing, I even get that question wrong sometimes, haha. I hate the fact that one day I'll be over thirty and I won't be able to do a bunch of things that teenagers do without being judged or frowned upon.

That's why for 2017, one of my main goals is to actively use my imagination and daydream even more. January is my kickstart and I'll focus all the posts in here to that goal. I realise, of course, that time doesn't stop for anyone but, if I can make it go a bit slower (even if it's all in my head), I will. I'll be Peter Pan and there's no stopping me on that decision. Soñar despierto es una de mis cosas favoritas en la vida... 

A veces sueño despierto sobre el pasado y hago otras decisiones; me gusta la idea de crear diferentes escenarios y pensar cómo mi vida cambiaría si no hubiera tomado las decisiones que tomé. Es cuestión de imaginación y, por alguna razón, es algo que semi vas dejando conforme creces (aún con todas esas frases de Pinterest que hablan de imaginación, inspiración y mantener vivo a tu niño interior).

Es chistoso pensar que estoy envejeciendo cuando, la mayor parte del tiempo, no me siento viejo; cuando la gente me pregunta mi edad, esa pregunta me irrita porque no siento que estoy envejeciendo, hasta a veces me equivoco al momento de responder eso. Odio el hecho de que algún día tendré más de treinta años y no podré hacer muchas cosas que hace la gente joven sin que los juzguen o los vean feo.

Es por eso que en 2017, una de mis metas principales es utilizar mucho la imaginación y soñar despierto como si fuera niño. Enero es el mes de arranque y enfocaré todos los posts aquí hacia esa meta. Sé, por supuesto, que el tiempo no se detiene por nadie pero, si puedo hacer que vaya un poquito más lento (aunque sea sólo en mi cabeza), lo haré. Seré Peter Pan y nadie me puede detener en esa decisión.
