Chats and carousels

When I started this blog, I remember that the very first outfit post I did revolved around a small carnival-isn fair that I came across. Ever since then, I've been wanting to do a photo-shoot with a carousel in the background. You have no idea how badly I looked for one and how difficult it was to get permission to shoot at one.

But here we are, four years later, in a freakin' carousel. It was magical. I fulfilled one of my fashion dreams and, with a little help of my friends Luis Galicia, Aaron Walls and Alex from MexAlex, I was able to snap (and now publish) the photos I only dreamt of doing in the past.

This was a special day because not only was I able to hang around with friends but also Alex did some photos with me. I've always said that meeting people and have them become friends is my favourite part of being a blogger; so this photo-day summed everything I love about blogging and gave me fuel to keep going for more. Here's to us, to new dreams and adventures.

Photographed by Aaron Walls.

YouTube Monthly Recap: February

Hey best friends! Just like every other month since I started posting videos on my YouTube channel, here's a recap of everything that went live during February. This was month where I produced a lot of content and I took some risks that, fortunately paid off.

During February, I did my first interview with the beautiful Sandra Echeverría, did a really funny collab detailing how to be a stereotypical posh person in Mexico, took you on a blogger diary to Folsom, did a Costco haul and shared some favourites with you. If you like what you're seeing, be a friend and subscribe to my channel, I promise great things for the upcoming months. Hope to see you there and we'll meet again when the time comes for March's recap!

// ¡Hola mejores amigos!

Love always,
Henry.

Book Club #21: Norwegian Wood

Hey guys, how's it going? As you know, I'm doing an online book club, right here on the blog, where I post reviews about most of the books I read. I try to keep finding cool titles to showcase here and, between classics and new stories, I think we've been doing a good job. I read a lot and it's important for me that you guys know that. Who knows? Maybe it will inspire you to read a bit more... I was a bit skeptical about this author, because I thought it was one of those cliché overrated ones... Boy was I wrong. This is a coming-of-age story about finding out who you are when the people you have close fail to fulfil the voids your life has created. Book Club #21 is Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami.

// ¡Hola amigos!
Book Club 21 Norgewian Wood"If you only read all the books that everyone else is reading... You can only think what everyone else is thinking." I didn't want to read a Murakami book, I'll admit that. I was judging something I didn't know because of other people. But I gave it a go and this ended up being one of my favourite books from all time. Norwegian Wood tells the story of Toru Watanabe, a freshman in college and how he deals with life after his best friend killed himself. This novel is filled with angst and anxiety, those things are powerful, they  control and change people.

While I was reading this, something funny happened. I started to relate a lot with Toru and I felt what he was feeling at times, I think your favourite books do that to you, they resonate in a way that no other thing has and they stay with you even after reading the final page. Toru is a very peculiar young man, he's not a leader but he's not a follower. He marches to the beat of his own drum and his seemingly normal personality makes him interesting, because it's when he shows the cracks on his soul that he unravels as quite the unique guy.

How are you supposed to deal with death? That's one of the most developed subjects in this novel. Are you ever able to move on? I think that you always carry ghosts with you, and that shapes the person you become. One really important lesson Norwegian Wood taught me is that you need to be open to the people around you, you can't mourn something forever, you deserve to know what's out there and, if you want, share moments with others, understand their flaws and virtues and go with the flow a bit more.

bloggers retouching enhancing 3 So, there was this one time where this blogger told me something: "Hen, I caught you, you Photoshop your photos!!" and I was like: "Well, yeah, don't you? Don't we all?" And here's when I tell you that I edit my photos a lot and there's no shame in that. I'm a blogger, not a professional photographer by any means, and most of the content here is entirely made by me, snapping photos with my semi-professional Nikon D5100 camera, a tripod and a remote.

The process is quite easy to understand: I choose the outfit I'm wearing for the day, select a good location, set up the tripod, program the camera to remote control mode, test the light and start shooting. After taking like 80-120 photos, I transfer them to my computer, get rid of the bad ones and, from the 30-40 remaining photos, select the 7 that will become an outfit post. After that, I edit everything on Photoshop, this includes fixing the light, desaturating the colours, fixing my face (getting rid of any marks, pimples, unshaved spots) and hair, cropping and creating the title for the post on the main photo.

Among the things I edit and enhance, well, I do a lot of tweaks here and there: I get rid of pimples, add light to my eyes, enhance shadows on my face to show more bone structure, liquify to correct unflattering angles and curves and improve anything else that looks wrong, like stains on garments. I don't think I've ever addressed this before, but people deserve to know that most of us bloggers do some work on our photos; unskilled ones my depend a lot on filters and a million apps but, some of us are able to improve our looks thanks to Photoshop and that's quite amazing. It's like in magazines, how many times do you see unretouched photos? If they can do it, so can we.

