I'm an airhead. Oh wow!: Book Club #3: Forbidden

Hey guys! In case you're not aware of this, I recently launched a book club here on the blog. I know it's not really related to fashion but I also think that is quite important for everyone (inside and outside the fashion industry) to read more. This book marks the third entry on the club, it's a deeply disturbed yet relatable story from an author I recently discovered but one that quickly gained my heart. Book Club #3 is Forbidden, by Tabitha Suzuma.

Este libro marca la tercera entrada en el club, es una historia perturbadora pero identificable de una autora que descubrí hace poco pero que rápidamente ha ganado mi corazón. Are we star-crossed lovers? Are these feelings really wrong? Maya and Lochan are brother and sister but they've always shared a bond stronger than blood. Set in a dysfunctional home, Forbidden tells the story of a family that has a million problems and no apparent solution. The two oldest siblings are forced to take care of their brothers and sisters when their mother checks out and shows herself as an insecure woman that's willing to sacrifice everything on her life just to feel loved by men.

Every chapter is narrated from the perspective of either Lochan or Maya; the first is the social outcast with a heart of gold; while Maya is more of a social butterfly, always hanging with the right crowd but feeling weird and distancing herself from them. For me, it was easy to identify with Lochan, he's cold, distant and shy but, once the ice is thawed, a sensitive and funny kid. Both of them find comfort with being who they are when they're together. Both of them share the burden of becoming the support system of their family. Both of them are in love, with each other.

It's easy to judge a novel like Forbidden when you find that it touches the idea of incest but, I can tell you, once you get to know the characters, everything makes sense. And that's a bit scary. I love it when books make me feel something; and this one stayed with me. It's a lesson on love, on trust, on not being judgmental and, instead, learn how to deal with the world when they think you're wrong but, deep down, you know what you're doing is right. Tabitha Suzuma has the ability to suck you in on stories and make you wish they never end so, for me, Forbidden was amazing and it really hurt to finish it.

¿Nuestro amor es desventurado? ¿Están mal estos sentimientos? Maya y Lochan son hermanos pero siempre han compartido un vínculo más fuerte que el sanguíneo. Situado en un hogar disfuncional, Forbidden cuenta la historia de una familia que tiene millones de problemas y ninguna solución aparente. Los dos hermanos más grandes son forzados a hacerse cargo de sus hermanos y hermanas cuando su madre pierde el juicio y se muestra como una mujer insegura dispuesta a sacrificar todo en su vida sólo para sentirse amada por los hombres.

Cada capítulo es narrado desde la perspectiva de Lochan o Maya; el primero es el inadaptado social con un corazón de oro; mientras Maya es más sociable, siempre involucrada con las personas correctas pero sintiéndose extraña y distanciándose a sí misma de ellos. Para mí, fue fácil conectar con Lochan, es frío, distante y tímido pero, una vez que el hielo se derrite, es un niño sensible y gracioso. Ambos se hallan cómodos siendo quienes son cuando están juntos. Ambos comparten la carga de ser los pilares de su familia. Ambos están enamorados, entre ellos.

Es fácil juzgar una novela como Forbidden cuando descubres que trata el tema de incesto pero, les digo en serio, una vez que conoces a los personajes, todo cobra sentido. Y eso da un poco de miedo. Amo cuando los libros me hacen sentir algo; y éste se quedó conmigo. Es una lección de amor, de confianza, de aprender a no juzgar y, mejor, saber lidiar con el mundo cuando todos piensan que estás mal pero, en el fondo, sabe que lo que haces está bien. Tabitha Suzuma tiene la habilidad de absorberte en sus relatos y hacer desear que nunca terminen así que, para mí, Forbidden fue increíble y me dolió mucho terminar de leer.
