The importance of social media

I was with one of my good friends the other day and we were catching up, you know, like normal people do. Eventually, we got to talk about work and how she went to a job interview and there she was asked about social media, if she thought it was important and stuff like that. They checked her Instagram and Twitter and stuff and told her that she needed to work on them a bit more if she wanted the position she was applying for. It wasn't related to that area in particular but it was a creative job.

Did you ever think that life would come to that? Social media is extremely relevant now and can be a critical factor in decision making and the opportunities you get in life. I don't think it's a bad thing that people are checking candidate's Instagram (and others) to determine if they should hire a person or not because we do spend a lot of time in there, interacting with others, sharing moments. For me, it's part of my every day life and maybe it's time for others to start considering the importance and impact that their social media accounts can have and how to make that repercute positively in everything they do.

Eventualmente, comenzamos a platicar sobre trabajo y cómo ella tuvo una entrevista y le preguntaron sobre redes sociales, si piensa que son importantes y cosas así. Junto con ella revisaron su Instagram, Twitter y cosas y le dijeron que tenía que trabajar un poquito más duro en ellas si quería la posición por la que estaba aplicando. No era exactamente relacionado con esa área en particular pero sí era un trabajo creativo.

¿Alguna vez pensaron que la vida llegaría a esto? Las redes sociales son extremadamente relevantes ahora y pueden ser un factor crítico en la toma de decisiones y oportunidades que tenemos en la vida. No creo que sea algo malo que las personas estén checando el Instagram (u otras redes) de un candidato para determinar si deberían o no contratarlo porque realmente pasamos mucho tiempo ahí, intercalando con otros, compartiendo momentos. Para mí, es una parte esencial de vida diaria y quizá es hora de que otros comiencen a considerar la importancia y el impacto que sus redes sociales puedan tener y cómo hacer que eso repercuta de manera positiva en todo lo que hacen.