H&M Studio SS16 Private View

H&M Studio SS16
H&M Studio SS16 2 Lookbook H&M Studio SS16 3 Lookbook
It's no secret that H&M is probably my favourite brand in the whole world and, although I sometimes like high-end goods, I'm more of a fast-fashion kind of guy. If you're familiar with the brand, you'll know that H&M releases several special collections per year, like Conscious Exclusive or the guest designer collection and; (also the focus on this post) Studio. I was invited to the private view of this collection at H&M's headquarters and it was amazing.

H&M Studio is probably one of the collections I like best because it always has an expensive flare and look with affordable prices. I'll focus on the menswear but, since it was also there, I will tell you that the womenswear collection is more on the resort kind of side; like a bohemian-relaxed trip filled warm colours and flowing fabrics.

Menswear this season is completely redefining sportswear and sports luxe; it's about giving new life to classic pieces: boxy t-shirts, rounder jackets, shorter trousers. I love that the colour palette is kind of mute with blue, brown, grey and beige pieces. This is more of an urban traveler, a guy that is very functional and sharp when it comes to style. Needless to say, I love it. It really fits my aesthetic and everything comes in my favourite colours. This collection will sell across the globe but only at flagship stores starting on February 25th.

life imitates art feat Corina Corina Espinosa 7 Every now and then I like to get a bit more complex and creative with my shoots. I'm fully aware that I'm not, nor ever I'll become, a model but I think fashion is a really cool and fun road and if there's a chance to transform a regular outfit photo into something a bit more special, then I'll take that chance every single time. And, also, it's not like I wouldn't wear this ensemble on a daily basis, so, everything's fine, fine, fine.

I teamed up with a fellow blogger and friend who you may remember from this collaboration post. Her name is Corina and she's pretty cool; I like that she blogs like no other Mexican girl, I mean, her posts are really cinematographic, she puts a lot of effort into her photos and it's fun to work with someone that is able to see things from a different perspective. That's always refreshing.

We had a pretty good idea of where we wanted to shoot, we decided to go to a baseball stadium at my University but security guards cut us short and told us we needed a special permit to do that. YAWN. After that, we went to an area filled with sculptures and thought it would be a cool spot; but just when we were going to snap photos of the two of us together, security guards rained on our parade again and we weren't able to snap a single shot. Even with that, I think the results are pretty amazing, it was a really nice and different concept to do!

Be sure to show Corina some love: FACEBOOK / TUMBLR / INSTAGRAM

The Chase 4 Life is an eternal chase, I've learned that throughout the past few years. If you want something, you shouldn't wait for it to come to you (it could happen, of course, but it's a rare thing), no, you have to hunt it, you have to search for it and it's not supposed to be an easy road. I'm talking about chasing your dreams and accomplishing stuff, not easy things like going for a sandwich or something, haha.

I teamed up with Paruno for a couple of posts (catch another one here) featuring their newest collection of shoes for a couple of reasons: first of all, they're a Mexican brand that's actually good and affordable (you don't get many of those); in second place, I really like their shoes and; lastly, they have an amazing manifesto that resonates with me. Paruno defends that every single choice you've made so far it's crucial, that you need to understand who you are and unleash your true self to make the right decisions. Those will shape and prepare you for what's to come. Choose and become.

I put a lot of thought into every outfit I choose. Clothes are a way of expressing yourself and giving a message to the world without having to say a word. And, believe it or not, that's what I was thinking while shooting these photos. Who you are and who you want to become... That's up to you, but it doesn't hurt to dress accordingly to that. I mean, we all need to do dress everyday, so, why not have some fun doing it? Why not choose the items that will help you become the person you want to be? In the end, aren't we all just chasing our dreams?

Strolling Down San Francisco

During my time in California, I had the chance to do a road trip to the incredible city of San Francisco. I was told that it wasn't like any other cities, that the vibe was different. People were right. San Francisco is amazing and weird in its own sense and I think I know why: many big companies, like Facebook or Twitter, have their headquarters there. That, of course, elevated the city and raised the prices of everything. San Francisco is expensive.

Many people have good jobs, but others can't seem to cope with the rise of prices and people arriving from all the country to work for the big names and leaving them without jobs. There are lots of crazy people in the streets. With that said, it also has an incredibly good side: it's multicultural like no other place I've seen. You get Little Italy, Little Japan, China Town, Valencia (the Latino neighbourhood), and regular American areas. That's amazing. The street art, the architecture... It's a really creative place. This is a photo journal through my lens, this is what caught my eye in this amazing city.

Tienes Little Italy, Little Japan, China Town, (el barrio latino), y areas estadounidenses normales. Eso es increíble. El arte en la calle, la arquitectura... Es un lugar muy creativo.
