The Tokyo Journals

Travelling to Japan was one of the greatest decisions I've made in my entire life; going back again tops that. I saw myself immersed in a city that rarely sleeps, that's always efficient and well organised, a city that made me feel like a foreigner, like a stranger but, at the same time, made me feel at home.

I came with high expectations about this trip but the final results exceeded what I had in mind: from walking in the rain, to seeking refugee inside a store that became my haven; from going to Fashion Week to hanging out with new friends I made along the way; from seeing the cherry blossoms bloom, going to a cemetery, watch incredible architecture to eating my weight in Harajuku crepes... Tokyo proved to be one of my happiest eras, one where I learned a lot and one that's nowhere near its ending.

YouTube Monthly Recap: May

Hey best friends! May has come to an end and it's about time to recap all the videos uploaded to my YouTube channel during the past few weeks. I'm trying this new approach where I want to give more tips and advice, to help my viewers a bit more, so we'll have to see how that goes!

During May, everything was about my farewell (and eventual departure) from Japan; it's about consequences and final moments of that trip; plus, I recorded a video with my sister celebrating, well, brotherhood, haha, and I ended the month with tips on how to dress better without spending tons of money.

// ¡Hola amiguines!

I sincerely hope you're enjoying the stuff on my YouTube channel and, if you do, please subscribe
See you next month with another recap!

Book Club #23: The Book Of Proper Names

Hello there, best buddies! I promised a double dose of the book club for this month and I'm keeping my word! For me, it's always about finding a cool novel to share with you and, also, I love boos, so, it's amazing to have a chance of writing reviews about the things that I read. This is yet another novel from one of my favourite authors (if not the favourite one) and with this one, I can reaffirm my love for her. Book Club #23 is The Book Of Proper Names, by Amélie Nothomb.

// ¡Hola mejores amigos!
Book Club 23 The Book of Proper Names by Amelie NothombDestiny begins with something as simple as your name... How many legends are out there in the world? Incredible characters usually have incredible names. It's not the golden rule but, from the minute you're named, there's a legacy for you to follow. Plectrude, the main character in The Book Of Proper Names, was born under unusual circumstances: her mom killed her dad, went to prison and gave birth to her just before committing suicide herself, her only wish was for her daughter to be called Plectrude. Her sister takes care of the baby and treats her like her own.

With a name like that, you can either be terribly ugly and weird or a powerful character. Nothomb goes for the latter, Plectrude lives a fairytale-like life during her childhood and grows up to be a quirky, enchanting, beautiful girl. During the first half of the novel, we're introduced to Plectrude's unique way of doing things, her struggles with school, power and, also, her peculiar love for unreal love stories and ballet, which leads her to enrolling at a ballet academy.

The second half of the novel, in true Amélie Nothomb's fashion, deals with Plectrude's life at the Academy, the developing of her eating disorders and her complete disconnection to emotions. That's when it gets really interesting; I've always said that Nothomb's best works are the autobiographical ones and, although The Book Of Proper Names is fictional, it has the same scent of her more realistic writing. The ending is a bit of a let-down but it's still incredible what this woman can do in novels that are less than 200 pages long. Definitely one of my favourite titles from her.

If you think you can handle this novel, head over to Book Depository and get The Book Of Proper Names or any other titles from Amélie Nothomb (with free worldwide shipping!).

Love always,
Henry.

Club fine gauge check bandana, from Averett / Chevak packable jacket, from Penfield / Kelp tee, from Mollusk / Weird guy selvedge pants, from Naked & Famous.
What's It Gonna Be collaboration with Gola Classics 2 Identifying yourself with something, choosing a side, those are big decisions and it's something that my generation (and I think newer generations will do as well) has been doing and treasuring for the last couple of years. It's no longer about generic pieces, customisation has become a key in the process of buying things and; by customising, I'm not referring solely to things you create, I also mean those pieces and brands that you feel identified with. It's really important to have similar DNA to the brand before acquiring any of its goods, you know?

Gola Classics made me part of their newest campaign: #WhichGolaAreYou? And, trust me, choosing one model sounds easier than it actually is. I don't think I have a super characteristic style; I'm not a goth, or a punk or a preppy dude, (although, sometimes I can be one of those, haha, but just for a short amount of time)... So, answering the question of which Gola I identify most with was tough. In the end, I selected two different pairs, because that's more like me.

White sneakers spoke to me because they're simple and can go great with many outfits. They're versatile and I like to think that I'm that way as well. I never define myself as just one thing, I have many different layers and I can adapt to situations quite easily. That's my kind of thing; you think you know what to expect when you meet me but I'll still have a few tricks up my sleeve. So, which Gola are you? What's it gonna be?

Hidden Corners: Monsieur Croque

Hidden Corners Monsieur Croque Condesa Review
Hidden Corners Monsieur Croque Condesa Review 5 Hidden Corners Monsieur Croque Condesa Review 3 I'm a huge fan of French food but I prefer the home-made style, you know, something that feels warm and cozy, like a hug. I discovered Monsieur Croque through Instagram and it's because places like this one exist that I decided to open my food review section: it's a hidden corner, a hidden gem. The place itself is quite cozy, with a couple tables outside and some more inside, stools in front of the open kitchen and a baking aroma filling the air.

