Self Care: A practical non-clichéd guide

self care guide
Have you ever seen those posts on social media that say things like "to take better care of yourself, do the following: journal every day, meditate, take a deep breath..." and stuff like that? I'm sure you have... I don't think they're true, haha. I've yet to meet a person that's all zen like that and the few Internet girls I've seen talking about that seem fake AF, a very boring cliché. That said, I think self care is SUPER SUPER IMPORTANT OK? And just because I feel those things are clichéd and fake, doesn't mean that they're not true, they just don't work for me.

Let me tell you what it does (in a list because, well, organisation is important):

1. Read a good novel. Just because there are a million motivational books doesn't mean they're any great pieces of literature.

2. Binge-watch a good show. Animes and movies work fine as well. Just focus on their story for a while and, when you're done, think about the good things that you might add into your daily life. Hearing stories is good when you feel like yours is stuck.

3. Focus on yourself. Stop trying to save every single person out there because, spoiler alert, the only person you can save (most times) is yourself.

4. Pampering. Get that skincare routine in check, try on new outfits, do something different with your hair. Do it for yourself and not for others.

5. Internalise. Give yourself a good self-therapy session (yes, journal if you need to...). Think about the things you want to accomplish, make lists, set goals, download that cheesy organising app that you were curious about.

BONUS! Learn something new, anything, just learn something: a language, a recipe, try a new tea, figure out how to make yourself a drink, try a home workout routine. Seriously, just keep your mind busy.

Really hoping some of these tips help you out in times of need.
Remember: be your top priority, always.

Love,
Henry.

Love,
Henry.

April: Apocalypse Now

april apocalypse now
If you'd ask me how things were a month ago...

Well, my answer would be a completely different thing than it is now. Welcome to our own little apocalypse, best friends. It took a global pandemic virus to get us confined in the "safety" of our homes (some of us, at least). Back in March, all the talk about Coronavirus wasn't really a concern of mine, I was busier trying to understand how I can live in a country so violent, so misogynistic and old-fashioned as Mexico, and trying to figure out the best way of helping out others.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still very concerned about that situation but it seems like we're stuck in a weird place where most of the concern circles around public health, politics, a certain sense of collective fear of what may come and, of course, a general apathy towards the state of society as of late. I talk about this era, this new normal, as a version of the apocalypse because it's destroying many things that we've established (good and bad). These past few weeks, being aware and practicing social distance, trying to stay home as much as possible and, frankly, struggling to get much done have been difficult at times but, overall, strange for me. I wish I could do so much more to help, change the way things are, to keep the focus on so many other topics that I feel are relevant to us a society... Still, my mind keeps going back and forth without much of an answer.

Having a lifestyle blog doesn't seem as relevant to me as it felt, say, two months ago but; I have to keep focusing on doing what I do best: finding the balance between the things I want to talk about and the things that somehow work in the internet. The apocalypse is described (Bible references aside) as an event involving destruction or damage on a catastrophic scale: that's the moment we're living now and it's unknown if we'll ever go back to the things we once considered normal (I honestly don't think we are, but hey, let's keep the optimism going). So, throughout this month, I'll try to find things that are worth talking about mixed with our usual doses of fashion, music, anecdotes and wisdom. Let's get weird together.

Bienvenidos a nuestro pequeño apocalipsis mejores amigos.

One of the greater things about living in this era is that we get a lot more freedom than our ancestors had; of course, we still face so many limitations because of our race, gender, nationality and so on but, hey, it's better than in the 1800s. Freedom, unfortunately, is a double-edged sword because (and here's where I tie in the empathy factor that I chose for March's theme) you can choose to support one cause but no the other. Everything comes down to your choices.

This month, I've been choosing to support the feminist movement a lot more, giving a little to a cause that it's important to me. Some will choose to support a different cause, or to not empathise at all, that's a personal stance and something that only through putting yourself in the other person's shoes will lead to knowledge and understanding. I'm not asking you to be something or to support the same things I do, all I want is for you to train your empathy, to care about others and not just yourself. A little bit goes a long way.

Moving onto today's outfit, I wanted to juxtapose two items that are not regularly seen together: a floral shirt and a turtleneck (mainly because I just got this shirt but it's a thin fabric and it was freaking cooooold outside). I'm fairly new to wearing turtleneck items, they have to be non-constrictive or else I'll feel like I'm being choked... But really, a black comfy turtleneck is a great piece to have in your wardrobe and it looks surprisingly cool with a short sleeve shirt. Here, the floral pattern just adds a pop of texture and charm, I like that it looks more Japanese garden than beach print uncle-wear, haha.