They have over ten different kinds of croque monsieur, tartines, salads and desserts. It was very difficult to choose just one dish but I went classic and ordered a sandwich with homemade bread, Gorgonzola cheese, smoked ham, tomato, olives and bechamel sauce; for the side dish I went against my craving of French fries and chose ratatouille instead (best.decision.ever). Everything about the sandwich was amazing, it's like they know exactly how much of each ingredient to add but it still feels like your grandma made it and she was generous with the amount of food. The ratatouille is the best one I've ever had in my life, I'm not kidding. It was just incredible.

For dessert, I chose a freshly baked cupcake with berries and mascarpone cheese (which I think it's a great combo) but, even when it was perfectly baked and super soft, it didn't match the previous dishes. I think next time, I'll order something different, like a giant cookie or some pie. It was still good, tho, just not quite up to par with the rest of the menu. I drank Darjeeling tea through my whole meal and that made me really happy.

Overall, Monsieur Croque is one hell of an option if you're looking for homemade, cozy, French food. The owners are incredibly nice and so are the chefs. It's fairly priced (around 10-15 dollars or 150-250 pesos) and they have live music on Saturdays. Also, they're about to open a bakery right next to the restaurant (that excites me very much). I'll definitely be back many, many times.

Something truly awful has happened to me since ever since I came back from Japan (and the same thing happened to after Korea): I can't seem to stop thinking about living somewhere else, having a different life. Everything here at home seems bleaker, sadder, it's terrible. I don't mean to sound snobbish or anything but, being able to live somewhere else really changes you, it gives you a new set of eyes and helps you understand the thing you want (and don't want) for you in the future.

That has been my main struggle during this month; some parts of my life here I really love, you know, people, places and my job as a blogger but; on the other hand, there's so much about Mexico that stresses me out: deficient public transportation, crime, everything is so expensive compared to what you earn, traffic... And the list goes on and on. For some reason, I was never raised to love this country and I'm about crazy jealous of the people able to do that.

I wish things were different but I can't control how I feel. I know there's a better world for me out there, a place that makes me happier than being in here. It's like some shadow is clogging all that's beautiful and nice, like I'm trapped on the dark side of the sun and I'm unable to feel comfortable. There's malease all around me and I just want it to stop. And I'm sorry if this post is depressing, I'll make sure the next one has more rainbows and unicorns in it, haha.

WHEIR: Democratizing Denim

Wheir Democratizing Denim
Wheir Democratizing Denim 4 Wheir Democratizing Denim 3 Every now and then I come across a brand that really catches my eye. Sometimes it's because they have amazing designs, other times because they carry a great purpose, a good story. During my time in Tokyo I didn't really plan anything beyond Fashion Week when it came to fashion events, but, I was lucky enough to score an invitation to a party hosted by WHEIR, a Japanese denim brand that works under the idea of creating great pieces but lowering the prices so everyone can enjoy their denim: they're democratising denim.

I chatted with the brand's owner for a bit (he spoke English, thank goodness!) and he was the one telling me about WHEIR's journey, they started more on the high-end note but with this collection they're trying to approach a younger customer, someone who wants good pieces without spending the world in them. I love that idea. Most of my favourite brands around the globe do that and WHEIR has earned a special place in my heart because of it.

Me encanta esa idea. See You Later (in collaboration with H&M)

See You Later in collaboration with HM
See You Later in collaboration with HM 2 I'm wearing:

1. Printed blazer in black and blue, from H&M.
2. Long t-shirt in gray, from H&M.
3. Extreme super skinny jeans in indigo, from Asos.
4. Logan white leather sneakers, from Frank Wright.
5. Necklace, from Swarovski.
6. Rings, from H&M.

See You Later in collaboration with HM 4 I can't believe this is the final outfit post from Tokyo! It's funny, I felt like it took forever for me to shoot this particular outfit but, at the same time, I feel like I shot it yesterday. My time in Tokyo was one of the best things that ever happened to me, I was able to live it like a local and that made me appreciate the city even more. Of course, I had some tough times too, language barriers, schedule issues, money problems, you know, haha, but it was all worth it.

Traveling is supposed to change you, for the better, you're exposed to a whole new set of rules, different cultures, novelties. All of the fights, the struggles are meant to make you resourceful and that's why this trip meant so much for me. I learned a lot about another country, that's for sure, but I also learned a lot about myself, about patience and fighting for your dreams. That's why I decided to come back at least once a year.

It sounds crazy, right? I have to work my ass off and save lots of money, but I'll do it because I know that every time that I set foot on this city, I will become wiser, stronger, better. I made some good decisions and some terrible ones during this trip but I'm sure that next time, the latter will decrease (and I do say next time, because there will be a next time). I'm not saying goodbye to Tokyo, it's more of a see you later, my good friend.

Finally, special thanks to the H&M team in Mexico and in Japan
for making sure I looked stylish all the time.
